1207:
Ok, that's it from day eight at the Australian Open. Tomorrow sees the start of the men's and women's quarter-finals with Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska kicking things off at 00:00 (GMT) before Ferrer v Almagro and Makarova v Sharapova.
The night match (at 08:30 GMT) is an enticing prospect, with defending champ Novak Djokovic up against fifth seed Tomas Berdych.
Until then....
-
Stefan via text: "As much as Federer is impressing, the courts in Australia are too slow for him to defeat Tsonga, Murray and Djokovic inside 5 days."
-
Craig from London via text: "Re Greg Matthews - no depth past the top 5? You obviously missed the 15th ranked Wawrinka v Djokovic match."
-
1201:
Roger Federer's meeting with Tsonga is a repeat of their 2011 Wimbledon quarter-final, when Tsonga came from two sets down to pull off a huge upset.
Here's Federer's take on his opponent: "Jo-Wil is a good guy with a great game. He's a great shot-maker and a great character for the game. We didn't play at all last year but the year before we played each other three times in 10 days.
"We've just come from a trip together in South America where we played a couple of exhibition matches together and hung out. Hopefully we'll play a good match - it should be exciting."
-
1156:
Federer's victory completes the line-up for the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park. Here it is:
Djokovic v Berdych
Ferrer v Amagro
Chardy v Murray
Tsonga v Federer
-
Barry Flatman, Sunday Times tennis correspondent, on 5live sports extra: "I have been praising Roger Federer for more than 10 years but you can never, ever tire of seeing utter brilliance on the tennis court. And that is what this was.
"We hope a lot for Raonic. We see him as one of the top five players in the world in the next few years, but he didn't have an answer to Roger tonight."
-
Piers Newbery, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park"Speaking to some former players earlier today, several felt that Federer was a much better bet for the title than he has been given credit for. The Swiss has seen off several dangerous opponents with relative ease and looks to be benefiting from playing 'big' matches, while Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have yet to find their best form. As for Raonic, he at least leaves with the fastest serve (233kph/144.8mph) and the most aces (89) so far."
-
1150:
Federer is through to his 35th consecutive Grand slam quarterfinal and, on that showing, who is going to bet against him going all the way? He plays the dangerous Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga next before a potential semi-final against Andy Murray. The Scot looked far less convincing in beating the exhausted Gilles Simon than Federer did against Raonic, so Murray will need to raise his game fast if he's to stand a chance.
-
GAME, SET AND MATCH- Federer 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 6-2
Imperious from Federer as he booms a forehand down the line to go 30-0 up. A sublime backhand drop shot has Raonic groping at thin air and gives Federer three match points. He wastes the first, but takes the second with a wrong-footing forehand pass. And that, my friends, is that. Swiss gold.
-
*Federer 6-4 7-6 5-2 Raonic
Have some of that! Federer opens up with as ballsy a service return as you could see, punching a backhand past his opponent. Raonic hits back but messes up a forehand to take us to deuce. The Canadian somehow keeps Federer at bay and holds serve. But now here's Federer to serve for the match...
-
Barry Flatman, Sunday Times tennis correspondent, on 5live sports extra: "Raonic is clearly working on his movement. He isn't dumb. He knows his deficiencies. He knows he has this wonderful, great big thudding serve and he has to build his game up around it."
-
Richard Wilson on Twitter: "Fed has looked the best so far out of him, Novak and Andy! Straight sets every time and 3 tough opponents. Fed looking ominous."
-
Federer 6-4 7-6 5-1 Raonic*
Federer doesn't let the loss of his first game this set worry him in the slightest as he comfortably holds for a 5-1 lead. Raonic to serve now to stay in the match.
-
Greg Matthews on Twitter: "I keep hearing people say about the strength of men's tennis, but that is absolute trash. Beneath the top 5 there is nothing."
