Dundee 0-3 Motherwell

Motherwell cemented their second-place spot in the Scottish Premier League with victory against Dundee, for whom relegation looms.

Michael Higdon nodded past goalkeeper Steve Simonsen to give the visitors an early advantage.

Gary Harkins and Jon Baird came close to levelling as the hosts sought to move closer to St Mirren.

But Nicky Law added to Motherwell's lead with a header and then a curling shot to leave Dundee 13 points adrift.

John Brown suffers his first league defeat as Dundee boss and the prospect of preventing relegation seems evermore forlorn for the Dens Park outfit, who have six matches left.

Motherwell remain three points ahead of Inverness and trail defending champions Celtic by 12 points ahead of Sunday's meeting between the league leaders and St Mirren in Glasgow.

Higdon headed Motherwell ahead at the far post following a Chris Humphrey cross from the right.

James McFadden tested Simonsen with a low shot and then Henrik Ojamaa connected weakly with a cross from the right to give the Dundee keeper an easy save.

Darren Randolph was also in action at the other end, pulling off a fine save from a Gary Harkins drive before Jon Baird fired just wide from the loose ball which fell to him on the rebound.

Law though grabbed two second half goals to put the game well beyond Dundee.

The midfielder ghosted across the box to head-flick home Keith Lasley's cross from the right and then curled a magnificent shot into the net after a corner fell neatly to him on the edge of the penalty area.
