Mattek-Sands and Tecau came close to not entering the tournament
Mattek-Sands and Tecau win Australian Open mixed doubles title
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Horia Tecau won the Australian Open mixed doubles title on a champions tie-break.
American Mattek-Sands and Tecau of Romania beat Russia's Elena Vesnina and Indian Leander Paes 6-3 5-7 10-3.
The number eight seeds showed enormous composure to run away with the tie-break after Vesnina and men's doubles winner Paes won the second set.
Tecau volleyed the winning point into the open court as he and Mattek-Sands claimed their first title as a pairing.
"We almost didn't play mixed this year but we pulled through," said Mattek-Sands.
