Liverpool have had a £20m offer for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren, 24, rejected, but are being frustrated in their attempts to wrap up a deal for the centre-back. Liverpool Echo

Manchester United have been offered Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, 26, for £40m. Arsenal, Paris St-Germain and Juventus have also expressed an interest in the Argentina international. Daily Star

Meanwhile, Mertesacker's Germany and Arsenal team-mate, striker Lukas Podolski has posted a picture of himself on Facebook ahead of the World Cup quarter-final against France on Friday.

Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who shrugged off questions regarding his future at Manchester United from the press on Friday, showed he was fully focused on the World Cup by taking to Facebook to post: "Looking forward to our match tomorrow against Argentina! Let's do this Belgium!!! ‪#‎tousensemble ‪#‎worldcup"

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 29, has posted the following message on Facebook after his country's World Cup exit: "Starting the holidays playing with the sun in this landscape. Thank you for the support during all season."

Brazil defender Marcelo has tweeted: "Your support has been the fuel of our team, thank-you! We will keep fighting for our dream! #allinornothing", ahead of their quarter-final against Colombia on Friday.

AND FINALLY

Attacking midfielder James Rodriguez, 22, filmed himself pulling a prank on one of his Colombia team mates, scaring him in his hotel room before their quarter-final with Brazil. Metro
