The Scarlets have signed back-three player Frazier Climo from New Zealand province Taranki.
Climo, 26, is not expected to arrive in west Wales until November 2013, with his visa application ongoing.
He has also played at fly-half and the Scarlets say a 2012 goal-kicking success rate of over 80% was a major reason for their interest.
"We are very pleased Climo is joining us," said Scarlets coach Simon Easterby.
"He's been a standout for the provincial side Taranki in the NPC over the past few years.
"We look forward to what he can bring to what is already a very talented and Scarlets backline."
Climo, whose wife is Scottish, played for Ayr in 2008-9.
He said: "I am delighted to be joining the Scarlets, which is clearly a club with a great history and brilliant, passionate supporters.
"It's a region that's known and respected around the world and I am honoured to have the opportunity to link up with such a great club.
"Having spoken to Simon Easterby about the very young and talented squad based in west Wales, I am extremely excited to play a part in the club's ambitions this season and looking forward to linking up with everyone in November.
"I'll work hard to really contribute widely to its future success."
