Here's the Team GB gender split visualised, breaking down the ratio of men to women in a selection of sports to be contested at London 2012.
Sophie Troiano is one of the six female fencers representing Team GB at London 2012, alongside four men.
Equestrian sport allows men and women to compete in the same events. Here is the British eventing team, featuring (left-right) Tina Cook, William Fox-Pitt, Nicola Wilson, Mary King and Zara Phillips.
Two sports at the Games are limited to female competitors only: synchronised swimming (pictured here are the British team at May's European Championships) and rhythmic gymnastics.
For the first time there is gender equality in track cycling events at the Olympics with London 2012 offering five gold medals for both men and women. GB's Laura Trott, above, is the favourite to deliver both women's team pursuit and omnium gold.
Rowing still offers more events for men at the Olympics than for women (eight and six respectively), and the British team reflects this, with 28 men and 19 women selected.
For the first time, the US Olympic team contains more women than men. However, the Americans failed to qualify in both men's hockey (unlike GB, for whom Iain Lewers, above, plays) and men's football.
