    Phelps has yet to shine in London, but he can make history in his favourite event on Tuesday by equalling Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's record tally of 18 Olympic medals.

    Chinese 16-year-old Ye Shiwen is fast becoming the story of the Games, breaking the world record when winning the 400m medley on Saturday. As world champion in the 200m medley, she is a strong favourite for a second gold in the shorter race

    Beth Tweddle produced one of the best performances of her life on the uneven bars as the British women matched the men's performance by reaching the team final. The US, Russia, China and Romania finished ahead of Tweddle and her team-mates in qualifying.

    (13:30-14:08; 15:06-15:32 ): David Florence, men's single

    Florence won silver in this C1 category in Beijing. Now, after finishing fifth in Sunday's heats, he must attempt to qualify as one of the top eight from the semi-finals to make the final later on Tuesday.

    (10:30-15:35): GB eventing team, team jumping and individual jumping

    Forty years have passed since GB last won team eventing gold, but this is their strongest line-up in generations. Kristina Cook, Piggy French, William Fox-Pitt, Mary King and Zara Phillips have combined to take Britain into silver-medal position going into the final day, with Cook fifth and King sixth in the individual standings.

    Hot off the press is tomorrow's order of play for the tennis and British number one Andy Murray is on Centre Court against Jarkko Nieminen. The 25-year-old will follow Venus Williams and Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada onto the hallowed turf at around 14:00 BST.

    In fact, it promises to be a glorious day on Centre as Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick will play after Murray's encounter, while Laura Robson and Maria Sharapova are set to conclude the day's play. British number one Heather Watson is second on Court One against Russia's Maria Kirilenko at around 14:00.

    British weightlifter Zoe Smith on the social media bullying she and other members of Team GB have experienced: "It is ridiculous that people are making the comments that they are on Twitter. For people to be sending things like they are to Tom Daley is awful. No way has he let anyone down by coming fourth at the Olympics.

    "To be at an Olympics at 18 is a fantastic achievement and I don't think people realise it. I hope my performance today was two fingers up to those who have been abusing me."

    It's 19-19 in the third set in what is turning into another epic game of women's volleyball. You may recall Brazil kept us up until nearly 1am the other night, it seems this is the sport which delivers more hours than any other.

    The US third seeds will have to be on decent form against the 10th seeds, but in Misty May-Treanor they have someone with a wealth of sporting heritage.

    Her dad Bob was a member of the 1968 US Olympic volleyball team and mum Barbera was a national tennis player.

    Her cousin is tennis player Taylor Dent and she is married to LA Dodgers baseball player Matt Treanor.

    Set point to Britain - and it's there!

    Great Britain have their first ever set of Olympic volleyball as they beat Algeria 25-19. A landmark moment.

    He was on a mission to see how many Brits he could watch in one day.

    He said: "It started at the Royal Artillery Barracks with the band playing the theme tune to Indiana Jones and ended on a bus with the world's media heading home in Central London.

    "Tired journalists fill every seat - eyes down on phones and devices catching up with results and no doubt, family members they've not had chance to talk to all day!

    "We travelled by car, bus, train, on foot and on bus again as we took in seven venues, eight sports and watched 55 British athletes in action between 7am and 21:30.

    "I loved seeing Zoe Smith and meeting Rory Warlow's proud dad. The atmosphere for Tom Daley's dive was superb. Bumping into Chris Evans was a big surprise and capturing the Prime Minister on camera not really in the script!

    Former double Olympic champion Greg Louganis on Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield's fourth place in the 10m platform: "This result might be the ramp up they need, it might spur them on in the individual events.

    "They got through the front four and a half which was the key dive for them, they were in there. The mistake in the reverse three and half was so unlike them. Tom Daley kicked short on it, Peter kicked a little bit high. I can't say it was the pressure; that they choked. I'm not in their heads or bodies and those things happen. Maybe it happened so it spurs them on to bigger and better things.

    "Peak performance is mediation in motion. It takes less than three seconds to make a dive and in that time you don't think. You have to trust your training and let it go."

