Created
around 150 years ago,
Biddulph Grange Garden is the product of an extraordinary imagination.
Designed in the mid 19th century as a series of connecting 'compartments',
one of Britain's most exciting and unusual gardens. Featuring the
imitation of the Great Wall of China, the Egyptian Court as well
as pinetum, rock-gardens and fernery.
James Bateman designed it as a rich and varied series of 'gardens
within a garden', to amaze and impress his friends and visitors.
A cleverly planned frame work of hedges, rocks, banks and planting
conceal these separate areas, each with its own distinct theme or
style.
Equally important, the garden was a home for Bateman's wide ranging
collection of plants, such as the fine collection of conifers in
the Pinetum, the newly introduced Himalayan Rhododendrons in the
Glen, and the varied and exotic planting in China.
