Zoe Smith sets two personal bests at World Weightlifting Championships

Britain's Zoe Smith  set two personal bests at the World Weightlifting Championships in Paris but opted not to go for the Olympic 'A' qualifying mark.

The 17-year-old Londoner lifted a combined total of 204kg, with 205kg the required 'A' standard for 2012.

But Smith was competing for the first time since May because of a back injury and chose not to risk aggravating it.

Smith lifted 92kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk, finishing in 15th place overall.

"The GB weightlifting coach Dave Sawyer tells me that with Smith's recent back problem they didn't want to risk it by pushing her any further," reports BBC Sport's Nick Hope on Twitter  .

"Sawyer adds that although 'A' standard pretty much guarantees Team GB selection in 2012, 'B' standard, which Smith smashed, is probably good enough."

Competitors complete snatch and clean-and-jerk lifts, with the total then combined. Smith needs to reach the 205kg mark twice in competition before May to achieve the 'A' standard.

"It feels great, especially after six months off the platform," she told BBC Sport. "I haven't competed since May because of various injuries so that really restores a lot of confidence, and to get some PBs just makes it a really good competition and I couldn't have asked for much more."

The competition was won by Russia's Svetlana Tsarukayeva, who lifted a combined total of 255kg.

Smith, who revealed that she had been suffering with a cold in Paris, plans to change her weight category in the build-up to next summer's Games.

"My glands are coming out of my ears, I think, and I can't breathe through my nose properly," she said. "But apparently having a cold can make you stronger, so I'm going to put it down to that today I think.

"The 'A' standard is 205kg in the 63s and I did 204kg. However, I'm probably going to drop to 58kg to be more competitive, because I've had a body-fat scan and it says that I could get down - I'm just lazy.

"I'm going to come down and kick some butt!

"I still need to improve though, because a 112kg clean and jerk won't cut it in the Olympics. I need to work hard all around, I think, because there's only about nine months to go."