    GB coach Audrey Cooper is prowling the lines as her side take a 20-17 lead in the second set. Cooper played beach volleyball in the 1996 Olympics and is urging her charges on here.

    The women's team from the United States are in action at the moment - and they are about as dominant as their male counterparts.

    They haven't lost a game in the Olympics since Barcelona 20 years ago, and they are making short work of Angola.

    The States lead 41-18 at the break.

    Former British volleyball player Jo Healy: "Algeria are playing quite predictable volleyball at the moment and GB will have learnt from it. GB will also be able to take a lot of positives from that set and now they need to build on it."

    This British team play their volleyball all over the world, from Alemannia Aachen in Germany (Lucy Wicks, Ciara Michel) to the University of Georgia in the States.

    Former British volleyball player Jo Healy: "They have to be aggressive. My first GB coach always said never "tip the ball at the business end of the set" and that has always stuck with me."

    This GB women's team had their funding cut in 2010 but chose to embark on all manner of fundraising events, including a 272-mile bike ride, to help raise the £250,000 needed to get to the Olympics.

    So they are not going to roll over easily - but neither it seems are Algeria as it goes to 20-20 in the first set. Close stuff here.

    Algeria fight back but some top smashing from Savanah Leaf puts GB 16-14 up in the first set at Earls Court. A technical timeout is called, and Algeria's coach does not look a happy man.

    You may have seen yesterday that Great Britain's women hockey captain Kate Walsh broke her jaw - well now there's further proof that hockey is a brutal, brutal sport.

    Spain's men captain Santi Freixa has been ruled out of the rest of the Games after breaking his left arm in the 1-1 draw with Pakistan.

    He sustained a fracture in a collision with Muhammad Irfan towards the end of the first half and played on in spells, at times one-handed, but was clearly in pain and team officials have confirmed the extent of the damage.

    What an absolute hero. Playing hockey with one arm - but he'll be a miss now for Spain, who are in Great Britain's group.

    If there's one man who shouldn't need the help of any of the very helpful volunteers around Wimbledon, it's seven-time champion Roger Federer.

    The Swiss master was in action earlier on, in the men's doubles alongside compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka, and you won't be surprised to hear they came through in three sets against the marvellousy-named Go Soeda and Kei Nishikori of Japan.

    There's a hint of an upset in the air at the Beach Volleyball, where highly-fancied American duo Jacob Gibb and Sean Rosenthal have lost the first set to Polish pair Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel.

    Gibb's middle name is 'Spiker' by the way. Genuinely.

    British tennis player Anne Keothavong has been speaking after her doubles defeat alongside Elen Baltacha.

    She said: "It's a shame that we had to go out so early but it was good fun playing doubles with Bally (Baltacha).

    "I played a great singles match here and the support has been incredible. It was our first Olympics and probably last, so we were just having a moment to ourselves there at the end.

    "Bally and I have known each other since we were 10 years old, we have had a good rivalry over the years and to be on the court together is good."

    BASKETBALL

    It's a story British sports fans will be very used to: plucky Britons come close to pulling off unlikely victory but fall at the final hurdle. GB women walk off court shoulders slumped.

    They came very close, leading with minutes left in the final quarter but a series of errors put paid to that. They know they needed a win here to keep their chances of progressing from the group stages alive but all is not lost, three games left to play. It ends GB 65-73 Canada. What might have been, eh?

    ONE TO WATCH

    It may have escaped your attention but in four years' time in Rio we could be sat here commentating on a Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell or a Luke Donald gold medal.

    Yep - golf is going to be in the Olympics. BBC Sport's golf correspondent Iain Carter has been contemplating the change and asks:

    "At the moment the plan is for 72 hole individual strokeplay tournaments for men and women in separate weeks of the Games. But this may change as organisers consider the possibility of including a team dimension.

    "There are plenty more issues. Will caddies receive medals? Don't they play a similar role to a rowing cox? But what if they are a different nationality to their player?"

