Chesterfield manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"It is a tough performance to take, from starting the game so well and going a goal up.
"Sometimes as a manager you get these performances and you don't know where they've come from.
"It such a disappointing day, I don't want to elaborate on it too much."
Southend United assistant manager Dave Penney told BBC Essex:
"We started quite brightly, had a couple of chances. We were pressing well, it was completely against the run of play that they scored.
"There's a little bit of character and resolve if things do go against us. We haven't got a soft underbelly.
"With adversity, we seem to galvanise ourselves as a team and step up to the plate. To come here and win 3-1 is a great result for us."
