As it happened

  1. 1944:

Righto, that's me for the day - see you tomorrow, and let's hope it's windy...

  2.

Jason Sobel on Twitter: "Adam Scott is playing so well the other guys can't touch him with a 10-foot pole. Coincidentally, he is also putting with a 10-foot pole."

  3.
    Ken Brown, BBC Sport

"There's nothing quite like a home tournament, the crowd gives you great backing and that can help you. Success breeds success. If Graeme McDowell can drive well and cope with the bunkers, he'll have a really good chance, but you've got to be in complete control of your game if you are chasing."

  4.

BBC Sport's Andrew Cotter: "Wayne Grady says that Adam Scott has won in Australia in 'wind that blows dogs off chains'. Australian for 'he can cope with the wind'."

  5.

Graeme McDowell after a round of 67 left him seven under: "That was a good round. The first six or seven holes I sensed the tournament slipping away. I didn't get out of the blocks fast enough and the first six or seven holes are difficult. I was struggling, had to dig deep, show patience and I'm very proud with the way I played.

"I hit a lot of quality golf shots form 14 and hopefully put myself back in contention. It's nice to be in the final group at the Open, it's what I've always dreamed of."

  6.
    Ken Brown, BBC Sport

"Brandt Snedeker had a lovely finish. When you get under pressure you have to slow down a fashion and what a nice way to finish in front of a a packed grandstand."

  7.
    Wayne Grady, BBC Sport

"Tiger Woods has got a good chance, but the way Adam Scott is playing Tiger will have to go out and take it from him. Even though Tiger has won three times this year there are still some doubts about his game."

  8.

Tiger Woods, three-time Open champion: "They were tough pins today on slopes and on top of mounds, I just found it a little more difficult for some reason. I had a pretty poor start but I said I would take even par as I came round the turn. I have to go out there and post the best score I can. Whatever it is it is in terms of conditions I have to go out there and execute my game-plan."

  9. 1924:

Open leader Adam Scott on BBC Two: "I'm feeling great, it was good solid day and I did what I needed to do. I've never played in the final pairing at a major and was really excited.

"With every player it's a team effort and Steve Williams has been great, we are working well together and he's a great motivator.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow, I'm in a great position and am hopefully a good round of golf will make it hard for the other guys. It's almost impossibe not to think about playing tomorrow but I'll do everything I normally do."

  10.
    Wayne Grady, BBC Sport

"Adam Scott was quite composed. He played well, didn't do much early, the first six holes were playing difficult, but then he made some birdies and Brandt Snedeker led to his own downfall with some poor play, but Scott took it by the scruff of the neck and came out the leader.

"Steve Williams is a great person to have on the bag and Scott's making putts with the long putter, he's at the age where he needs to strike. You can hit as many good shots as you like but if you can't putt, you start to wonder whether it will happen for you."

  11. 1920:

Adam Scott is bidding to become the fourth Australian winner of the Open, after Greg Norman (1993, 1986), Ian Baker-Finch (1991) and Peter Thomson (1958, '56, '55, '54). Flying the flag for the United Kingdom and Ireland is Graeme McDowell, who is four shots back, while other home players are rather thin on the ground. Tiger lurking, five off the lead, and there are five other major winners in the top 10 - Zach Johnson, Els, Bubba Watson, Oosthuizen and Calcavecchia. It will be well worth watching.

  12.
    Peter Alliss, BBC Sport

"That is more like it! A three-four-three finish for Snedeker and that is pretty hot."

  13.

Andrew Coltart on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Just desserts for Snedeker for hanging in there through a tough day and the pressure will be back on the other players now."

  14. 1910:
    BIRDIE

Snedeker has holed a crackerjack at the last, the overnight leader finishing three-four-three for a round of 73 and seven under overall, he'll be out in the penultimate group with Tiger tomorrow. Scott very nearly makes his but he's in with a 68 to lead by four heading into the final day - it will be Scott and McDowell playing last on Sunday and if the wind gets up, we could be in for a ripsnorter.

  15. 1907:

Scott and Snedeker on in two at 18, no dramas at all. They make their way to the dancefloor, rich applause, contrasting fortunes - Snedeker four over for the day, Scott two under, the Aussie's to lose it seems...