    As Britain lead 61-59 against Canada in the basketball: "As well as Great Britain have done there is still a lot of room for improvement, which is good news for them for the rest of the tournament."

    Great Britain's cross-country riders were in action today, and they have put themselves in with a great shout of a team medal after an excellent performance at Greenwich Park.

    Zara Phillips was among the riders after missing the last two Olympics because of injury to her previous horse Toytown.

    "The crowd was amazing all the way along," said Phillips,

    "All these people being here is just incredible. It really makes you want to do better, to go faster.

    "My horse [High Kingdom] is such a dude. He lost a front shoe, so he really stepped up today. The course was very suitable for him."

    Britain are 55-53 down to Canada after three quarters. They've been behind most of the game, but they've stayed within reach throughout. Britain need a strong showing in the final quarter but they are now just 10 minutes from winning their first ever Olympic basketball match. With GB scoring 55% of their shots from the three-throw line, they've got every chance.

    Shin A Lam has ended up being one of the names of the day after her sit-in protest at the fencing.

    She eventually left the piste and returned to fight for a bronze, but was beaten to finish fourth overall.

    She said: "I don't really know how to express the way I feel right now. I've been trying and working to get an Olympic medal for four years, and now I lost it in just one second. It's just impossible to accept.

    "It was a very difficult hour. While I was up there (on the piste) I've been thinking of all the time that I've spent training for the Olympics."

    With Canada leading Britain 49-48 at the Basketball Arena: "GB are coming up with big play after big play but they need to make sure they take care of the ball. They can't give away turnovers."

    Elena Baltacha's bad day has come to an end at Wimbledon.

    She was knocked out of the singles earlier on and she is now out of the doubles tournament as well. Her and Anne Keothavong were soundly beaten 6-3 6-1 by German pair Julia Goerges and Anna Gronefeld.

    There are 5,863 people inside the Basketball Arena for Britain vs Canada, but one of them stands out more than most. According to BBC Sport's Chris Mitchell on 5 Live Olympics Extra, a man is dressed as a Canadian Mountie. That's a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer to you and me.

    You must have used to watch Due South in the 90s? Classic Saturday early evening TV, just before Big Break if I recall.

    BBC commentator Graham Bell: "Ukraine have got a gold medal from nowhere there. We have seen some excellent fencing today, and I think Shin A Lam should be brought out to see the crowd after her torturous hour sat on the piste before the referees made their decision. It has been a very, very entertaining women's epee contest."

    It goes to extra-time but Yana Shemyakina defeats defending Olympic champion Britta Heidemann 9-8 in the epee final.

    The fencing final has gone to extra-time again. We could have more drama.

    BBC Sport analyst Karim Bashir on Shin A Lam's protest: "Priority was with the Korean, which means that she would have won if there had been no score in the extra minute.

    There were two double hits with a second left on the clock. The clock was reset and there was a technical infringement by Shin in that last encounter and so she can't win because she's been given an infringement for a yellow card.

    When they reset and went to fight again Heidemann was allowed to get the touch and get the victory. It was misfortune but technically she couldn't have won after being given a yellow card."

    An emotional evening for Shin A Lam comes to an end as she is beaten in the bronze medal match of the women's individual epee by China's Sun Yujie. After all that sitting about, it's fourth place for the Korean.

    Former Great Britain hockey player Mel Clewlow on BBC Radio 5 live: "It was absolutely brilliant, and both teams were trying to work each other out. In the second half, the men blew Argentina away. Realistically, they'll be looking to win their next two games, and the pivotal game will be against Spain, as it could very well decide who will reach the semi-finals."

    GOLD MEDAL- Kim Un Guk, PKR (Men's 62kg weightlifting)

    Kim Un Guk has won gold for North Korea in the men's 62kg weightlifting competition at ExCeL with a world record of 327kg.

    It's all over at the Hockey, where Great Britain have beaten Argentina 4-1. A very good start to life in Group A for the Brits, who face South Africa next.

