Hull KR appoint Stanley Gene as Under-18s coach

Hull Kingston Rovers have appointed former Robins forward Stanley Gene as their Under-18s academy coach.

The ex-Papua New Guinea international is new Rovers coach Craig Sandercock's second backroom appointment.

The 37-year-old, who scored over 100 tries in two spells for KR, told BBC Radio Humberside: "It's great to be back after two years in the wilderness.

"The call came in and I'm so pleased to be back. It's a place that's been part of my life since I left my country."

Gene had been coaching in France after leaving Halifax halfway through a two-year contract and returns to Craven Park with international coaching experience with his homeland.

He said: "It was a great experience for me and there'll be a time that comes when I put my hand up again and go and coach the country as a head coach, which is still a dream job for me."

The former Huddersfield and Hull FC man is now keen to kick-start his club coaching career saying: "It's a great start for me.

"The junior coaches have done a tremendous job and for me to come in with young kids playing first-team football next year will be more challenging."
