Olympics fencing: Jiyeon Kim of South Korea wins sabre gold

Jiyeon Kim of South Korea won the women's individual sabre Olympic gold after defeating Russia's Sofya Velikaya 15-9 at the ExCel.

Kim took an early lead and then maintained it to win her country's first women's fencing gold medal.

Ukraine's Olga Kharlan won bronze, beating Mariel Zagunis of the United States 15-10.

Earlier, Great Britain's Louise Bond-Williams and Sophie Williams both failed to progress beyond the last 32.

Kim, seeded fifth, came from seven points behind to defeat Zagunis, Olympic champion in 2004 and and 2008, 15-13 in the semi-final.

The 24-year-old left-hander's win brought the individual fencing competition at London 2012 to a close ahead of the team events, which start on Thursday.
