Bolton Wanderers defender David Wheater has signed a new three-year deal.

The centre-back, 26, signed for the Championship club from Middlesbrough two years ago and has now committed his future until the summer of 2016.

"I think we have a real chance to move forward this season and I believe the manager [Dougie Freedman] can get the best out of me as a player," he said.

"I'm really happy living in the area and have made lots of new friends since moving here from Middlesbrough."

Since arriving at the Reebok Stadium, Wheater has made 45 appearances, scoring three times, but played just four games last season as he recovered from a cruciate ligament injury.
