Plymouth judo legend Alan Kimber wins 2013 BBC South-West Unsung Hero award

Plymouth Judo Club chairman Alan Kimber has spent more than 50 years involved in the sport in the south west.

"Judo gets in the blood," said Kimber, who narrowly missed out on selection for the Olympics in his youth.

BBC Spotlight's John Ayres met Kimber, who has helped thousands of youngsters learn the sport, to find out more about his journey.

Also shortlisted for the award in the south west were:

  • Dougie Thompson , chairman of Millway Rise Football Club in Axminster
  • Rob Phillips and Chris Hewitt , coaches at Portreath Surf Lifesaving Club
  • Sharron Robbie , chairman of Plymouth Netball League
  • Michael Young , founder and secretary of Penryn Athletic Football Club
