Lennox Lewis silences his doubters and his opponent Hasim Rahman with a knock-out right hook in the fourth round of their heavyweight title rematch in Las Vegas. A hugely lucrative showdown with Mike Tyson could now be on the cards for next year.
 
 
England bounce back from losing out on the Grand Slam in Dublin by beating Romania by a record 134-0 and achieving a southern hemisphere double over South Africa and Australia, against whom Jonny Wilkinson kicked all points for Clive Woodward’s men.

The Arizona Diamondbacks clinch baseball’s World Series with victory in the seventh and final game against the New York Yankees. Most of the US were behind the mighty Yankees in the wake of the 11 September attacks, but Arizona caused an upset.
 
 
Richard Burns becomes the first Englishman to win the World Rally title. The Subaru driver emerges from a pack of four possible champions in the season-ending Rally of Britain, which is marred when 13 spectators are hurt in a crash on the second day.
 
 
An Ian Hart goal helps the Republic of Ireland reach the 2002 World Cup. They qualify after beating Iran 2-1 on aggregate in a two-leg play-off. There is more good news for football when the PFA calls off a threatened strike over the allocation of television money.