  16. 1904:
    BOGEY

Olesen makes a bogey at the last but all in all it was a fine round from the 22-year-old Dane, including a couple of Seve-esque up-and-downs. He's four under and tied for eighth.

  17. 1903:

They've gone round in about three hours 50 today, which by modern standards is supersonic. Olesen is able to putt, his ball jumped a few feet from the clubhouse wall, and on he rolls it. Woods with a putt for a 69... once again, he hasn't hit it hard enough, and he's in for a 70 and six under overall. Frustration writ large across his face, he's well aware he might have left himself too much to do on the final day...

  18. 1858:

Hearty applause for Woods and Olesen as they make their way to the 18th green and Woods twirls his cap and repays them with a sheepish smile. Scott and Snedeker safely away on 18...

  19.
    Peter Alliss, BBC Sport

"That shot from Adam Scott from the bunker on the 17th green would rank as the best shot of the day, to put it within the 14 inches under the circumstances was superb."

  20. 1856:

Snedeker and Scott with very neat up-and-downs on 17 and on they march to the 18th tee. Olesen overcooks his approach at 18, his ball bouncing back off the clubhouse. Woods safely on in two.

  21.
Andrew Coltart, BBC Radio 5 live

Former Ryder Cup player after Paul Lawrie's triple-bogey finish: "He must be feeling dreadful - embarrassed - his knees will be shaking. To do it out here on the 18th at St Annes, it's not a nice place."

  22. 1855:

Snedeker splashes out of the sand - literally, there was standing water - and that's a doozy, his ball finishing a few feet from the cup. Scott in a kidney-shaped trap next door and that's even better, that's within a foot.

  23. 1851:

Snedeker finds sand with his approach at 17, and I think Scott's done the same - the Iceman melteth?

  24.
    Peter Alliss, BBC Sport

"Paul Lawrie has just lost concentration and focus, something has gone very amiss out there for him."

  25. 1849:
    TRIPLE BOGEY

Scotland's Paul Lawrie finishes with a rather sad triple-bogey seven, including a missed two-foot putt. Ugly, a round of 76 and two over overall. Kuchar in with a 72, he's two under par.

  26.
    Wayne Grady, BBC Sport

"We haven't seen too many approaches up to the 17th better than that one from Thorbjorn Olesen today. In fact we have not seen too many better than that all week. I know exactly what he will be thinking, he will be hoping to beat Tiger Woods in the first time he has played against the great man and he has a chance here."

  27.
    Peter Alliss, BBC Sport

"Adam Scott has Tiger Woods's swing from five years ago, he has his Tiger's former caddie in Steve Williams and he has his ex-coach in Butch Harmon as well. He has nicked the whole lot!"

  28. 1848:
    BIRDIE

The big difference between the old Tiger and the new Tiger is his putting and here he is leaving a long one on 17 short again. Olesen with a 10-footer for birdie and he's made that disappear to join Tiger on five under par. Woods pours in that four-footer.

  29. 1844:

Wind-wise, we're expecting a southwesterly tomorrow, strengthening progressively throughout the afternoon - Lytham, which has been on its back all week having its tummy tickled, might suddenly turn nasty. Snedeker pings his drive down the middle on 17 as we cut to Paul Lawrie on 18, third shot into the green and he's got a long and winding one for par.

  30.

Former professional Mark Roe on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"This has been one of the most beautiful afternoons I can remember out on the Links, but I have a feeling tomorrow it may just bite back."

  31. 1840:
    BIRDIE

McDowell in with a par at the last, a round of 67 and the clubhouse lead on seven under par. Just missed out at the US Open, but he might have another chance tomorrow. He could do with Scott letting it slip this evening but the Aussie has just made another par on 16 to stay 11 under. Rare birdie for Snedeker, he's not out of this yet despite a deflating day...

  32. 1835:

McDowell playing some sweet golf down the stretch and here he is arrowing his approach into the middle on 18. Olesen's birdie attempt misses left on 16, the Dane remains four under.

  33. 1833:

Snedeker with a fine saver on 15, that should settle the old bones, although it's a bit late now. Nineteen years since an Aussie won the Claret Jug, Greg Norman at Sandwich, but it's looking like Adam Scott's year - at the moment. Here's Tiger with his birdie effort on 16 but they don't go in like they used to, this one bending early and finishing four feet wide.

  34.

