Group 4 news

The Scots are looking towards the World Cup with some confidence and Australian coach Shaun McRae hoping to increase the profile of the game north of the border. His squad is a mixture of ability and experience and may just achieve that aim.

Huddersfield hooker Danny Russell will captain Scotland, and a capable set of forwards are gathered around him in the shape Castleford pair Adrian Vowels and Darren Shaw. They are assisted by giant second row Wayne McDonald, who will surprise many with his pace in midfield and his penchant for scoring tries.

Scotland could surprise many providing they can attain parity in their group matches. Pacy wings Danny Arnold and Matt Daylight could show their try scoring abilities down the touchlines. Inside back Graham MacKay is a player who fears no one and is sure to relish any confrontation coming his way.

Coach McRae is sure to bemoan the loss of former Aussie Test stars Tim Brasher and Paul McGregor, both sidelined by shoulder injuries. As a coach who has guided St Helens to two Silk Cut Challenge Cup winning finals and a Superleague Championship, he will not lack confidence to raise the ability and morale of any side. A team capable of upsetting Group favourites Ireland and topping the table.
