The modern racing cycle is a far cry from the cycles ridden by children, commuters and even from mountain, leisure and touring bikes.
These are the Formula One cars of the bike world so each component is made as light as possible, without compromising on key factors such as strength and aerodynamics.
Despite the constant advances in technology and materials the basic principles remain the same.

Each machine costs a four-figure sum, perhaps up to £5,000 or more. With spare machines for nine riders, kitting out a professional road team is not cheap.
