I think Lewis has always shown a great deal of mental strength right the way through his professional career. He has a great ability to prepare himself and get ready for the big occasion.
The moments when he’s been caught short were unquestionably when he underestimated his opponent. In 2001 in Johannesburg against Hasim Rahman, his preparations were, frankly, quite appalling and I don’t think mentally he was at the races.
When he came back for his second fight against Rahman, he obliterated him in four rounds and clearly had got himself up for the cause.
In big fights in the past he’s been right there mentally - bouts like the Razor Ruddock fight, the clash with Andrew Golota in Atlantic City and when he destroyed Tommy Morrison with a virtuoso performance. I think he’s a very analytical fighter and mentally he is very strong.
