England beat Taipai 3-2 in the opening tie of the Uber Cup

England's women got off to a winning start at the Uber Cup final in New Delhi as they beat Taipai 3-2.

Fontaine Chapman, 24, beat Pai Hsiao Ma 22-20 21-9, while Gabby Adcock and Lauren Smith beat Cheng Wen Hsing and Hsieh Pei Chen 15-21 21-15 21-13.

England's second doubles pair of Heather Olver and Kate Robertshaw secured the victory with a 21-13 21-13 win over Wang Pei Rong and Yu Wen Kuo.

Both Sarah Walker and Nicola Cerfontyne were beaten in the singles.

England now face China on Monday before what could be a group decider against Russia on Wednesday.

"I'm really pleased with the girls' performances today. Everyone brought a good level to their matches and we had an excellent spirit throughout the team," said team leader Pete Jeffrey.
