As it happened

  1. 21:55:

I'll sign off now. Many thanks for your company and hearty congratulations to Inverness for reaching the last eight in the Scottish Cup. Caley Thistle fans can still dream of picking up two trophies this season...

  2. 21:54:

It's a long journey home for any of the visiting party going all the way back to Stranraer. "We might be home for Thursday," jokes Blues boss Stephen Aitken. Maybe he's got his eye on a night out in the Highland capital.

  3. 21:52:
Stranraer boss Stephen Aitken on BBC Radio Scotland

"We gave it a go and I thought we competed well again. It was just the wee bit of quality that Inverness have that has done us in.

"We worked hard against a good side and over the two games I couldn't be any happier with my players."

  4. 21:49:
Inverness manager John Hughes on BBC Radio Scotland

"Stranraer are a tidy side with a good shape about them. I've seen us play better but we had total control and created all of the chances.

"I'm really looking forward to the quarter-final with Dundee United. It's about trusting your players and enjoying yourself. You don't have to tell these guys, they just go out and do their work."

  5. 21:46:
Inverness are still going in both cup competitions and have the League Cup final to look forward to next month. Inverness are still going in both cup competitions and have the League Cup final to look forward to next month.
  6. 21:44:
BBC Radio Scotland pundit John Robertson

"You would expect Aberdeen and Rangers to win and St Johnstone to squeeze through against Raith Rovers but Inverness v Dundee United is impossible to call."

  7. 21:41:

Who do you fancy for the cup now? Aberdeen are favourites after knocking Celtic out in the previous round.

Inverness CT v Dundee United looks like the plum tie in the quarter-finals. There was a lot of argy-bargey when the Highlanders knocked United out of the League Cup earlier this season.

  8. 21:38:

So, here's the full Scottish Cup quarter-final draw:

    Raith Rovers v St Johnstone

    Aberdeen v Dumbarton

    Inverness CT v Dundee United

    Rangers v Albion Rovers

Ties to be played on 8/9 March.

  9. 21:35:

Stranraer were always up against it after conceding such an early goal but credit to the League One part-timers who made a real game of it. Stephen Aitken's men were neat in possession but didn't threaten too much, although it needed a top drawer save from Dean Brill to keep out Steven Bell's long-range effort.

  10. 21:33:
    FULL-TIME- Inverness 2-0 Stranraer

The Highlanders are through to the last eight in the Scottish Cup where they will meet Dundee United. Nick Ross and Aaron Doran got the goals at the start and finish off this replay.

  11. 21:31:
    GOAL- Inverness 2-0 Stranraer (Doran)

It's game over as Aaron Doran flashes an excellent dipping shot past David Mitchell.

Tom Watson on Twitter: #bbcsportscot Colin, do u mean to say that i'm reading comments about your commentary on the commentators?

You have seen through the artifice. It's just like the Wizard of Oz, isn't it?

  13. 21:28:

The man-of-the-match award goes to ICT midfielder Greg Tansey, the stadium announcer tells us.

David Kelly on Twitter: "C'mon Stranraer, one last big push. #bbcsportscot"

We have four minutes of normal time remaining...

  15. 21:24:

Steven Bell tries his luck from distance again but the shot is wildly off target this time. He had colleagues screaming for the ball but you can hardly blame him after coming so close with his earlier effort.

  16. 21:23:

Aaron Doran twists and turns on the edge of the penalty area before laying a pass off to Richie Foran but the ball is sitting in a horrible clump of mud and sand and the Inverness skipper skews his shot well wide of the mark.

  17. 21:20:

Match commentator Rob Maclean suddenly bursts into life as Steven Bell thunders in a long-range effort and Inverness keeper Dean Brill leaps up to claw the ball away from the postage stamp corner.

Sandy Archibald on Twitter: "Not much action from Caledonian Stadium tonight based on the sparse updates. Maybe it is too cold to type-up the action. #bbcsportscot"

I'm nice and warm in the Glasgow office, Sandy. But I can't see the game. I'm relying on the radio commentary for updates and commentator Rob Maclean is in danger of dozing off.

JillyKate on Twitter: "Finding it hard to get an impression of the game. Fair to say @ICTFC have had more chances? #bbcsportscot"

Apologies. It's my job to give an impression of the game. David Mitchell has certainly been the busier goalkeeper but Inverness have not had it all their own way and a lot of the earlier zip has disappeared from the game. That may be down to the soggy pitch.