Daniel Hand on Twitter: "If the wind blows tomorrow Graeme McDowell will be licking his lips and getting ready to kiss the Claret Jug."

  35. 1829:

Ernie with this sneaky putt downhill on 18... looks in all the way but nips right at the last minute and horseshoes out. But that's a round of 68 for five under and six off the lead. Scott misses his birdie putt on 15, taps in to stay 11 under.

  36. 1825:
    BIRDIE

Woods for par on 15... bit of break where he saw none, he's now five off the lead. Scott from some scrubby stuff but it doesn't put him off, into the guts of the 15th green. Woods with iron again off the 16th tee, and again it's down the middle. Els all over the pin on 18, leaves himself a snaky one coming downhill. BIRDIE MCDOWELL! Sinking them from all parts, this time for birdie on 17, he moves to seven under and outright second.

  37. 1821:

McDowell on the par-four 17th, three wood, and he pings it down the middle. Big grin, he's revelling in this. Woods has got a roller-coaster of a putt on 15 and he's left himself a five-footer for par. Here's Luke Donald, the world number one, in with a respectable 71 - but respectable isn't good enough to win majors, you've got to play out of your skin.

  38. 1817:

Par for Scott on 14, he stays four shots clear of Tiger. Snedeker back to five under, five over for his round. Ernie has nicked a shot back on 17, he's five under and into a tie for fifth.

  39. 1815:

Scott follows up that monster tee shot on 14 with a poor wedge, his ball dropping off the front. McDowell with a putt to get to seven under... that was in all the way but he didn't hit it. If the wheels came off for Snedeker a couple of hours ago someone just set him on fire - a duffed chip at 14, as in properly duffed, like I might do. Obviously, I wouldn't follow up by almost chipping in, but that's still another shot gone.

  40. 1808:

A little bit of background on Denmark's young slugger Thorbjorn Olesen for you as he continues to hang around at the top of the leaderboard on six under. The 22-year-old won his first European Tour title with victory over England's Chris Wood at the Sicilian Open in April after second-placed finishes at the Italian Open and Open de France. The world number 112 likes a bit of footy, with FC Copenhagen and Manchester United his teams of choice.

  41.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"Adam Scott's on cruise control right now but there's no respite on a course like this and once you starting losing it, it can be hard to stop it."

  42.

Peter Craig on Twitter: "Thrilling if Scott closes this one out. Once again Lytham will have delivered a genuinely classy winner."

Luke McGovern on Twitter: "Tiger looks poised to make a move. Scott is playing some confident golf but he must be aware of Tiger coming up behind him."

  43. 1808:

Snedeker pulls his tee shot into some nonsense on 14 before Scott pulls out the pounder and crackerjacks a drive fully 340 yards down the middle. Bill Haas of the United States in with a two-under 68, three under overall. Woods leaves his birdie attempt short on 14, remains four behind the leader.

  44. 1807:
Former professional Mark Roe on BBC Radio 5 live:

"It is a commanding lead for Adam Scott. A lot of players say they are not scoreboard watchers, but it it so big here that he cannot miss it. He will know where they stand and this is where caddy Steve Williams comes into play. He will be whispering into Adam's ear keeping him calm and telling him that heart of the green is just perfect."

  45. 1805:

Graeme's father Kenny McDowell on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Graeme's putter came under a bit of pressure earlier on - he's had a wee bit of tuition before he came out here and it seems to be paying off."

  46. 1804:
    BOGEY

Snedeker misses that birdie chance and stays six under as Ernie misses with his birdie attempt over on 15. Woods into the 14th with a nine iron, decent effort, as Scott tugs a nervy par putt left of the cup on 13, his lead now four.

  47. 1802:

Snedeker with a cute pitch into 13, could very well make birdie from there. Els in trouble again at 15, having to chop out of a wet bunker. Olesen in all sorts of bother in that trap on 14 - his ball pops out, has a wee look, and pops back in again... next up he catches the lip, but at least he's out of there...

  48. 1758:
    BOGEY

Paul Lawrie lets a shot go at 14 to drop back to two under as Olesen finds another bunker, the Dane will be playing out sideways again. Scott gets away with an iffy swing on 13, his ball finishing just short of the trap.

