Stage 17

This year's five mountain top finishes are now behind the riders, but this stage still has three serious climbs and potential to upset the general classification.

It is good to see a stage like this in the race too - often a mountain stage that ends in a descent features a finish even more spectacular than a climb, such as Roberto Heras' spectacular crash at Morzine two years ago.

  • 31.5km: Cormet de Roselend first category climb
  • 70km: Col des Saisies first category climb
  • 96.5km: Col des Aravis second category climb
  • 121.5km: Col de la Colombiere first category climb

Previously: In 1994 The Russian Piotr Ugroumov win in Cluses.

Don't miss: Cluses is an industrial town, proving that the Alps are not as remote as you might think. It is particularly famed for watch and clock manufacture.

Food and drink: The Alps' only vineyards, of Savoie, are in this area, producing sharp white wines with lots of flavour.
