Aidy Boothroyd to call on Northampton Town youth players

Northampton Town manager Aidy Boothroyd says the side's youth team players can provide a short-term answer to their injury crisis.

John Johnson is the latest player to be ruled out until the new year.

Boothroyd told BBC Northampton: "[The youth team] see Ivan Toney, David Moyo and Lewis Hornby in the team and they know they've got an opportunity.

"We won't be putting any pressure on them. But there's going to be a couple of others who're going to get a crack."

Sixteen-year-old Toney became the youngest-ever player to feature for the Cobblers first team in the FA Cup first round replay defeat by Bradford.

He then scored four goals in a 5-0 win over York City in the FA Youth Cup the following day, with Moyo also getting on the scoresheet.

And winger Callum Powell may be one of those set to make an appearance for the first team.

"For the short term, there may be some answers in that youth term," added Boothroyd, who still expects to make use of the loan market before the window closes next week.

"Callum did very well. His favourite player is [Cristiano] Ronaldo and he's not quite up at his level yet, but he certainly did very well.

"Circumstances have thrown Lewis Hornby into the fray but he's responded to it. Every now and again you get one who does go above and beyond and surprises you.

"I'm a big believer in youth. You don't want too many kids, but you don't want 'Dad's Army'."

Boothroyd has also praised veteran striker Clive Platt for his ongoing efforts for the team.

The 35-year-old scored his second goal of the season against Bradford and admitted he had been struggling with a long-term back injury until recently.

"I know what he's capable of," said Boothroyd.

"For one or two people, he might not be their cup of tea. But he's a tower of strength and he's reliable.

"He gets on with it and plays injured and there's plenty of players who get a twisted eyelash and want to lie in bed. People should look at what he does do."
