Southend United 1-0 Torquay United

Substitute Freddy Eastwood's first goal since October gave Southend a vital win against bottom club Torquay.

Southend dominated for large parts and should have gone in front but centre-back Jakub Sokolik missed an open goal from six yards out.

John White's header hit the crossbar before Eastwood's close-range finish secured the points.

Southend jump back into the League Two play-off places while Torquay remain four points adrift at the bottom.

Southend United manager Phil Brown told BBC Essex:

Post-match: Southend boss Brown

"I think it was a real big win. It was about trying to grind a result out against a team that are fighting for survival.

"We are nudging our way back into the play-offs. Players are on the front foot again. Albeit it wasn't a great performance by any stretch of the imagination.

"That's four clean sheets in a row so we must be doing something right.

"I've just given Freddy [Eastwood] the biggest hug he's had. He's stuck with us, he's been through the mill. What an impact sub he is."
