Highlights - Rangers 4-1 Brechin City

Nicky Law impressed as Rangers opened their Scottish League One campaign with victory against Brechin City.

Chris Hegarty tapped the hosts ahead before Law fired home from 25 yards.

Steven Jackson's overhead kick reduced the visitors' deficit but Ian Black netted Rangers' third on the rebound after his penalty had been saved.

Paul McLean had been sent off after conceding the spot-kick and the 10 men fell further behind when substitute Dean Shiels curled in a superb shot.

Prior to kick-off, former Rangers player Sandy Jardine unfurled the championship flag to mark the Ibrox side's league title win last season, which secured promotion to Scotland's third tier.

And, after a first-round exit from the Scottish League Cup last week, the home side were eager to make an impression early on.

Law was one of two trialists fielded by Ally McCoist, with Rangers still banned from registering new players until next month, and the former Motherwell midfielder's low shot ricocheted off a defender for Hegarty to apply a simple finish.

Black tested Graeme Smith with a powerful blast off an indirect free-kick and the Brechin goalkeeper was quick off his line to deny Lee Wallace moments later.

Jackson cleared off the line from Robbie Crawford after Jon Daly had fired against the post but Rangers' pursuit of a second goal was rewarded when Law buried the ball from 25 yards.

Daly - McCoist's other trialist - and Lewis MacLeod kept Smith busy as half-time neared and the pressure on Brechin continued in the second half as Johnny Brown's defensive header hit bar.

But Brechin changed the complexion of the game when Derek Carcary's corner was half-cleared and Jackson beat keeper Scott Gallacher with a stylish volley.

However, McLean was dismissed for bundling Andy Little over in the box and though Smith saved Black's effort from 12 yards, the midfielder beat the 'keeper second time round.

And Crawford's replacement Shiels, back after a long injury lay-off, netted the pick of the goals from the left corner of the box, leaving Smith helpless.