  49. 1756:

Scott on tee at the 355-yard par four 13th and he pings a five iron down the middle. Donald back to level for the week, another major when it never happened for the world number one. McDowell rattles one into the centre of the green with a hybrid on 15, he could do with another birdie before the day is out. Simon Dyson of England in with a 73...

  50. 1752:

Tiger going about his work quietly out there and that wedge shot is nothing to noise off about, 10 yards too short into 13. Olesen with his second into 13 and that's much better, pop in that 10-footer and he'll be seven under and tied for second.

  51.

Steven Horner on Twitter: "Looking like Scott vs Woods tomorrow, should be great to watch."

  52. 1749:

Woods with another iron on the 355-yard 13th and he drills one down the middle. Scott leaves himself a tester on 12 as Snedeker stops the rot with a par. Scott makes that tester, doesn't look like he's going anywhere.

  53. 1746:
    BIRDIE

McDowell's second into 14 - decent, nothing more than that. But what a putt that is! The Northern Irishman, coming right back into form, draining a lungun for back-to-back birdies and six under overall.

  54. 1742:
    BIRDIE-BOGEY-BOGEY

Snedeker races that birdie putt five feet by. Scott doesn't hit his eagle putt - that was bang on line - but pops in for birdie and a five-shot lead. Woods with a decent chip but he's got a knee-knocker coming back, as Snedeker misses that par putt to slide to six under. In an hour and 20 minutes Snedeker has gone from leading by one to trailing by six. That's golf, it messes with your mind. Shot gone for Els, ran out of sticking plasters on the 14th...

  55. 1736:
    BIRDIE

Adam Scott with a very good chance of an eagle at the par-five 11th, Snedeker will have to make do with a par, unless he can make a 50-footer disappear. Woods has overcooked his tee shot on 12... McDowell moves to five under courtesy of a curly-wurly one that drags its feet before dropping in. Calcavecchia, champion in 1989, in with a 69, six birdies on his card.

  56. 1733:

Graeme McDowell has a chance to get to five under at 13 and here's Olesen on 11 - 15-footer, straight down the middle to get to six under par and outright fourth. Woods makes a safe par to remain one ahead of him... Peter Alliss on rappers? "They look funny and make strange noises." Indeed, Peter, indeed...

  57.

Zach Johnson, who finished on five under after a 66, the best round of the day so far: "That was a good way to end the day after a couple of mishaps but it is nice to get one back on the 18th and hopefully gives me momentum for tomorrow.

"Being aggressive here is knowing you have the right yardage. I will continue to do what I do and with these conditions, you don't know what will happen."

  58. 1729:

Matt Kuchar is level for his round through 11 and seven off the lead, playing partner Paul Lawrie, champion in 1999, one over. Martin Laird, also of Scotland, found things rather tricky today, a round of 82. That means he'll play the final round on his lonesome, meaning John Daly and Tom Watson will play together.

  59.

Jonathon Evans: "I feel Brandt's wheels are starting to come off. However, Adam Scott's are firmly screwed on! Maiden major in his grasp?"

Jake Meaden on Twitter: "Snedeker has bottled it now. Tiger and Scott will battle it out for the championship."

  60. 1725:

Woods with his second into 11... overcooks it ever so sightly... Scott marmalises his drive down the middle on 10, Snedeker yanks his into some jungle...

  61. 1724:

Scott is making them disappear from all parts - he's just bent in another monster on 10 to remain 11 under. If he's not making birdies, he's making 30-footers for par. Snedeker in for a par when birdie was makeable... Els rather nibbles at his birdie attempt on 13, I believe, stays five under...

  62.
    Iain Carter, BBC Sport

"It looks odds-on a Tiger Woods/Adam Scott for the final round with Steve Williams, who caddied Woods for 13 of his 14 major triumphs, being caddy for Scott in an Open Championship. That really will be quite something and the cameras will be on the three of them."

  63.

Adam Vjestica: "Snedeker's beginning to buckle, Tiger's on the prowl, belly putting (broom handle) still angers me. Open's heating up nicely."

  64.
Jay Townsend, 5 live golf summariser

"Tiger really feels confident at the moment. He wasn't in touch with his short game, but he is looking like he is in touch with everything now and in perfect stride."

  65. 1715:

Scott tugs his drive on 10 into a trap, as I should report that Snedeker did indeed drop a shot at the ninth, meaning Scott has now cleaved open a four-shot lead. Ernie making some clutch putts today, another eight-footer for par on 12. McDowell level through 11, grinding out a score, seven off the lead.

