Southend United 4-1 Millwall

Barry Corr

League Two Southend beat Championship strugglers Millwall to move into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Barry Corr put the dominant hosts ahead with a fine header before a floodlight failure led to a 20-minute delay.

Will Atkinson doubled the lead when he raced through and dinked the ball into the net after Millwall's Jermaine Easter saw red for an alleged stamp.

Michael Timlin and Ryan Leonard extended the lead as Martyn Woolford grabbed a consolation for the visitors.

Phil Brown's men came flying out of the blocks against their managerless opponents, who reached the semi-finals last season, and almost went ahead inside a frantic opening 10 minutes.

Corr's cushioned header found Anthony Straker, whose shot was saved by goalkeeper David Forde, before Timlin's follow up was cleared off the line by Jack Smith and Corr's header was blocked by Danny Shittu.

The home side were eventually rewarded for their pressure midway through the first half as John White's pinpoint cross found an unmarked Corr, who nodded the ball into the bottom-left corner.

But, with 26 minutes gone, the game was halted when two floodlights behind the North Stand went out, forcing the players off the field while engineers worked to fix the problem.

After the game restarted, the Lions' problems deepened as Easter was sent off on the stroke of half-time after he appeared to stamp on Ben Coker.

Southend made the man advantage count almost straight away when Timlin's excellent through ball released Atkinson, who found the net with a neat chip over the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Timlin sealed Southend's place in the fourth round of the competition for the first time since 2008 when he lashed in from just inside the box.

Woolford chested down Steve Morison's cross and volleyed in to pull one back for the visitors, before Corr almost added another for the Shrimpers when his glancing header struck the post.

But Ryan Leonard did make it four in stoppage time as he collected Corr's pass and fired into the top left corner.
