South Korea secured their fifth fencing medal of London 2012 after overcoming Romania in the men's team sabre.

Romania had defeated Russia on their way to the final but their hopes of gold vanished with a 45-26 defeat at the ExCel Centre.

South Korea, who overcame Italy in their semi-final, were seeded only sixth of the eight sides but were inspired by Bongil Gu.

Italy secured bronze after beating Russia 45-40.

Prior to these Olympics the Koreans had only ever won three fencing medals.

But this was their second gold of London 2012 after Jiyeon Kim won the women's individual sabre Olympic gold after defeating Russia's Sofya Velikaya 15-9.

The third-ranked Gu and team-mates Junghwan Kim, Woo Young Won and Eun Seok Oh won all but one of the nine bouts in the final.

There were emotional scenes at the end as the Korean fencers waved their national flag in front of a capacity crowd.