  66. 1713:

Adam Scott comes up short with his long-range birdie attempt at nine but stays 11 under. Stevie Williams getting excited - let's see how much he's laughing when he meets Tiger on the first tee tomorrow afternoon... Tiger putting across the 10th... close, so close, but sliding by...

  67. 1709:

Scott safely on at the par-three ninth, Snedeker could hand him a four-shot lead here, he finds the sand. It's a head-high trap and all he can do is pop it 15 feet by. Woods with a blind approach into 10 and that's pretty good from there, another chance for a birdie, albeit from some way out.

  68.

John Deehan on Twitter: "Mouth is starting to water at the prospect of Scott (with Williams) being paired with Tiger on final day."

  69.

Terence Banyard on Twitter: "I want Thorbjorn to win the golf. Just for his utterly epic name."

  70. 1705:
    BIRDIE-BOGEY-BIRDIE

Scott and Snedeker can feel the breath of a Tiger on the back of their necks - birdie on the par-three ninth, the 14-time major winner gets to seven under. Snedeker feeling it now, that par putt comes up a few feet short and he drops back to eight under. And just like that, Adam Scott leads by three - back-to-back birdies for the Aussie, this one a monster, the field being stretched again...

  71. 1700:
    BIRDIE

Scott with a pretty ordinary approach at eight as Johnson (the one they call Zach) makes three at the last for a round of 66 and five under overall. Luke Donald is still out there but his hopes are fading fast - one over through 11, he needed something a bit more noteworthy than that today.

  72.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"Things are hotting up now, with Tiger making putts. The conditions are great, the golf is great, the atmosphere is great, and it's great to be here to watch this."

  73. 1657:

Zach Johnson coming up 18 and that's a doozy, a wedge to within a couple of feet. McDowell quits on his birdie putt at 10, stays four under. Woods at the par-three ninth and that's a Georgia peach for another eminently makeable birdie putt.

  74. 1653:

Louis Oosthuizen, our 2010 champion, in with a 68 for two under overall. Scott on the 416-yard eighth, along the railway line, and that's safely down the middle. Olesen has a sizable pair on him on this evidence - two up-and-downs and a 15-foot birdie putt on eight to get back to five under. Woods with a 15-footer for three straight birdies... didn't hit it, he stays six under.

  75. 1648:
    BIRDIE-BIRDIE

... Snedeker makes that birdie on seven to stop the rot and get back to nine under and Scott follows him in to get to 10 under, still leads by one...

  76. 1647:

The field, as expected, has concertinaed and here's Ken Brown on the seventh green with his mini-football... Meanwhile, back in the real world, Snedeker pops his chip to within a couple of feet, should be a birdie from there. Scott for eagle from 20 feet... gives it a chance, misses just right...

  77.
    Wayne Grady, BBC Sport

"The course is set up quite difficult from what I've seen and the guys are struggling to make a lot of birdies. Three under par is the low score on the front nine by Mark Calcavecchia and 68 is the best in the clubhouse so the pins are quite difficult, I'm not saying unfair, but difficult because conditions are perfect.

"I think you've got to make a bit of a score on seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12 and 13. That's where they seem to making the birdies and the rest of the time you've just got to hold on.

"I think it will be close at the end of the day but I'm backing Scotty to be in the final group again tomorrow."

  78. 1643:
    BIRDIE-BIRDIE

Another magnificent bunker escape by Olesen at seven, he threw everything at that. Woods with his putt from just off the green... runs out of steam a couple of feet short but he taps in for birdie and six under overall - the Tiger is stirring. Olesen with a tremendous up-and-down for birdie, the 22-year-old Dane climbs to -4. Par for Els at 10, he stays five under.

  79. 1638:
    BIRDIE

McDowell makes that birdie on eight to get back to four under as Woods stings his second over the back of the seventh for a long-range eagle putt. Scott looking confident, finding the centre of the fairway with his drive on seven. Snedeker flirts with a bunker and gets away with it. India's Anirban Lahiri is in with a 70 after that ace at the ninth, level par for the week.

