Port Vale 1-2 Cheltenham

In-form Cheltenham continued their promotion charge as they overcame Port Vale and extended their unbeaten run in League Two to nine games.

Marc Richards went close to scoring for Vale in an uneventful first half but the hosts went behind after the break thanks to Alan Bennett's header.

Brian Smikle extended the Robins' lead when his 14-yard shot flicked past home keeper Stuart Tomlinson's fingers.

Sean Rigg fired in a late consolation for the hosts from eight yards.

Cheltenham are now just one point behind leaders Crawley, who fought back late on to draw 1-1 with Oxford.

Howarth praises patient Robins

Cheltenham Town assistant manager Neil Howarth told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:

"It wasn't the best advert for League Two, but it's a difficult place to come with a big open pitch and we had to adjust and acclimatise.

"We sat a bit deeper and we knew we would get more opportunities to push on and score as the game wore on.

"We didn't sign Bennett for his goalscoring, but everything he's done both on and off the pitch has been unbelievable."
