Madeline Perry reaches last 16 in British Open squash tournament

Madeline Perry has safely negotiated her passage into the last 16 of the British Open with a straight-sets win over qualifier Emma Beddoes.

The Northern Ireland woman, ranked 11th in the world, won 12-10 11-8 11-9 in 44 minutes at the tournament in Hull.

Perry will play third seed Raneem El Weleily of Egypt in the last 16 at the KC Arena on Thursday afternoon.

Top seed Nicol David from Malaysia advanced to the last eight after beating England's Sarah Kippax.

Kippax had earned her place after a five-set win over former world number two Natalie Grinham but David won 11-2 14-12 11-2 in just 35 minutes and will next play New Zealand's Joelle King.

Fourth seed Alison Waters also made it into the quarter finals thanks to a 11-2 11-4 8-11 7-11 11-4 success over Rachael Grinham.

Waters will face Australia's Kasey Brown who beat England's Sarah-Jane Perry 8-11 9-11 12-10 11-7.

England's Nick Matthew, the world number two, reached the quarter-finals of the men's event after beating Laurens Jan Anjema of the Netherlands 11-6 11-3 11-4.

Matthew is chasing his second consecutive British Open title and his fourth in total.