  80. 1635:
    BOGEY

McDowell on eight, wedge in, terrific shot, birdieable putt from there. Snedeker did indeed pop out sideways and he puts his fourth to within a couple of feet - another shot gone. Adam Scott from long range and he misses just right, stays nine under, but now has the outright lead. Kuchar for par on seven and he misses just left, the American back to -3.

  81.

Lee Price on Twitter: "Nice to see big easy moving up the leader board! come on Els!"

  82. 1631:

Snedeker's wheels are rattling all of a sudden - shot gone at the fifth and he's now found his first bunker of the week on six. Ernie missed that makeable birdie putt on nine, stays five under. Snedeker right up against the face, looks like he's punting it sideways...

  83. 1628:
    BOGEY

Could have been worse for Olesen, just the one shot gone on six, but the Dane slips back to -3. I had good feelings about Dufner today but he's lost is grip and is slipping down the leaderboard, three over through seven, -1 overall. Tiger's got the big stick out! I think this might be the first time this week and he's splattered his ball down the middle on the par-five seventh. Have that.

  84. 1624:
    WHAT A SHOT!

Decent effort, very decent effort from Olesen, but that'll be a couple gone. Ernie on nine - nine iron, into the heart, chance to get to six under. MONSTER! Tiger rams one home from about 40 feet out for only the third birdie at six today, he's back to -5 and four off the lead.

  85.
    Iain Carter, BBC Sport

"Graeme McDowell and Jason Dufner have been given the hurry up after falling behind schedule. They are not on the clock, but will be if they don't abide by referee Andy McFee's instruction."

  86. 1622:

Scott gives it some boom-boom off the tee on the long par-four sixth and finds some short scrub. Social golf, Snedeker cosies his tee shot up beside him. Calcavecchia showing signs of old bones, he's slipped back to -1. Olesen in all sorts of trouble on six - out of the scrub and plugged in the face of a bunker...

  87. 1619:
    BOGEY

Many thanks Michael, Ben Dirs back in the seat to take you through to the close of play. Here's Olesen from the long stuff and he's bent that head high into the gallery. Snedeker for par on five... that was iffy, only four feet but he's missed right to drop back to nine under and a share of the lead with playing partner Adam Scott. That's the American's first dropped shot this week.

  88.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"I spoke to Brandt Snedeker earlier in the season and he said that the one thing that he wanted to do is learn to hit a chip and run. I guess he has used it a few times out on the links but he is a classic American guy, normally hitting a lob shot up on the green.

"You can get away with that in conditions like we have had this week. It has really opened the doors for the American players because I thought that coming to a traditional English links in the middle of a summer of drought would be tricky, hard and bouncy. But now what we have is very different and a soft links course is just an invitation for these guys to go crazy."

  89. 1616:

Still nothing to report of note from the front two with Adam Scott and leader Brandt Snedeker both plateauing with four consecutive pars each in their opening holes. Ben Dirs is back in the building and at his keyboard to take over. Bye from me.

  90. 1613:
    BIRDIE

Ernie Els strokes away a birdie on the seventh like a father ushering his firstborn through the school gates for the first time. The South African knows his way around the latter stages of the big tournaments and is now up to five under, alongside Zach Johnson in third.

  91. 1609:
    BOGEY

Thorbjorn Olesen looks like a collection of awkward vowels that the press will be grappling with for some time to come. The 22-year-old Dane has coughed up a bogey at the fourth to slip to four under, but isn't looking the slightest bit bothered by Tiger Woods' presence alongside him.

  92. 1604:

Ugly, ugly scenes for Martin Laird as he veers all over the track out on the back nine. The Scot is nine over for his round through 14, with three dirty double-bogey blotches on his scorecard. He is way, way out the back of the pack on eight over overall and only Americans John Daly and Tom Watson behind him.

  94. 1559:
    BIRDIE

Zach Johnson has jumped up more rungs than just about anyone else out there today. The 2007 Masters champion is fresh from a victory in the John Deere Classic in Illinois and has just tickled in another birdie, this time on 13, to bounce on to four under for his round and five under overall. He has compatriot Matt Kuchar and young Dane Thorbjorn Olesen for company in a tie for third.

  95.
    Iain Carter, BBC Sport

"So Tiger Woods is off to a poor start with a bogey at the first. It wouldn't be a surprise if he is feeling a little anxious. Third rounds in majors have not gone well for him of late. The last time he broke 70 on a Saturday was his 66 at the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach."