  20. 21:11:

David Mitchell punches away a dangerous cross and the Stranraer keeper crumples in a heap. No foul as the ball falls to Greg Tansey but he can't fire a shot in on the unguarded goal since Grant Gallagher makes a vital block.

  21. 21:09:

Aaron Doran, just on for Ross Draper, races onto a Greg Tansey pass and is wiped out by Stranraer full-back Mark Docherty as he tries to get into the penalty area.

  22. 21:07:

Graeme Shinnie powers in a hard and low corner for a runner at the front post. Stranraer struggle to clear their lines and Billy McKay pops the ball into the net - from an offside position.

  23. 21:01:

The game is maybe getting bogged down on the sticky pitch since neither goalkeeper has had much to do for a while.

Billiam Mcboab on Twitter: "How much does Billy Dodds actually hate ICT? #bbcsportscot"

They're just about the only top flight side Doddsy hasn't played for. The wee man was even having a dig at his half-time pie, complaining about having to pick flaky pastry off it...

  25. 20:56:

Lionel Messi has slotted Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot against 10-man Man City and Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored twice as PSG lead 3-0 at Bayer Leverkusen. But could those guys control the ball in the Inverness mud like Ross Draper and James Vincent?

  26. 20:52:

Richie Foran dinks the ball forward and Nick Ross nods it into the path of the galloping Greg Tansey but here comes Stranraer keeper David Mitchell dashing off his line to smother bravely.

  27. 20:49:

Mark Docherty dithers on the ball and Inverness playmaker James Vincent almost nicks it off his toes but the defender recovers to get the ball away safely.

  28. 20:47:

The second half is up and running. Can Stranraer find a way back?

Andrew Priestley on Twitter: "I didn't realise that Stranraer's manager was Tin-Tin's long-lost twin brother! The resemblance is uncanny. #bbcsportscot"

  30. 20:44:
BBC Radio Scotland pundit Billy Dodds

"I wouldn't rule Stranraer out this one yet. Inverness have created the better chances but they will get nervous if they don't get a second goal."

  31. 20:40:

Remember, the winners of this game will have a home tie against Dundee United to look forward to in the last eight of the Scottish Cup.

  32. 20:35:
Stranraer boss Stephen Aitken Stranraer boss Stephen Aitken will be pleased by the way his League One side have settled into the game after conceding that early goal.
  33. 20:31:
    HALF-TIME- Inverness 1-0 Stranraer

In spite of a heavy pitch, both sides have served up some neat attacking play but it was something of a fluke that led to Inverness taking a third-minute lead as the ball cannoned off Nick Ross and bounced past David Mitchell. The visiting goalie has since made a couple of good saves.

  34. 20:29:

Nick Ross storms forward again as Inverness continue to concentrate most of their attacks down the left flank but Scott Robertson is there to block the danger this time. It was the full-back's error that gifted Ross the early goal that separates the sides.

  35. 20:24:

From a Nick Ross pass, Billy McKay takes a wonderful touch with his right foot then promptly smashes in a shot with his left but he can't get past David Mitchell, who makes a smart save to keep the score at 1-0 to Inverness.

  36. 20:23:

Andy Stirling whips a terrific free kick into the mixer and it needs an equally impressive diving, headed clearance from Inverness skipper Richie Foran to avert the danger.

  37. 20:22:

Inverness could do with a home win since they haven't had one since the last round of this tournament; against Morton in November.

  38. 20:19:

Graeme Shinnie loves to get forward and the Inverness left-back sends a fizzing shot narrowly over the top after his attempted pass breaks back into his path.

  39. 20:18:

Inverness may be big time Charlies in the top flight these days but Stranraer have had the best of previous meetings, winning four and losing just twice in the nine games played between the sides.

One of those Caley Thistle victories was on penalties in the 1997 Scottish Cup and we'll have spot-kicks again tonight if the teams cannot be separated after extra time.

  40. 20:16:

Defender Scott Rumsby, on loan from Aberdeen, gets his head to a corner kick but the ball loops harmlessly over the Inverness crossbar.

  41. 20:12:

Dean Brill gives the home fans a scare as he thumps a clearance straight at advancing striker Martin Grehan. The big goalie gets away with his error of judgement though as the ball rolls to safety.

  42. 20:10:
BBC Radio Scotland pundit Billy Dodds

"It was a freak goal and the teams have been pretty much evenly-matched so far."

  43. 20:05:

Goalscorer Nick Ross powers forward as the rain eases off but he's stretching as he gets into the penalty area and his shot has no power to trouble David Mitchell.

