Croydon Athletic quit from Isthmian League

Non-league football

Croydon Athletic have resigned from the Isthmian League.

Athletic have lurched from crisis to crisis since a fine for making irregular payments to players and then-owner Mazhar Majeed being implicated in a cricket spot-fixing case in 2010.

Current owner Jenna Manji was allowed time to find new investors but the club have now admitted defeat.

A statement on the website entitled 'The End' read: "We apologise to the league clubs for any inconvenience."

It added: "The owner has today instructed the football club to write to the Ryman Isthmian Football League to indicate our intention to resign as a member club with immediate effect.

"The football club thanks the many players, officials, volunteers and supporters who have been part of the club since it was formed in 1986 and who have given tirelessly to it over that time."

Croydon were bottom of the Division One South with two points from 19 games after a 10-point deduction.

A league statement read: "The league has now received an email from Croydon Athletic Football Club which will enable the board to make a decision about the club.

"This will be considered at the board meeting to be held on 26 January and a further announcement will be made after that meeting."