  96. 1557:
    Wayne Grady, BBC Sport

"The atmosphere is electric, such a big crowd on such a small piece of real estate that a round of applause really echoes around out there."

  97. 1555:
    BIRDIE

Ernie Els is rumbling up the standings. The South African, another former winner, picks up a stroke to move to one under for his round and four under for the tournament. The crowd are massing behind leader Snedeker. The American could do with putting a bit more fresh air between him and the rest.

  98. 1551:
    BOGEY

Tiger Woods has hobbled out of the starting blocks this morning with a pair of bogeys on the first and third, rolling him back to four under par for the tournament. Up on the fourth green, 1999 winner Paul Lawrie misses with a birdie putt to leapfrog him and move up to five-under, but 1989 champ Mark Calcavecchia draws a bead and slot in his birdie putt to move up to four under.

  99. 1547:
    BIRDIE

Contrasting fortunes for Donald's European Ryder Cup team-mate Graeme McDowell who birdies the fourth to shuffle up to four under.

  100. 1545:
    DOUBLE BOGEY

Luke Donald looks like he is in a bunker filled with quicksand rather than the Flyde coast finest. His ball is horribly bogged down and the Englishman's first attempt to escape dribbles backwards a foot. Bemused looks exchanged with his caddy before he finally gets up and down for a double bogey six at the sixth.

  101. 1541:

Brandt Snedeker has failed to convert either of his two previous halfway leads on the PGA Tour into victories. No sign of any shakes infecting his game yet though as he holds par at the second. Adam Scott misses a decent chance on the same green to join the leader on 10 under.

  102.

Paul from Thurrock via text: "Really hope Tiger Woods picks up a couple of shots on the leaders today, nothing better than going into the final day with him a couple back!"

  103. 1538:
    BIRDIE

Zach Johnson rolls a lazy 15-footer right down the pipe to take a birdie on 12, move to four under and a share of fifth place. Four shots scooped up by the American since he dropped one on the second hole of the day.

  104. 1535:

Bubba Watson's hot streak has chilled dramatically along the back nine with a bogey at 14th, followed by a double at the 15th. The US Masters champ has a chance to scrape back a stroke with a makeable birdie putt at the 16th, but the little blighter rides the lip and refuses to drop. Two under overall.

  105. 1531:

Adam Scott is safe and sound from tee to fairway on the second. Brandt Snedeker fidgits around like he forgot to visit the little boys' room before setting out on the 18 as he prepares to blast off. Nothing to worry about though for the leader, who chases up to alongside Scott on the fairway,

  106. 1527:

Righto, with everyone out on the course, I'm going to have a little break - here's Mike Henson for a while...

  107. 1525:
    DOUBLE BOGEY-DOUBLE BOGEY

Steve Stricker is in reverse, two over through five, and Poulter has had a bit of a nightmare on 15 - almost chips in but he'll be tapping in for a double, the Englishman sliding to +1. Not a happy pairing, Bubba's dropped a couple as well. Here's 1989 champion Mark Calcavecchia with his second into eight - he's got a bit of a heaver's swing but it works, into the heart. Snedeker pars the first, Scott makes that clutch eight-footer to stay one behind him...

  108.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"Adam Scott was right in the mix at the Masters last year and I think that is important to get the feeling of what it is like at the business end of a major.

"We all marvel at his fantastic swing and if he can just keep working it into the breeze with a bit of draw, which is what you need to do then he is the guy that has all the crendentials at 32 to finally step up and win a major."

  109. 1521:

Bubba with his third into 15 - parachutes in but it's not mission accomplished, he'll do well to save par from there. Only two men yet to tee off, Australia's Adam Scott and leader Brandt Snedeker. Here's Scott... blocks it, finds sand to the right... here's Snedeker - no bogeys this week - and he's safely on.

  110.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"The wind staying down is really helping Woods. He doesn't like that hard left-to-right wind which is the prevailing one round here. The driver is his weakest club - he hits it right and left - so every time he can throttle down on a three wood or two irons and play strategy golf then he will.

"I played with him for two days at Royal Liverpool when he hit two irons off the tee all week en route to winning that Open there. If the wind steps up and he is required to pull the driver out of the bag then that could get interesting."