-
WHAT A SHOT!- *Federer 6-4 7-6 4-1 Raonic
Better from Raonic as he slams down a volleyed winner then aces for 40-0. Federer gets one back with an absolutely extraordinary service return turned drop shot that dies as it touches the ground about a foot the other side of the net. A double fault and a missed forehand and now we're at deuce. Raonic shows a bit of stomach for the fight to hang in there through a couple of deuces and get himself on the board for the first time in this set.
-
Federer 6-4 7-6 4-0 Raonic*
An atypically scrappy game from Federer results in the first deuce of the match on the Swiss legend's serve. But the tension is shortlived as Federer snuffs out Raonic's hopes as if he were squashing an irritating insect with the sole of his pink-laced shoe, sealing the game with an ace.
-
Barry Flatman, Sunday Times tennis correspondent, on 5live sports extra: "He does look a disconsolate young man, does Raonic."
-
*Federer 6-4 7-6 3-0 Raonic
Raonic's groundstrokes are a bit like Forrest Gump's infamous box of chocolates at the moment and two forehand error in a row gift Federer two more break points. He saves the first but fluffs yet another backhand volley to give Federer the double break.
-
Dom Breslin on Twitter: "A tiebreak of absolute class. Bided his time then pounced! Majestic from Mr Federer!"
-
Will from Cambridge via text: "People say that Raonic has an excellent serve and they're right but Federer hasn't faced a single break point yet this match. THAT is excellent serving."
-
Federer 6-4 7-6 2-0
Wow - two point in a row for Raonic on the Federer serve - the second via the Swiss's first double fault of the match. An absolute War and Peace of a rally (by the standards of this match anyway) follows but Raonic is the first to break as he can't clear the net with a backhand on the run. Federer closes on the game and consolidates the break.
-
*Federer 6-4 7-6 1-0 Raonic
Federer changes his shirt at the change of ends and settles down to receive the Raonic serve once more. Can he make lighter work of this set? It looks like he may well do as Raonic falls 0-30 behind. Federer is reading his serve like a book now and Raonic nets successive backhands to lose his serve to love.
-
Piers Newbery, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park"Raonic has won four points out of 53 on Federer's serve so far, and unfortunately for him they weren't all in the same game. Should Federer see this out he will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga next and there's a good chance that would be another night match, meaning Murray would be in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the UK. Possibly."
-
GAME AND SECOND SET- Federer 6-4 7-6 (7-4)
Ooh, could this be the moment?? Raonic comes in to the net on his second serve and Federer unfurls a sumptuous backhand into the open court for the mini-break. Federer follows up with two points on his serve - the second with an ace - to earn three set points. Raonic saves the first with a cracking forehand winner from the baseline but can do nothing about the second as Federer lashes a forehand passing shot down the line.
-
Barry Flatman, Sunday Times tennis correspondent, on 5live sports extra: "Federer is in exceptional form. We all turned up at Melbourne Park thinking will it be Murray again and if not Djorkovic and we possibly did a huge disservice to this great man.
"He is playing much, much, much better tennis at the moment then Andy Murray is playing. I think Federer is right in here for this title and I don't think that of Murray."
-
Federer 6-4 6-6 (Tie-break 3-3)
No sniff of a mini-break yet as Raonic nets a return then lands another ace to take us to the change of ends at 3-3.
-
Paul on Twitter: "First 10 days of men's tennis majors now merely a dress rehearsal for the inevitable semis (still worth the wait)."
-
Federer 6-4 6-6 Raonic
More powerplay from Raonic, following up his serve with a beast of a forehand into the corner to go 40-15 up. Another jolting first serve hits the frame of Fed's racquet to set up a tie-break.
-
Federer 6-4 6-5 Raonic*
This is starting to remind me of the dark old days at Wimbledon when a big server would take on a big server and rallies would be about as common as jacuzzis in the desert. Another Federer hold to love passes in the blink of an eye.
-
*Federer 6-4 5-5 Raonic
Raonic, sporting a Federesaue white headband and a loose-hanging gold chain, has not quite rescaled the heights of his 145mph serve in the first set, but even a 128mph effort is too quick for Federer. Then a 139mph ace down the centre to square things up at 5-5.
