Peterborough 1-1 Birmingham

Marlon King's 94th-minute penalty salvaged a deserved draw for Birmingham City and denied in-form Peterborough United a third win in four games.

Posh led for more than 90 minutes, having taken the lead after just 29 seconds when Emile Sinclair ran through and slotted past keeper Boaz Myhill.

Both sides created a host of chances in a breathless, absorbing match.

But Sinclair's goal seemed set to win it until King's spot-kick after Gabriel Zakuani was penalised for handball.

Sinclair kicked things off by latching on to Joe Newell's pass and coolly netting his seventh goal of the season as City's rearguard appealed for offside.

Home skipper Steven Caldwell then denied Sinclair a second while at the other end Nikola Zigic fired a great chance into the side-netting when well placed.

Curtis Davies also sent a header narrowly over from Chris Burke's corner as the visitors began to get on top.

Posh keeper Joe Lewis was called upon to produce a great stop low down at his near post to keep out Zigic's effort as Birmingham failed to make the most of their dominance.

The home side went close to a second within three minutes of the restart as Paul Taylor's rifled effort was tipped over by Myhill and George Boyd and Taylor also both went close with long-range efforts.

Blues continued to threaten and create chances with Zigic once again firing wastefully wide and Davies heading another glorious chance over the bar from Burke's corner.

But just as the away fans' hopes were fading, King's penalty meant Blues avoided a third successive away defeat.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson: "I really couldn't see Birmingham scoring but then the referee has decided to give them a penalty.

"I've looked at it again on the DVD and if that is what constitutes a penalty these days, you'll see a hell of a lot of them given.

"The referee couldn't wait to give it and I really feel for my lads."

Birmingham City manager Chris Hughton: "I'm more disappointed that we didn't win the game than pleased about the fact we salvaged a point so late on.

"This game is all about putting the ball in the back of the net and we were found somewhat wanting in that regard.

"I didn't see the penalty incident live but I've had a look since and there is no doubt it is a spot-kick.
