Barnsley 0-1 Bolton Wanderers

Bolton's Neil Danns

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson's first home game back in charge of the club ended in a league defeat by Bolton.

The home side started promisingly and Bobby Hassell had a thumping header saved by goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.

But Neil Danns got the eventual winner for the visitors when he cut inside from the left and curled a shot into the top corner in the 64th minute.

The Tykes struggled to mount a response and remain bottom of the Championship after their 12th defeat of the season.

Bolton's win, on the other hand, helped move them eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Danns, on loan from Leicester, proved the difference between the sides and, after Barnsley's strong start, he provided a sign of his threat when he had a powerful long-range shot saved.

Post Match: Bolton manager Freedman

Lonergan kept out Hassell's header and a well-struck Jim O'Brien effort before Bolton came close to snatching the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Tykes goalkeeper Luke Steele kept out Tim Ream's header from a Chris Eagles corner before Darren Pratley's follow-up effort was scrambled away on the line.

The visitors had gradually taken control of the match and were rewarded when Danns scored his fourth goal of the season.

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson:

"The three or four good chances we had, we just can't seem to get our noses in front at the moment. I think if we do that, you see a different team.

"We managed to steady ourselves [after the goal] and got good shape again and negated a little bit of their attacking play but, again, we couldn't seem to force it in the net at the other end and that's obviously a problem they've [the Barnsley players] had all season.

"You've got to look at who you're playing against as well - they're a quality side. They know how to see a game out and how to nullify when they've got their noses in front - that's the sign of a good side."

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman:

"When I go home and analyse it, it was pretty much a good, solid performance from us from a very difficult game.

"This is the third new manager we've faced away from home in a row [following trips to Middlesbrough and Wigan] so it's difficult for us.

"They were up for it, the crowd were up for it, so it's very pleasing to get the win, especially in the circumstances."