-
Federer 6-4 5-4 Raonic*
Raonic pushes a forehand return long then drills the next one into the net. Federer holds to love for the third time in a row to go 5-4 in front.
-
*Federer 6-4 4-4 Raonic
Federer's pink shoe laces get the thumbs down from a colleague, but I reckon the great Swiss is pulling off the look. Raonic serves his 12th ace to hold to 15. Looks like another tie-break, but didn't we say that in the first set?
-
Barry Flatman, Sunday Times tennis correspondent, on 5live sports extra: "By the third set Raonic will be thinking, "I've given this my best shot and that hasn't worked" and the spirit doesn't last long when you are playing Federer."
-
Federer 6-4 4-3 Raonic*
Federer remains impregnable on serve. Whether it's first or second, Raonic can't seem to get himself into the point. At 40-0, the Swiss aces down the middle.
-
Stuart Fraser on Twitter: "I really thought Federer would struggle against Raonic, but once again he proves all doubters that he is still one of the best."
-
*Federer 6-4 3-3 Raonic
Raonic nets to take the unforced error count to 20-3. But his big serve is keeping him in this. Federer slices a backhand return long and can't control his next return off another first serve bullet.
-
Joel Newnham on Twitter: "We seem to have a Canadian unforced error factory."
-
Federer 6-4 3-2 Raonic*
Federer, slick as ever in light grey with pink trimmings, loses the first point on his serve to raise the alarm bells, but wins the next four to move 3-2 in front.
-
*Federer 6-4 2-2 Raonic
Raonic is attacking the net whenever he can but he loops a half-volley long to give Federer a chance to put more pressure on at 30-30. Too big serves get the Canadian out of trouble and level up the second set at 2-2.
-
Greg Jordan on Twitter: "Loving this Australian Open, stan 'the man' v the number 1, Magic Murray v Simon and now the Fed v Raonic #topnotchtennis"
-
Federer 6-4 2-1 Raonic*
Raonic is still struggling to get close to the Federer serve. The Swiss, who has only lost three points so far on serve in the entire match and made just two unforced errors, holds again with ease.
-
Barry Flatman, Sunday Times tennis correspondent, on 5live sports extra: "It is wonderful to behold Federer's racket skills and control. He has a great big man who is not easy to pass and not easy to lob but he still does it."
-
*Federer 6-4 1-1 Raonic
Raonic holds to 15 with an excellent service game featuring three aces and a much more confident volleyed winner.
-
Federer 6-4 1-0 Raonic*
Can Raonic find a way to break the Federer serve? Not yet. Fed holds to 15 when Raonic nets with an attempted through-the-legs retrieve after a delicate lob from the Swiss.
-
Piers Newbery, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park"Another night on Rod Laver Arena and another packed and expectant crowd. The odds on this going five hours, or even four sets, just dipped dramatically. Raonic has pushed Federer very close in their previous three matches, but those two wayward forehands, a double-fault and a dodgy volley to give up the set suggest the Canadian is feeling the nerves tonight. "Roger Federer - he is a surgeon!" says the Italian gentleman behind me, incorrectly."
-
Matt McGladrigan on Twitter: "If Raonic's serve was a bit more average, I wonder how much his ranking would drop? Ground strokes, movement, variety are average."
-
GAME AND FIRST SET- Federer 6-4 Raonic
Federer takes the first point but Raonic levels with his seventh ace. An errant forehand from the Canadian gives Federer a sniff of a chance at 15-30 but again Raonic closes the door. He chooses the wrong time to double fault, however, handing the Fedster a set point. A great rally ensues before Raonic comes into the net and fluffs a backhand volley to give away the break, and the set.
-
Federer 5-4 Raonic*
Raonic is starting to get the odd serve back but as soon as we enter rally time, Federer comes out on top more often than not. A fifth ace, another hold to love, Raonic will serve now to stay in this first set.
