Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu is top target for Sochaux
Sochaux have revealed that Rangers' United States cap, Maurice Edu, is their top midfield target this month.
Reports suggest an offer in the region of £500,000 from the French club has already been rejected by Rangers.
And assistant coach Stephane Gilli told STV: "We are interested in bringing Maurice Edu to Sochaux.
"We have two or three other midfield targets, but it's fair to say that Edu is our number one target for the midfield position."
Rangers paid Major League Soccer £2.5m for Edu, who had been with Toronto, in 2008, when he signed a five-year contract at Ibrox.
And this month they entered talks about extending the stay of the 25-year-old, who has been capped 30 times for the USA and made up his 100th appearance for the Scottish champions when he played against Dundee United on 5 November.
However, Rangers remain under pressure to cut costs, although manager Ally McCoist is keen to retain his squad considering they have now lost their lead in the Scottish Premier League to city rivals Celtic.
Sochaux, who sit second bottom in the French top flight, are desperate to strengthen their own squad in their battle against relegation.
"I cannot say if we have made an offer to Rangers," added Gilli.
"We will be discussing transfer strategies with the president of Sochaux this evening."
