China women win Olympic fencing gold in team epee

China took women's team epee gold after outclassing South Korea with a 39-25 victory in the final.

South Korea pulled off a surprise in reaching the final and there was a silver medal for Shin A Lam, who was controversially denied a place in last week's epee final.

But China were too strong and took control in the fifth fight before earning a comfortable win.

The United States beat Russia 31-30 in the bronze medal match.

South Korea, who are ranked tenth in the world, overcame 2008 gold medallists Romania with a 45-38 quarter-final victory before beating the United States 45-36 in the semi-final.

China, who were silver medallists four years ago, beat Germany 45-42 in the last eight before a cagey 20-19 victory against Russia took them into the final.

The South Koreans held China to 9-9 after the first four fights but Anqi Xu and Yujie Sun helped the Chinese establish an 18-14 lead after six fights.

Sun, who won bronze in the individual event, came up with 12 touches in the final fight as China coasted to gold.
