Steven Davies inspires Surrey's success over Sussex
|Friends Life t20, Whitgift School|
|Surrey 203-2 (20 overs) beat Sussex 185-5 (20 overs) by 18 runs|
Steven Davies smashed an unbeaten 99 off 56 balls to inspire Surrey to an 18-run FL Twenty20 win against Sussex.
Skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown made 52 as Surrey totalled 203-2 in a key South Group clash at Whitgift School.
Sussex opener Luke Wright then smashed 72 off 31 balls in a 109-run stand with Ben Brown, who went on to make 68.
But the visitors fell short on 185-5, Chris Schofield taking 2-28, to further complicate the race to finish second in the group behind Hampshire.
Surrey's victory before a 5,500 sell-out crowd, coupled with Essex's win against Somerset at Bath, means that five teams are now separated by just one point in the battle for the three remaining quarter-final places.
England one-day gloves man Davies improved his Twenty20 best for the second time in this year's competition, having hit an unbeaten 92 in Surrey's FL t20 campaign-opening eight-wicket win over Gloucestershire.
He was the main reason why Umar Gul and Wayne Parnell, Sussex's two overseas fast bowlers, conceded 85 runs between them.
The Sussex reply was then launched thrillingly by Wright, who smashed five sixes and eight fours in his cavalier knock. But, when he was caught at long-on off Schofield in the 10th over the visitors' chase lost its spark.