-
Sam in Edinburgh via text: "On the flipside to this golden era in the men's game, the state of women's tennis is shocking. I've seen more bagels at this event than in a New York deli."
-
*Federer 4-4 Raonic
Raonic modelled his serve on that of Pete Sampras apparently and it seems to be working for him as he holds to 15 with an ace down the centre line. He has won three of his last four matches against top 10 opposition, the only loss coming to to Andy Murray at the 2012 US Open.
-
Federer 4-3 Raonic*
Brute force from both sides as they exchange forehand winners. At 40-15, a Raonic forehand barely gets above ground level and Federer takes the lead.
-
Steven Hill on Twitter: "Raonic serve is unreal! Like he's firing them out of a cannon at Federer!"
-
Joel Newnham on Twitter: "If Raonic can convert his unforced errors into winners, this could be a long match."
-
*Federer 3-3 Raonic
Raonic sends down a 145mph rocket of an ace but loses the next point when Federer successfully challenges the line judge's call. Federer wins the next two points to open up two break points but Raonic saves the first with another ace and the second when Federer nets. Federer keeps the pressure on with a sublime backhand pass but Raonic stays strong and holds with a smash.
-
Federer 3-2 Raonic*
Two more Federer aces are followed by a forehand slap from Raonic into the tramlines. An ace down the middle and it's 3-2 to Fed. If I tell you that four of their previous nine sets have gone to tie-breaks I very much doubt you will be surprised, will you? Federer leads the head to head series 3-0.
-
*Federer 2-2 Raonic
Neither player is laying a glove on the other's serve at the moment. This time it's the Canadian's turn to hold to love, sealing it with a wide ace that's miles beyond the Federer reach.
-
GregorCubie on Twitter: "For such an erudite guy and talented tennis player, Milos Raonic sure looks a lot like the Matt Damon puppet from Team America."
-
Federer 2-1 Raonic*
Raonic isn't holding back with his returns either, but he can't keep them in the court at the moment and Federer comfortably holds. The winner of this match faces Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-final.
-
*Federer 1-1 Raonic
Raonic has a huge serve, and i mean huge. An he hits his second almost as hard as his first. A double fault lets Federer claw it back to 40-30 but Raonic clinches the game with an extraordinary crosscourt volley from behind his back.
-
Matthew Vernon on Twitter: "Federer in three. Raonic will put up a fight but Federer will raise it when necessary."
-
Federer 1-0 Raonic*
Easy start for the Special One of tennis as he holds to love, serving an ace to go 40-0 up and a forehand winner to take the game.
-
0939:
One more match to go folks and it could be a cracker. World number two Roger Federer takes on young Canadian buck Milos Raonic for a place in the last eight. The Swiss is bidding to reach his 35th Grand Slam quarter-final in a row, Raonic to become the first Canadian in a Slam last eight in the Open Era. Gimme five.
-
Serena Williams: "I didn't expect to play so well - when I saw I had 95% first serves in the first set I thought 'wow who is this girl?'
On quarter-final opponent Sloane Stephens - "I think she's playing great. We played just two weeks ago in Brisbane, she played unbelievably well. I think she is an incredible talent and I admire her too. It will be a tough match for me but I feel like I have nothing to lose"
-
0935:
Serena Williams's victory sets up a sizzling quarter-final with Sloane Stephens, the American who has been dubbed "the new Serena."
-
GAME, SET AND MATCH- Williams 6-2 6-0 Kirilenko
Kirilenko looks determined to avoid the big fat zero, moving 30-15 ahead but can do nothing about an extraordinary dipping backhand pass from Williams. Another backhand, deep and devilish this time, takes the American to match point. Big rally and Kirilenko is the first to buckle, netting a backhand to seal her fate.
-
Williams 6-3 5-0 Kirilenko*
A bit more aggression from Kirilenko as she goes 30-15 ahead on the Williams serve. Maybe she's reading the live text and wants to prove me wrong? As soon as the point becomes a baseline rally, however, Serena's power starts to overwhelm her opponent and she sneaks 40-30 ahead with a drilled backhand. Kirilenko unfurls a backhand winner of her own to take the game to deuce but Williams holds with an ace and an unreturnable serve.
