Southend 1-0 Hereford
Bilel Mohsni scored the only goal of the game as Southend narrowly defeated Hereford at Roots Hall.
The Shrimpers took the lead from their first attack of the game when Ryan Hall crossed in for Mohsni to head home.
Jemal Johnson should have added to the home side's lead but fired wide before a Neil Harris header was tipped over by Hereford keeper Adam Bartlett.
Joe Colbeck unleashed a shot for the visitors late on but had his effort charged down by Luke Prosser.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Southend manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:
"First half was very pleasing, we were very positive and didn't have that many scares.
"We got sloppy in the second half in spells and got a wee bit deep.
"With the chances made in the game I would say we deserved the win."
Hereford manager Jamie Pitman told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"We competed better in the second half and just needed a little bit more cutting edge at the end to maybe create a chance or two.
"But when they came under a bit of pressure to be fair to them they have defended well and got some great blocks in.
"We had to do the same on occasions but I thought we were probably the better side in the second half while they were in the first half."
