As it happened

  1. 1844:

Join me tomorrow for more live text commentary from 1600 BST. Live coverage begins on BBC Two and the BBC Sport website from 1700.

  2. 1836:

That's all folks. As heptathlete Jessica Ennis becomes double British champion in the high jump and 100m hurdles, so too does Eden Francis in the shot put and discus. Pole vaulter Steve Lewis, long jumper Greg Rutherford, hurdler Tiffany Porter, reigning Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu and sprinter Adam Gemili are just some of the athletes we can expect to see when the Olympic athletics competition kicks off in August.

  3. 1832:

So the race is on for Chambers, who has until July 1 to get that magic Olympic 'A' standard of 10.18s.

  4. 1829:

Dwain Chambers was visibly relieved to win a competitive 100m final: "First of all, I want to apologise for swearing at the end of the race," he said on BBC Two. "I got a little carried away.

"I was so scared because my heat in the semi-final didn't go well. I had pressure with all the youngsters like Adam coming through, but I relied on my experience and it got my through. I knew Adam was going to be quick and I wanted to get a start and stay ahead.

"I still need to get the qualifying time and I have a chance to get it at the Europeans in Helsinki next week, so that is the next step. The pressure of trials is the hardest part and I am glad it's over. Now I can concentrate on getting the time."

  5. 1826:

18-year-old Adam Gemili looked as happy as anybody with his second-place finish in the 100m - and he was excited about the possibility of competing at the Games. "I can't believe it, I don't know what to say," he said on BBC Two. "Now I have run the standard and finish in the top two, I will speak to my coach about what to do next."

  6. 1823:
    CHAMPAGNE MOMENT

Chambers wins the 100m final with his fastest race of the season in 10.25s. But it is young gun Adam Gemili who will be lining up at the London Olympic Stadium with his second place finish (10.29s). James Dasaolu was third in 10.31.

  7. 1819:
DWAIN CHAMBERS RETAINS BRITISH 100M TITLE
  8.
Colin Jackson , BBC Sport athletics pundit

"This will be an incredible 100m final. It's out with the old guard and in with the new. It's a really open race."

  9. 1815:
    ANDREW BADDELEY WINS 1500M FINAL

Baddeley crosses the line first in 3:47.97 ahead of Ross Murray in 3:48.20. Baddeley even throws in Mo Farah's cheeky Mo-bot dance as he finishes. Not sure why. Men's 100m final up next.

  10.
    GET INVOLVED

Ashley Whitmore "Would love to see Bradstock at London 2012. Deserves it for throwing javelin so far at age of 50 and being so ‪patriotic."

Dom Breslin on Twitter: "Am I the only Brit worried about the way the trials are going? Slow times, injuries and withdrawals. Need to up it guys."

  11. 1810:

A few results from earlier in the day. Lee Doran took the men's javelin title with 79.72m. 50-year-old Roald Bradstock, wearing the outrageous tracksuit he wore as part of Britain's 1984 Olympic squad, came second with a season's best of 72.78m - not enough to make it to London.

  12. 1805:

Jessica Ennis underlined her stunning form with an impressive victory in the 100m hurdles, and she told BBC Two: "It's great to come here and do well - it's a big weekend for British athletes. The crowd have been brilliant, it's a packed stadium and they have really got behind us. It was nice to know I had the qualification, so I could come here and sharpen up on the individual events.

  13. 1759:

Hurdler Tiffany Porter will be disappointed in losing to a multi-eventer but when that multi-eventer is the irrepressible Jessica Ennis, surely she can be forgiven? Ennis's time of 12.92 was inside the Olympic 'A' standard proving just how strong her hurdling is.

  14.
Colin Jackson , BBC Sport athletics pundit

"That was a great performance from Jessica Ennis. She bided her time, gathering pace and relied on her good technique to haul her through. What a wonderful weekend she has had."

  15. 1754:
    CHAMPAGNE MOMENT

Heptathlete star Jessica Ennis has already won the high jump, and now adds the 100m hurdles title to her growing repertoire, ahead of Tiffany Porter.

  16. 1752:

One to watch coming up as Jessica Ennis goes up against Tiffany Porter in the women's 100m hurdles final now. Live on BBC Two and at the top of this page, don't forget. Who's your money on? Let me know via Twitter using #bbcathletics or text 81111 (please leave your name). Here we go.

  17. 1750:

Christine Ohuruogo says she was using the Team GB trials as preparation for the Olympics, with the races so close together. "This championship is about putting together the Olympic programme," she told BBC Two. "I am not delighted with the time but it was okay. I have had a hard week, I have been training hard so I was ready to deal with the Olympic programme. I am going to rest for a couple of days now and then get ready for London 2012."