-
Luke Thomas on Twitter: "Oh for the days of the Belgians vs Williams sisters. Serena wins due to a will of iron, that virtually all the other women lack."
-
*Williams 6-2 4-0 Kirilenko
At 30-30, Kirilenko fluffs a drop shot to give Serena a sniff of a ninth successive game. A Kirilenko serve is dismissed out of hand with a backhand down the line. One-sided? At the moment I'm not even sure if the other side is on the pitch.
-
Williams 6-2 3-0 Kirilenko*
Williams has missed one first serve all match I'm told. The American bludgeons a backhand to go 40-15 ahead and takes the game when a Kirilenko forehand down the line catches the tape.
-
*Williams 6-2 2-0 Kirilenko
Kirilenko wins her first point in what seems like an age and follows up with a second to battle back to 30-30 on her own serve. But Williams fights back and on break point the Russian lands one long to fall 2-0 behind. This is going to be over in a flash.
-
Pushkar on Twitter: "Australian Open schedule suits students who are up at all hours to finish their coursework."
-
Williams 6-2 1-0 Kirilenko*
A textbook volley from Williams then Kirilenko lobs long. At 40-0, the Russian can't keep her return in the court and another game slips by.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"We see all this aggression and power with Serena Williams but there is no risk in it. It doesn't look like she is going to miss. With the utmost respect to Kirilenko, it is a bit of a clinic for Serena Williams. She is untouchable and unplayable in this kind of form. There is nothing the Russian can do about it. Complete dominance from Serena Williams."
-
GAME AND FIRST SET- *Williams 6-2 Kirilenko
Serena Williams is making ominously light work of Kirilenko out on Rod Laver. She's in a patch a purple as her eye-catching tennis dress. Blazing groundstrokes earn her a double break and the first set.
-
0901:
Murray's quarterfinal against France's Jeremy Chardy will take place on Wednesday. Chardy knocked out Juan Martin Del Potro so is more than likely to be the Scot's toughest opponent to date.
-
Serena Williams gets the early break against Russia's Kirlenko and currently leads 4-2 in the first set.
-
Rich Linfield on Twitter: "A dull and snowy morning brightened up by Murray. No sets dropped #letsgomurray"
-
Matthew Jones on Twitter: "The short matches will really help Murray as he gets deeper into tournament. Always raises his game against better opponents."
-
Piers Newbery, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park"Four matches, 12 sets and barely enough to raise an eyebrow in terms of drama. Murray's progress to the last eight has been as low-key and energy-efficient as you could wish for at a Grand Slam. The fireworks will come, but for now the Briton is better served by avoiding the kind of epic matches we have seen already this week. His fans seem happy enough, anyway, celebrating with more vigour than we've seen on court this afternoon."
-
0855:
A couple of stats from you from the Murray cakewalk. He served 12 aces to Simon's one. He won 91 points to his opponent's 62. He broke serve eight times and was broken twice. He won 77% of his first serve points to Simon's 57%. I think you get the idea.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"Difficult to get any satisfaction from a victory like that. It will be difficult for him to gauge his form from a game like that like. But at least he hasn't wasted any energy. As Simon walks off the court he gets some appreciation from the fans. He did well to stick it out."
-
Grant Campbell on Twitter: "Lots of people saying Murray hasn't been challenged yet in this year's tournament. You can only beat who is in front of you."
-
0850:
Don't go anywhere. Serena Williams has just started her fourth round contest with Maria Kirlenko - the American is 2-1 up in the first set - and after that second seed Roger Federer takes on the exciting Canadian Milos Raonic.
-
Andy Murray: "Obviously no-one knew how Gilles would be. He is one of the best movers on tour and clearly was struggling with his movement today. Grand Slams are so physical these days and it is tough."