    "She looks astonished at what she has done, but Ruta, you are the Olympic champion. The 100m breaststroke lends itself to youngsters as you just have to get the technical side of the stroke to perfection, and there are less tactics. She didn't buckle under the pressure in the heats, and in the final, she delivered. She didn't fold against Rebecca Soni, and for a 15-year-old, that is mightily impressive."

    Ruta Meilutyte, a 15-year-old Lithuanian holds off Rebecca Soni to win gold in the 100 metre breaststroke. Bronze went to Japan's Satomi Suzuki.

    The buzzer sounds for the end of the first quarter of Britain vs Canada with the home-side down 19-15. Britain don't have too much to worry about just yet, it's still anyone's game.

    Pedro Ibarra rattles in a penalty corner for Argentina to make it 4-1 to Great Britain, who are looking good here. Ranked four in the world, the men and women of Great Britain are both tipped to challenge for a medal in the coming days.

    That bronze medal in the gymnastics means that 1% of the whole of Team GB have now won a medal.

    An update from BBC reporter Jason Mohammad, who is seeing how many Brits he can watch in a day at the Olympics.

    The answer is a lot.

    He says: "So what a phenomenal atmosphere at the weightlifting. Got to Fencing but slightly gutted to miss Corinna Lawrence as huge crowds heading to judo slowed us down.

    However, having sped to the Olympic Park - legally I might add - I'm now up to 19! How, I hear you cry? Well, Daley and Waterfield followed Warlow, Smith, Drinkhall - then 14 Team GB Handball players - they were beaten by Russia, but played well and raised the roof when scoring a great goal into the bottom corner.

    So I've taken in Shooting, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Fencing, Diving and Handball - all over five venues, two cars, one bus, one DLR and still Water Polo, Hockey, Basketball to go!"

    BASKETBALL

    Over in the marshmallow of a basketball arena, Great Britain's women are in action against Canada. Canada have a minute 9-8 lead in the first quarter.

    Tim from Marlow texts: "I was quite warming to Ryan Lochte - but it has to be said that there is something deeply disturbing about a man who owns 130 pairs of shoes. Surely about four pairs are plenty - one for best, one loafing about in, a pair of golf shoes and some nice walking boots should be plenty for any chap!"

    Arjan from Sunderland texts: "Just had tea, left my phone and the live text says fourth, come back, we end up with the bronze in the gymnastics, the GYMNASTICS! And to think we temporarily had silver. Happy happy happy! C'mon Team GB!"

    HOCKEY

    Olympic gold medal winner Sean Kerly on BBC Three: "What a great finish to that move from Dan Fox to make it 3-0. How about that from a full-back? The goal came from the breakaway, and what they have worked on is getting people ahead of the ball. That spread the defence, and Dan Fox emerged to score."

    HOCKEY

    Dan Fox makes it 3-0 to Great Britain, before Richard Smith buries a penalty corner and possibly buries Argentina in this one. 4-0 now to the hosts.

    GOLD MEDAL- Matt Grevers, USA (Men's 100m backstroke)

    Matt Grevers of the United States takes gold in the men's 100m backstroke.

    BOXING

    There's more discord in the boxing as well, where Indian light-heavyweight Sumit Sangwan was unlucky to lose 15-14 to Brazilian Yamaguchi Falcao Florentino, leading to his team to lodge an official protest.

    FENCING

    We have movement! Shin A Lam is on her feet and ushered away from the piste. She is in tears, in absolute bits. There is a huge round of applause from the crowd as well.

    I don't think we will have heard the end of this.

    WATER POLO

    Disappointment in the pool for Great Britain's women, who were beaten 7-6 by Russia. Evgeniya Ivanova scored the winning goal, but let's hope there's no protests/disputes/swim-ins about that one. Take it on the chin and move on...

    GOLD MEDAL- Missy Franklin, USA (Women's 100m backstroke)

    17-year-old Missy Franklin takes gold after a superb second 50m, with Britain's Gemma Spofforth in fifth.

