Kaizer Chief players will not join S Africa CHAN squad
Kaizer Chiefs have announced they will not release their players who have been selected in South Africa's 23-man squad for the 2014 CHAN tournament.
Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund named six Kaizer Chief players for the competition for domestic league players, which takes place from 11 January to 1 February in South Africa.
Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung said on the club's website: "We have expressed ourselves to the South Africa Football Association (Safa) well in advance.
"We play in a PSL league fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns on 23 January and we have to prepare for the Champions League as well."
Kaizer Chiefs added that they were under no obligation because the tournament is not sanctioned by football's world governing body Fifa.
It means Igesund will be without Itumeleng Khune (pictured), Tefo Mashamaite, Tsepo Masilela, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Bernard Parker.
He was already unable to select players from Orlando Pirates, Amazulu and Ajax Cape Town and said on Safa's website: " It would have been great to have more options but I am not complaining."
South Africa have been drawn against Nigeria, Mali and Mozambique.
"It is going to be a tough tournament because every team that comes here wants to win and no team is now a pushover in international football," Igesund added.
"But I can tell you now that we are going to have a very competitive team that will go out there and do their best."