On his quarter-final opponent Jeremy Chardy: "He's had two very good wins here, including beating [Juan Martin] Del Potro, and I lost against him the last time I played him in Cincinnati so it will be a tough match."
-
GAME, SET AND MATCH- Murray 6-3 6-1 6-3 Simon
Simon looks a broken man and Murray soon earns a match point, only to blow it with a forehand that clips the top of the net and drifts wide. Next time round, Simon serves and volleys but Murray passes with ease to book his place in the last eight.
-
Murray 6-3 6-1 5-3 Simon*
An easy hold for Murray and he is one game away from his ninth consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"It is seriously annoying when you are playing someone with an ailment and they keep coming up with million dollar shots."
-
*Murray 6-3 6-1 4-3 Simon
Simon's best bet is to serve and serve big. The tactic takes him 0-40 up. Murray slams a return winner but drags the next one wide. Simon calls for the trainer again at the change of ends.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"Murray is playing really smart tennis now. He just needs to aim for the space because Simon is not going to run for the ball."
-
Murray 6-3 6-1 4-2 Simon*
No, Simon is going to soldier on. But it's a very half-hearted effort as Murray holds to love. This is no longer a contest (if it ever was) but never fear we have Serena Williams and Roger Federer coming up, so stay with me.
-
Matthew Vernon on Twitter: "Is it worth noting both Federer and Nadal have won entire Grand Slams without dropping a set..? Some people are never happy..."
-
*Murray 6-3 6-1 3-2 Simon
Better from Simon, landing a few first serves to get himself to 40-15. Murray challenges on the next point, but replay shows the line was caught and Simon is back on the board. Simon stays out on the court to stretch his quads - and now he's calling for the trainer. Is this game over?
-
Matthew Jones on Twitter: "I love Simon's game. Now sporadically serving and volleying. His net play has been wonderful."
-
Murray 6-3 6-1 3-1 Simon*
Simon is still out there, but I think his mind is starting to wander, thinking about his inflight meal and a nice rom-com en route to Paris. Murray holds with minimum exertion.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"Murray has a very firm grip in the match. He is looking very calm and focussed sitting on the bench. None of that frustration of earlier."
-
*Murray 6-3 6-1 2-1 Simon
Murray is pulling out some of his tricks now, feinting to go down the line, then flicking crosscourt at the last minute. It's an easy break to 15 and I think the fat lady is warbling.
-
Murray 6-3 6-1 1-1 Simon*
More signs now of Simon sapping away, but it looks like he's going to be too proud to throw in the towel here. Murray holds to 15.
-
Richard Wilson on Twitter: "Murray hasn't even been in 3rd gear this whole tournament. He has barely been challenged yet. 11 straight sets, No tie-break."
-
*Murray 6-3 6-1 0-1 Simon
The pattern seems to be that as soon as Murray engages his opponent in a rally, he is more than likely to win the point. If Simon keeps points short, however, he has a chance and he holds serve with a neat serve and punchy volley.
-
Webs says on Twitter: "Murray is winning in convincing fashion but Simon is terribly handsome, very French and brooding."
-
Elliott Marks on Twitter: "Lots of chat about Murray being "undercooked"... I'm sure Novak's legs would love to be feeling "undercooked" right now!"
-
GAME AND SECOND SET- Murray 6-3 6-1 Simon*
Simon pulls off a corking return to give Murray a little wake-up call, but that's his lot for the game. Muzza surges to 40-15 and finishes off the set with an ace that curls well beyond the Frenchman's reach. We've had 67 minutes and Murray is already two sets up. This has the air of a gentle Sunday stroll.
-
Dave in Southampton via text: "Re Simon Richardson. That is a touch disrespectful. Chardy played excellently to beat Del Potro, and dispatched Seppi this morning! Although I agree the draw on paper has been very kind to Murray thus far."
-
*Murray 6-3 5-1 Simon
Simon knows he needs to try to upset Murray's rhythm here but he doesn't look comfortable trying to force things and a couple of wayward backhands take us to deuce. Another backhand drifts wide and Murray has a break point. He wastes the first, but takes the second and is now just one game shy of a 2-0 lead.