    Goal time! Captain Barry Middleton smashes in a second through the keeper's legs to put Britain 2-0 up over Argentina.

    FENCING

    It's thirsty work, protesting. Fencer Shin A Lam, who is an hour in to her sit-down protest against her defeat to Germany's Britta Heidermann in the epee semi-final, has been handed a bottle of water from the organisers.

    Meanwhile, officials, organisers and the South Korean team are in chaos around her trying to resolve the situation. To be honest, Shim A Lam looks pretty comfortable, sat down on the piste (competition area), with her elbows on her knees. I wonder what she's thinking?

    GYMNASTICS

    The bronze medal winning British men's artistic gymnastics team have been talking to the BBC:

    Daniel Purvis: "If someone said before the competition we'd get a bronze I wouldn't believe them, just to get a bronze is a dream come true. Getting a bronze is unbelievable."

    Max Whitlock: "Everyone has done an amazing job, everyone worked so hard for this. To do this in a home games is incredible."

    Louis Smith: "We'd have been happy with anything, to get a medal is unbelievable. It has been such a journey for us to get here. I would like to say a big thanks to our reserves, they have pushed us on and we did them proud."

    Kristian Thomas: "It was fantastic, and to do it in front of a the home crowd here in London… It is a once in a lifetime experience and we've made most of it. I'd like to give full credit to our team, coaches and everyone back home."

    GOLD MEDAL- Yannick Agnel, FRA (Men's 200m freestyle)

    Frenchman Yannick Agnel has won gold in the men's 200 metre freestyle, with Ryan Lochte out of the medals in fourth.

    The fencer is still sat there, cheesed off, but there appears to be some sort of conference between officials and the Korean coaches. It may sound farcical to you, but you try moving an angry woman holding a sword...

    BBC Sport analyst Karim Bashir on Shin A Lam's appeal against her women's individual epee semi-final defeat to Britta Heidemann: "First up it is official the written appeal has gone in. There's a call to have a press conference right now but my understanding is that the international federation will not be holding a press conference during the time because it is unfair on the athletes involved.

    "They are preparing a written statement but they won't give any detail on who will be involved in making that decision and how they will come to it. This is not going to be resolved in the next five minutes. It will take some time."

    FENCING

    But just as you've caught your breath from the goings on in the North Greenwich Arena, it seems it's all kicking off at the ExCel in the women's epee fencing semi-final.

    South Korean fencer Shin A Lam was beaten by Germany's Britta Heidermann an hour ago but is refusing to move from the competition area. She's sitting down, dejected, towel around her shoulders and is refusing to move. It's been a hour. South Korea are said to be submitting an appeal against the defeat.

    HOCKEY

    Now then, in the blitz of drama from our male gymnasts, I've slightly taken my eye off the ball live-sport wise. And during an Olympics when there can be 30-odd events going on at once that is frankly idiotic.

    At the Riverbank Arena, for example, Great Britain lead Argentina 1-0 at half-time of the men's hockey.

    I don't know who will be more excited about today's events, Matt Baker or our own Ollie Williams.

    Williams was in his seat a solid three hours before the gymnastics even started. He loves it.

    BBC commentator Matt Baker as the British artistic gymnastics team collect their bronze medals: "All those hours of work that went in to that performance and they kept their composure, they did what was required. No-one can take those bronze medal aways from these boys."

    "Confused, stunned, elated. And that's the crowd, let alone the British gymnasts. How can you, or should you, feel when you win an unthinkable Olympic silver medal for all of 10 minutes and then find yourself with bronze?

    Proud, should be the answer. This is a monumental achievement for Britain, regardless of Japan's successful appeal and elevation above GB to second place. Replays suggest the Japanese appeal had merit.

    Britain's gymnasts come from a nation that prefers to talk about golds rather than the 'minor' medals, but in the world of elite gymnastics, this bronze is an impressive statement of intent and demonstration of how far this team has come. With Louis Smith set to compete for pommel horse gold, there may yet be more - and better - to come in the week to follow."
