Great Britain lose to Israel in World Championship qualifier

Israel edged past GB in Crystal Palace in the first qualifier

Great Britain's men suffered a major blow to their 2013 World Championship hopes with a second defeat by Israel in the space of five days.

Britain lost 29-20 in Rishion Le Zoin on Sunday, all but ending any chance of reaching the play-offs.

The defeat followed Wednesday's 29-26 loss to the Israelis in Crystal Palace.

Only the group winners will progress to the second phase of qualification, and GB play back-to-back games with group favourites Austria in January.

"We probably lost the game in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the second half when they scored four goals without reply," assistant coach Bill Baillie told Handball News.

"They took out Steven Larsson, and put a lot more pressure on us and the crowd got behind them.

"We stabilised, but there was no way back and quite early in the second half we lost both Martin Hare and Robin Garnham with ankle injuries. Losing two experienced defenders meant we were just too exposed."