-
Owen Evans on Twitter: "Wake up to find I have a snow day, guess it would be rude not to watch Muzza now!"
-
Scott Lazell on Twitter: "A classic Andy Murray performance so far. Good shots, lazy ones & gifting of service breaks back to his opponent."
-
Murray 6-3 4-1 Simon*
Despite the scoreline, Murray is not playing with any great consistency here and is taken to 30-30 on his serve by Simon. The Scot gathers himself though and clinches a 4-1 lead with an ace down the middle.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"It was patient play there from Andy Murray. If he can get in the rhythm of going from side to side to side you sense that will be the end of Simon."
-
Stuart Carruthers on Twitter: "What is the shortest amount of time someone has been on court to reach the semis? Think Murray might be undercooked for semis ."
-
*Murray 6-3 3-1 Simon
Murray chunters away to himself in the break between games and comes out roaring with some booming groundstrokes to nab two break points. Murray gobbles up the second as his opponent runs out of juice mid rally and pushes a backhand into the net.
-
Piers Newbery, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park"Simon's obvious exhaustion is channelling itself to the crowd on Hisense Arena, and the atmosphere is subdued as Murray goes about putting the Frenchman out of his misery. A valiant effort of 'Judy, give us a wave!' (successful) rouses everyone momentarily, but when Murray breaks serve again, Simon looks ready to call it a day."
-
Murray 6-3 2-1 Simon*
Murray goes 30-15 up but lets his opponent off the hook with an underhit backhand and a horribly wayward overhead. Break point for Simon... Great return, he's into the net and finishes it off with an emphatic smash! Did Murray get a bit complacent there, thinking his opponent was dead and buried?
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"Simon is being yanked around the court as if he is on the end of a piece of string."
-
*Murray 6-3 2-0 Simon
Signs that there is still a bit of life in the Simon pegs as he sprints into the net to execute a perfect drop volley, but there's no let up from Murray as he works his opponent around the court to pick up a break point. Simon saves it with a big serve but Murray is happy to wait for his chance, and he takes his third break point with an exquisite forehand pass. Simon's hands are on his knees. He looks like a boxer who's done 10 rounds with Tyson.
-
Simon Richardson on Twitter: "Murray isn't going to have to do much here & Chardy is nowhere near good enough to worry him. Will he be undercooked in the semis?"
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"The best players in the world play more aggressively when they are up and Murray is looking to turn the screw."
-
Murray 6-3 1-0 Simon*
Simon goes 0-30 up on the Murray serve, but the Scot finds his range with an ace and a couple of clean winners and holds at the first opportunity. Simon required three hours of treatment after his gruelling battle with Monfils - he was even too tired to do the post-match press conference - and it's pretty clear he's hurting out there already.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"It is interesting, Simon is walking up to the umpire's chair and having a look at the umpire and you can see the doubt in his mind about whether he can carry on. The only thing that will keep him going is whether he thinks he has any chance of winning."
-
GAME AND FIRST SET- *Murray 6-3 Simon
Muzza opens up a 0-30 lead on the Simon serve before netting with his 14th unforced error of a scrappy first set. Simon then goes long to hand Murray a break point and the Scotsman takes it when Simon can't clear the net with a forehand from out wide. Cut to Murray's coach Ivan Lendl, whose face is as icy cool as ever behind the shades. His expression is a bit like a James Joyce novel - impenetrable but intriguing in equal measure.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"Simon is looking very gaunt in his face. If Andy Murray establishes a decent lead you wonder how much longer he will last."
-
Murray 5-3 Simon*
Another effortless love service game takes Murray to within one game of the first set. Simon is looking pretty knackered already, which is understandable given his 4 hour, 43 minute slog with Gael Monfils in the third round. Murray meanwhile, has spent just 5 hours, 30 minutes on court in the entire tournament.
