East Fife 0-1 Rangers
Rangers are two wins away from the League One title after a stoppage-time penalty from Lee McCulloch broke brave resistance from East Fife.
Pat Clarke tripped David Templeton to concede the spot-kick as the visitors stepped up the pressure late on.
The award came shortly after home keeper Greg Paterson had denied Templeton with a fine save.
In dour match of few chances, Nicky Law struck the woodwork for Rangers in the first half.
East Fife rarely threatened in attack but will feel hard done by after turning in a well-organised defensive display.
Following a largely turgid opening half-hour, Law smacked the ball off a post as a shot from Lee Wallace broke into his path.
Rangers were thwarted again moments later as Templeton danced past a series of defenders only for his shot to be comfortably taken by Paterson.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Rangers dominating possession but finding East Fife difficult to break down.
Templeton always looked Rangers' most likely source of a goal and a looping effort was cleared off the line by East Fife defender Joe Mbu.
McCulloch and Andrew Little were both foiled and Paterson was at full-stretch to push away Templeton's curling shot as the game headed towards a goalless conclusion, until substitute Clarke made his ill-timed challenge.
