Voices:
Turning words into action |

Memorial
Voices
has been helping the Shelton community turn words into action - and
one example was when Burma veteran Bert Dean saw the state of the
war memorial in Hanley Park. |

Bert contacted Terry Walsh, who in turn got onto the parks department.
The small memorial was hidden from view because of overgrown hedges.
Yet its setting in a glorious rose garden was the perfect place to
remember those who took part in the "Forgotten War" and those men
from Stoke on Trent who were taken prisoner.
The city council took action straight away and cleared the site, making
the memorial visible once more. Bert who holds the Burma Star then
arranged for a simple ceremony to take place and invited Lily and
Jim Stanway who work tirelessly to support the veterans and their
families through the Far East Prisoners of War Association.
The city council parks department were also represented by Ray Mosley
and Dave Hodgkinson.