  44. 20:03:
Nick Ross Nick Ross celebrates his early goal, which owed a lot to good fortune as he didn't know too much about it.
  45. 20:01:

Inverness midfielder Ross Draper gets his head to a Greg Tansey corner and David Mitchell makes another good stop as the game continues to ebb and flow at a rapid rate of knots.

  46. 19:59:

It's Stranraer 's turn to threaten as Sean Winter squeezes away a shot as he drives into the penalty box. The ball flies straight at Dean Brill but it's a wee warning for the home side.

  47. 19:58:

Inverness spring a swift counter-attack, which culminates with full-back Graeme Shinnie connecting with David Raven's cut-back but David Mitchell gets down well to make a good save.

  48. 19:57:
BBC Radio Scotland pundit John Robertson

"I've been impressed with the way Stranraer are knocking the ball about. They like to get the ball forward quickly and I can see why they've scored so many this season."

  49. 19:53:

Greg Tansey has a pop at goal from 25 yards but his fierce strike is straight at Stranraer keeper David Mitchell, who is neither a best-selling author or TV funny man.

  50. 19:48:
    GOAL- Inverness 1-0 Stranraer (Ross)

Oh dear; not a great start for Stranraer... Full-back Scott Robertson gets in a fankle trying to hack the ball away under little pressure and his clearance rattles off the shins of Nick Ross and dribbles over the line.

  51. 19:47:

Greg Tansey clips an early free kick into the penalty box but the home team make a mess of it and the ball rolls out of play.

  52. 19:46:

    The game is under way...

  53. 19:43:
The match officials ruled that the Caledonian Stadium pitch is playable after a period of very heavy rain The match officials ruled that the Caledonian Stadium pitch is playable after a period of very heavy rain
  54. 19:41:

Stranraer have already knocked out Scottish Premiership opposition this season, beating Ross County 3-2 in the second round of the League Cup then gave Hibernian a scare before losing 5-3 at Easter Road at the next stage.

A 1-1 draw at Ibrox in December means they are also the only side to take a point off runaway League One leaders Rangers and Stephen Aitken's side have surprised many by sitting in third place.

  55. 19:38:

Inverness CT will play in the League Cup final next month and, not content with reaching a first major final, will have an eye on going all the way in this tournament as well since holders Celtic tumbled out in the previous round.

Stranraer's Martin Grehan on Twitter: "I'm looking forward to this game tonight as no one expects us to get a result. If u apply urself right u never know in football #scottishcup"

  57. 19:33:
Stranraer manager Stephen Aitken on BBC Radio Scotland

"It's a cup tie and you never know how it will go. It could come down to a mistake, with the ball getting stuck in the mud. The rain is a worry but I think it's the right decision to start the match."

  58. 19:31:

Inverness CT: Brill, Raven, Warren, Meekings, Shinnie, Foran, Ross Draper, Tansey, Vincent, Ross, McKay. Subs: Esson, Doran, Devine, Watkins, Tremarco, Polworth, Pepper.

Stranraer: Mitchell, Robertson, Rumsby, McKeown, Docherty, Gallagher, Bell, Winter, Longworth, Andrew Stirling, Grehan. Subs: McKenna, Fahey, MacGregor, Kinnaird, Forde.

    Referee: Alan Muir

  59. 19:30:

Let's hope the rain eases off. The part-timers from League One set off for the Highlands this afternoon and those leaving from Stranraer face a 10-hour round-trip, travelling 510 miles on the team bus.

None of the players have had any bother getting time off work but there may be a few bleary-eyes tomorrow.

Of course, it will all be worth it if the Blues reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2003.

  60. 19:28:
BBC Radio Scotland match commentator Rob Maclean

"The surface looks like Balmedie Beach. There is sand all over the park and this match could become something of a joke unless the rain stops soon."

  61. 19:25:

Heavy rain this afternoon called for a pitch inspection and a few flickering bulbs in the floodlights gave cause for concern but, fear not, the game goes ahead.

Inverness boss John Hughes tells BBC Radio Scotland that the surface "looks like Wembley"...

  62. 19:23:

This tie is a fifth-round replay since the teams drew 2-2 at Stair Park first time round, with Caley Thistle's top-scorer Billy McKay finding a 74th-minute equaliser.

And a last-eight clash at home to Dundee United is the prize for the winners.

  63. 19:20:

Champions League? You're having a laugh.

Forget Yaya Toure, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Xavi, Simon Rolfes, Thiago Silva, Vincent Kompany and co, this is where the real action is.

Welcome to our coverage of Inverness Caledonian Thistle v Stranraer in the Scottish Cup.
