Scots duo win 2011 Unsung Hero award

Do you know someone who goes the extra mile to help out in local sport?

Someone of any age who coaches, administers or organises clubs in their free time?

Do they do it for no reward except the enjoyment of seeing sport flourish in their communities across the UK?

If so, they are one of the many unsung heroes working in sport and since 2003 the BBC has recognised their achievements with our Sports Unsung Hero Awards.

Nominations come entirely from members of the public, with regional winners being chosen by judging panels throughout the UK in late November.

All 15 regional winners then go forward to final judging for the overall BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award, announced live during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme on BBC One in late December.

Recent winners have included 2011's Janice Eaglesham and Ian Mirfin from Cambuslang in Scotland, for their work with disability sport, and Lance Haggith from Bedford, who picked up the award in 2010 for his work with children and young people of all abilities.

Please return to this page in September to download a nomination form, or you can register your interest by sending an email with your details to sportsunsunghero@bbc.co.uk and we will be in touch when nominations open.

Some of the recent overall Unsung Hero Award winners have included:

2006 - Val Hanover. She trains children with learning difficulties in North Shropshire for the Special Olympics.

2007 - Margaret Simons. She has run Bardwell Football Club in Oxfordshire since founding it in 1964.

2008 - Ben Geyser. He is the driving force behind Dorchester Boxing Club.

2009 - Doreen Adcock. The 73-year-old swimming instructor has taught more than 13,000 people to swim in Milton Keynes over the last 35 years.

2010 - Lance Haggith. He works tirelessly in grassroots sports in Bedfordshire, raising money from three sports kit shops.

2011 - Janice Eaglesham and Ian Mirfin. Started the Red Star Athletics Club in Glasgow and have trained over 150 disabled athletes.