-
Gregor Cubie on Twitter: "Nice of big JW Tsonga to lend Andy Murray his backhand for this match. So erratic."
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"Murray has a phenomenally heavy racket. When you get it moving its a heavier frame and you get more speed. But when you have a heavy racket, you have to prepare early enough to get it going and get it swinging."
-
*Murray 4-3 Simon
At 30-all Murray is threatening another break but Simon pulls out a big first serve to sneak ahead. In the next point Murray pulls his opponent hither and thither to take the match to deuce. A successful challenge earns a break point which Simon saves with some lovely groundstrokes, but a double fault puts the Frenchman under the cosh again. Murray nets tamely and Simon pulls through with a couple of forceful serves.
-
Joel Newnham on Twitter: "Murray v Simon not a very exciting match yet, looks a bit more like a practice session so far."
-
Murray 4-2 Simon*
Murray heeds the Bates call and cranks up the volume a touch to win his serve to love.
-
Jeremy Bates, BBC Radio 5 live"Andy Murray is feeling his way into this game a little bit and once he builds a lead I think we will see a bit more power."
-
Good news for Team GB (sorry) in the girl's doubles where Harriet Dart and her partner Ching-Wen Hsu of Chinese Tapei have beaten Aussie pair Ellen Perez and Belinda Woolcock 6-4 7-5 to reach the second round.
-
*Murray 3-2 Simon
Simon lands a few first serves to stop the rot and holds serve to 15. In case you're just joining us, I should inform you that the winner of this match will play France's Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinal after he beat Italy's Andreas Seppi 5-7 6-3 6-2 6-2. Chardy had never previously got beyond the second round in six visits to Melbourne.
-
Murray 3-1 Simon*
Murray has played 14th-seed Simon 10 times and won the last nine of them. But he's not finding it easy here as Simon takes him to deuce. Murray chooses a good time to send down his first ace of the match - but fluffs his lines by dumping a straightforward forehand into the net. Murray, however, does hold his serve at the second attempt to take a 3-1 lead.
-
*Murray 2-1 Simon
The serving struggles continue as Simon falls 0-30 behind, before hauling it back to 30-all as Murray misses the lines with a couple of loose swings. An immaculate drop shot earns Murray a break point which he converts with a fluent crosscourt winner.

Murray 1-1 Simon*
Hi there, Sam Sheringham here to guide you through the remainder of this match. I've just arrived and this feels a bit like turning up to a golf course and being told your tee off time is in five minutes. No practice swings, no putting green, just have a swing. Here's hoping I don't shank one into the trees.
A big surprise in Murray's first service game as Simon breaks him to love. Murray lets a passing shot go and sees it clip the line, then pushes a forehand drive wide of the line and throws away the break. Seven points in a row against the serve.
-
Piers Newbery, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park"It's bright and breezy on Hisense Arena and this feels just about the perfect time to play, although Gilles Simon might think next month would be ideal. The Frenchman has given himself "not much chance" of winning this match, which is probably about right. See you in five hours...."
-
*Murray 1-0 Simon
The match has started the way the bookmakers' predicted. The third seed stepping into the Simon serve and getting plenty of reward, although a 25-shot baseline slug-fest ends in the Frenchman's favour for 30-30. Another lengthy rally... and this time it goes Murray's way for a break point and the world number 16 meekly surrenders by plonking a backhand into the tape.

0707:
Murray, his black T-shirt with splashes of yellow on the sleeves seems a perfect fit, not too tight, limbering up. Final glug on the energy drink before the Scot strides to the baseline to face the Simon serve. How much juice has the Frenchman got left in the tank? We're about to find out.
-
0703:
Poor old Gilles Simon. After a brutal five hours of tennis most of us would need at least a few days rest, if not a week - or even a month - to recover. Unfortunately for the Frenchman - a man who admitted he was "almost dying" after his gruelling third-round tussle with Gael Monflis - he must play Andy Murray, a man who gave himself 10 out of 10 for his performances during the first week in Melbourne Park.
