Ben Foden to miss autumn Tests with ankle injury
England full-back Ben Foden will miss the autumn internationals after being told he needs surgery on an ankle ligament injury.
The 27-year-old was hurt while playing for Northampton Saints against Bath.
Stuart Lancaster England boss“We have a number of back three players who are playing well and this offers a chance for them"”
He will have surgery in the next few days and is then likely to be out for 10 to 12 weeks.
England face Fiji at Twickenham on 10 November, followed by games against southern hemisphere giants Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
England have options for the number 15 shirt with Mike Brown and Alex Goode both having filled the role during the summer tour to South Africa.
Head coach Stuart Lancaster said: "It is unfortunate for Ben who has had a good run in the side and is a valuable leader.
"But we have a number of back three players who are playing well and this offers a chance for them.
"Our medics will work closely with Northampton Saints to help Ben's recovery and I am sure he will be available for the RBS 6 Nations."
Northampton boss Jim Mallinder said: "Ben had been playing well at the start of this season and to lose him to injury is obviously disappointing.
"But we know that he is a dedicated professional and will work his hardest with our performance team to come back as a better and fitter player."

i think ben ransom is a bright prospect as a non english fan, why not give him ago in the squad, england need to build for 2015 and beyond, the SH teams dont hesitate to throw talented youth in at the deep end, its worked for wales and scotland, imagine what it can do for england with their huge player pool

Watch a lot of Bath's games do you, Tom Rowlands? Your verdict of him under a high ball and his defensive game suggests you don't see Bath play v often.
Yes, I am bias (to a certain degree), but I'm curious to know to why you think Bendy falls so short in these areas?
The lad has never had a fair crack at the 15 jersey for England. Give him the chance and he will impress.

As a welshman i hope foden is fit for 6nations as all countries that will represent the Lions next year have a superb back3. The welsh back3 are in the ascendency but am scared by a foden, ashton & ano combination with england, scotlands new fullback and visser look very talented and Kearney is the best fullback in six nations (put our lee byrne in his place in Lions tour). Bring on the 6nations
