"It's great to get my first pre-season in so I can really stamp my authority on the squad, and really there's no excuses now," Mills told BBC Newcastle.
"I'm happy with the business we've done but I still want a couple more."
Experienced striker Rankine played under Mills at York, and has scored 59 goals in 316 league appearances spanning 10 years.
Guy, who is a graduate of the Newcastle academy, does not have a prolific record either, having netted 40 times in 320 games.
Of the six additions at the International Stadium, only midfielder JJ O'Donnell cost money.
The 22-year-old was signed for an undisclosed fee from Luton, returning to Tyneside after playing 17 matches while on loan at the Heed last term.
"Michael's a powerful striker that I believe's underachieved," Mills explained. "He and Lewis have great work ethics and I think they'll score more goals than they have because of how we play.
"And with JJ, I think it's great business because he can play in so many positions for us, but more importantly I love that he really wanted to come back."
