Bryan brothers fall to shock defeat in Australian Open men's doubles

Top seeds Mike and Bob Bryan were denied a record 12th men's Grand Slam doubles title after a shock defeat by Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek.

The American brothers were beaten 6-7 (1-7) 2-6 in one hour and 24 minutes.

Victory for India's Paes, winner of 47 career doubles titles, secured him a career grand slam of double titles.

Stepanek said: "I know what this means for [Paes] because this title was missing from his career grand slam and I'm happy I can be by his side."

Serve dominated the opening set, with just a single break point for each pairing and no breaks of serve, but the unseeded Paes and Stepanek dominated the tie-break to clinch the first set.

The Indian-Czech pair, playing just their fourth Tour-level event together, broke serve in the second game of the second set and broke again to secure a comprehensive victory.

Defeat means the Bryans remain on 11 titles, an open era record they share with Australia's Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodford.
