Olympics water polo: Great Britain's women exit from last eight
Great Britain's women suffered an agonising water polo quarter-finals defeat, losing 9-7 to Spain.
A packed crowd urged on Team GB in the purpose-built water polo arena, but a win for the home side was not to be.
Pre-tournament favourites Australia suffered an almighty scare, tying 16-16 with China. It took a fifth penalty throw for the Aussies to progress.
The United States will face Australia in the last four having beaten Italy 9-6 while Hungary surprised Russia 11-10.
Francesca Painter-Snell's hat-trick for Britain will provide encouragement for followers of the hosts after these Games.
GB were just a goal behind Spain entering into the last 30 seconds of the fourth period, but a Maica Garcia strike from the centre ended the contest.