  18. 1747:

Ohuruogu, reigning Olympic 400m champion, will defend her title in London as she books her place in the British team. Not the best time (51.89s), but Ohuruogu finished strongly way ahead of the field.

  19. 1746:
    CHRISTINE OHURUOGU WINS 400M FINAL
  20.
    Denise Lewis , BBC Sport

Jodie Williams, who was wearing a lot of strapping, pulled up 50m from the finish, and Lewis told BBC Two that she should not have been competing: "Athletes are defined by the decisions they make and if they are not fit to be here, they shouldn't be here."

  21. 1741:
    Bad news for a Brit

Sprinting starlet Jodie Williams pulls up after about 50m in the women's 100m final and collapses to the track in tears. Meanwhile, after a strong start from Montell Douglas, Ashleigh Nelson earns her best result as a senior to become British champion in 11.50 seconds.

  22. 1735:
    ASHLEIGH NELSON WINS 100M FINAL
  23.
Colin Jackson , BBC Sport athletics pundit

"Marilyn is a very experienced runner and should have used her experience and reputation to sit in the middle of the field and psyche out her opponents. It's a tough one for the selectors now."

  24. 1730:
    Shock result

Lynsey Sharp wins the women's 800m final in 2:01.72. Marilyn Okoro, who held the 'A' standard and needed just a top two finish to secure her place in London, stormed ahead from the gun, leading the field until the final 200m. But the pace was too much to maintain as Jemma Simpson and Sharp ran her down in the back straight. British selectors have a job on their hands, there.

  25. 1725:

Dai Greene and Jack Green both train together at Bath, and the two 400m hurdlers told BBC Two they expect to improve their times even further heading into the Olympics. "It is a nice feeling to qualify," said Green. "It is what I came here today for. I wanted to run quicker but getting to the Olympics is the main thing." Meanwhile, Greene added: "It is great that the UK has so many good hurdlers and people like Jack keep pushing me in training. I feel like I am getting back to where I want to be and I will hopefully have a couple more races before the Olympics."

  26.
Tom Fordyce , Chief sports writer, BBC Sport

On Twitter: Dramatic 400m hurdles - @DaiGreene wins in 49.47 secs from Jack Green and Nathan Woodward. Rhys Williams falls in home straight

  27. 1719:
DAI GREENE WINS 400M HURDLES FINAL

Blistering start from Jack Green but it was world champion Dai Greene who led coming into the final bend to finish strongly in 49.47. Both should have done enough to book their places in London this summer.

  28. 1717:

Hammer thrower Sophie Hitchon was understandably delighted with her selection for London 2012. "It is great," she said on BBC Two. "If somebody had told me that when I was 20 I would be selected for the Olympic team, I would be happy with that. We have got the Europeans next week, so that is the focus next, but then it is the Olympics. Hopefully it all goes smoothly."

  29. 1712:

Did you enjoy those 100m semi-final heats? The man everyone is talking about, Adam Gemili, goes through to the final as fastest qualifier. That will set him against British athletics most other talked about man, Dwain Chambers. Throw in 'A' standard holder James Dasaolu, Mark Lewis-Francis and Simeon Williamson and we're set for an exciting final at 18:17.

  30.
    Denise Lewis , BBC Sport

"Adam Gemili is the man to beat in the 100m now. He was relatively unknown before, but he has taken the event by the scruff of the neck and he has said to the other guys, 'catch me if you can'."

  31. 1707:
JAMES DASAOLU WINS 100m SEMI-FINAL HEAT

Dasaolu looked a class apart. He was about two strides ahead by 60m before easing over the line in 10.30s. Mark Lewis-Francis came through late on in lane seven to finish second.

  32.

Joe on Twitter: "Adam Gemili is quick and he's only 18, great end to the race."

Chris Brown on Twitter: "Brilliant opener to the ‪#AvivaOlympicTrials‬ on ‪#BBCAthletics‬, mixing this year's hopefuls with champions of the past!"

  33.
Tom Fordyce , Chief sports writer, BBC Sport

On Twitter: Poor start from Dwain, had to work to come through in 10.39 secs from Simeon Williamson and Christian Malcolm. Final at 1817 BST

  34. 1700:
SIMEON WILLIAMSON WINS 100m SEMI-FINAL HEAT

Powerful run by Williamson to edge the second 100m semi-final in 10.29 seconds, just ahead of Dwain Chambers who records the same time. Both will be in the final with Adam Gemili.

