Oldham Athletic 1-0 Carlisle United

Adam Rooney's penalty ended Oldham's six-match winless run in League One to condemn Graham Kavanagh to a first defeat as manager of Carlisle United.

Having been fouled by Conor Townsend, Rooney converted the resulting spot-kick for the game's only goal.

Visiting keeper Mark Gillespie kept out efforts from Latics trio Kirk Millar, James Dayton and James Wesolowski.

At the other end, Latics keeper Mark Oxley made a brilliant save to deny Lee Miller's close-range header late on.

A frustrated Kavanagh was sent to the stands by referee Mark Heywood in the second half for sarcastically applauding a decision by the match officials.

Former Tottenham and France defender Pascal Chimbonda, who on Friday, played the full 90 minutes for the Cumbrians.

Oldham manager Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I'm delighted. We've had a couple of cup wins, so it's not been all bad, but today was a great win for us.

"It wasn't in vintage style, but a young group showed they could dig in and over the period of 10 or 11 games that we've had in the league so far, we've certainly earned one of them.

"When you're 1-0 up, you naturally sink back because you want to protect the lead.

"This group is growing and learning, and what I was really pleased with was in the last six or seven minutes, we kept in their half and that's clever play."

Carlisle United manager Graham Kavanagh told BBC Radio Cumbria:

Awful decision cost Carlisle - Kavanagh

"I tried to speak to the referee. Obviously, he decides that he wants to send me off and fair play to him, but I'm just disappointed.

"I sarcastically clapped him because he hadn't given us a decision all day. That was obviously wrong of me but, by the same token, he decided that he wanted to be the bigger and better man and send me off to the stand.

"The referee gives an awful decision and then he's completely inconsistent for the rest of his game. He books Mark Beck after three minutes.

"But you shoot yourself in the foot when you don't play to the levels that you need to. That was disappointing."