  35. 1658:

Dwain Chambers up next. He is reigning British 100m champion but what has he got today? I hope you're watching live on BBC Two.

  36. 1652:
ADAM GEMILI WINS 100m SEMI-FINAL HEAT

Former Chelsea football trainee Gemili takes his semi-final heat in 10.20 ahead of Harry Aikines-Aryeetey in second.

  37.
    BBC Sport's Denise Lewis

"There will be tears today because this is the most fiercely-contested Olympic trials I can ever remember. There will be plenty of smiles too, however, because people's lives will change forever if they are selected in the Team GB squad for London 2012."

  38. 1651:

Controversial sprinter Dwain Chambers comfortably won his 100m heat yesterday, whilst man-of-the-moment 18-year-old Adam Gemili also made it through to today's semi-final. Both are coming up live in the coming minutes in the semi-final heats. Final at 18:17, that'll be one to watch.

  39.
Tom Fordyce , Chief sports writer, BBC Sport

On Twitter: Luke Gunn wins men's steeplechase for fourth title. Has Olympic 'B' standard, but will he get selected off that? Nervous times...

  42. 1627:
    WINNER

Sophie Hitchon is proving to be a bit of a lone ranger in British women's hammer throwing. After extending her own British record back in April to 71.61m and exceed the Olympic 'A' standard, the 20-year-old has just won her event today (69.79m) so should have secured selection for London 2012.

  43.
Tom Fordyce , Chief sports writer, BBC Sport

On Twitter: Jennis wins her 100m hurdles heat in 13.01 secs. Tiffany Porter won hers in 13.15. Jennis chat: "Not too bad - bit tentative at start..."

    BBC COVERAGE

A bit later we'll have some live footage for you to watch. Tune in to BBC Two and the BBC Sport website from 16:45. In the mean time, get involved and send me your thoughts using #bbcathletics on Twitter. Don't leave me hanging, will you?

  45. 1613:
    WINNER

Here's a fact for you. Eden Francis, who won the shot put earlier today with 16.13m, is bidding to become the first woman to represent Britain in the shot and the discus at an Olympics since 1984. Her win today and the fact that she's the only one to have thrown the Olympic 'B' standard is making that increasingly likely. She'll be in the discus later at 17:10.

  46. 1607:

We've had a few results in already. British heptathlete record holder Jessica Ennis set a season's best in the high jump to win with 1.89m, before failing three attempts at 1.92m. Ennis was the stand-out performer in what is a weak event for Britain, with noone having managed to jump the 'A' or 'B' qualification standard.

  47.
Tom Fordyce , Chief sports writer, BBC Sport

On Twitter: Abi Oyepitan most impressive qualifier from women's 100m semis, 11.37 secs. Wind not too bad at the mo - blustery earlier, now calming

Do help me out today, won't you? Who do you think has London 2012 selection in the bag? Will we see any high-profile athletes miss the cut this weekend? Get involved on Twitter using #bbcathletics and send texts to 81111, remembering to include your name.

  49. 1559:

It will be make or break for many of the athletes competing this weekend. If we look at it in simple terms, an athlete needs to have attain the UK Athletics 'A' qualification time or mark in addition to a top two finish at the Trials. But realistically, with so many competitors raising their games and achieving those 'A' standards, working out the winners and losers in some events will be far more complicated. Allow chief sports writer Tom Fordyce to explain.

  50. 1555:

But you still have a reigning Olympic and reigning world champ, as I mentioned earlier, to look forward to. Last year's World 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene will look to book his place in London at 17:13 BST, whilst 2008 Olympic 400m gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu contests her final at 17:43. Then, British athletics' golden girl Jessica Ennis lines up for the 100m hurdles at 17:54.

  51. 1550:

Then 5,000m world champion Mo Farah pulled out of the 1500m final. "I need to rest as much as possible and save my legs to defend my European title next week..!!" he explained on his Twitter. Disappointing for those that have grown to love his 'Mo-bot' dance at the end of every race.

  52. 1548:

Phillips Idowu announced yesterday he wouldn't be competing in today's triple jump competition due to injury. But hopefully the likes of hip-hop stars Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj can put a smile back on the Londoner's face at the BBC Radio 1 Hackney Weekend Festival, which Idowu seems to have tickets for today.

  53. 1545:

What a day of athletics we have coming up. It's day two of the British Olympic Trials where Birmingham's Alexander Stadium will play host to a reigning Olympic champion, a reigning world champion and countless London 2012 medal contenders. Quite a lot has happened already, so let me update you.