  111. 1518:
    BOGEY

Well done Olesen, making that 12-footer disappear to stay five under. Misread from Woods - started left, stays left, back to -5 he goes.

  112.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"Tiger Woods is always the danger man in any field. That shot in from the greenside bunker last night will have given him a boost of determination.

"When you do something like that on the 18th it gets you out of here and back in in a good frame of mind."

  113. 1516:

Kyle Stanley of the United States is piecing together something splendid - two under through nine, all over the flag at 10. I said Woods was straight down the middle at the first, and he was - but he was also long, and a rather nibbled chip leaves him in danger of dropping a shot. Olesen found a trap and his escape goes skating by.

  114. 1514:
    Maureen Madill, BBC Sport

"I'm about to follow leader Brandt Snedeker and Adam Scott on their rounds and having already been on the course this morning and I can see it's definitely drying out. Once again there are lots of pins that have been put very close to the front edges of the greens, which are deceptively huge.

"Look out for the 8th, that's one that's catching the players out - the balls are spinning back off 30 yards down the slope so controlling the spin is very important. There's still not quite enough breeze for my liking though."

  115.
    Rob Hodgetts, BBC Sport

On Twitter: "Crowd so big trying to cross 18 to see Woods tee off on 1st they're letting people over fairway in batches. It's like waiting at the lights."

  116. 1513:

Lawrie on the second tee, having parred the first... bombs it... Bubba let a shot go at 14 and he's followed up with an iffy drive on 15, in danger of letting a fine round slip away. Here's young Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark on the first... down the middle... he's playing with a gentleman called Tiger Woods, also down the middle...

  117.

Jamie Moss on Twitter: "Would love to see @bubbawatson finish day 3 in contention and take it tomorrow!"

  118. 1506:

Donald for birdie on three - did I say four? If so, I was wrong - and he's bent that in to get to -3. McDowell with his second into the second... rattles it through the green... Donald safely away at the 392-yard par-four fourth...

  119. 1503:

Matt Kuchar, he of the flat swing, on the first and he is safely on the dancefloor. The American playing with 1999 champion Paul Lawrie and the Scot gets inside him. I like Matt Kuchar - always wears a vague smile, as if he's just remembered a lovely picnic he had with a lover, back in his Salad Days.

  120. 1500:

... Bubba's found nonsense off the tee on 14 - just when you think you've got this course licked, it'll pull your pants down and give you a spanking. Donald with a peach of an approach at four - grimaces at it, no idea why, it's beautiful. Zach Johnson's birdie putt at nine horseshoes out, he stays three under.

  121. 1455:
    BIRDIE-BIRDIE

Dustin Johnson, who some thought might prosper this week, is two under through 17 for one under overall. Namesake Zach drains a monster on eight to get to three under - he kicked off with a 65, had an iffy day yesterday, but is back on song today. I said there was a 65 out there somewhere and Bubba Watson is doing his best to find it - another birdie, this time on the short, par-four 13th, and he's five under and five off the lead.

  122.

Second-placed Adam Scott: "I played well and we have a nice day for it again. I am hoping for more of the same and to stay in touch with the leader.

"If he gets off to a hot start, I might have to adjust my game plan but it will be about survival out there."

  123. 1452:

Here's the free-swinging Jason Dufner - 'The Waggler', that's what I like to call him - safely on at the first. He's playing with Graeme McDowell - 'G-Mac', that's what some people like to call him, although not me - and he, too, is safely into the heart.

  124. 1449:

Steve Stricker, who I thought was a ridiculous bet at 66-1 before a ball was hit, has dropped a shot at the first to slide to +1. As, indeed, did his playing partner James Morrison of England. Donald cosies up his birdie putt at the second, stays two under.

  125. 1447:

Southport's Matthew Baldwin was in the 11th group out this morning, but only the fourth player to register a sub-par round at the recorders' tent.

The 26-year-old, who is now one under par after 54 holes in the wake of his 69, believes he could have made more inroads into the top of the leaderboard had his short game been better.

"Tee to green it was fantastic, the best I've played, but I was poor on the greens again," he told BBC Radio Merseyside. I'm going off to hit some putts now to work on it."

  126. 1446:

Zach Johnson stiffs an approach to within a few feet of the flag at eight, he's got that to get to three under after a birdie at seven. Bubba playing it safe on 14, safely away with an iron. Ernie for birdie on one... left-to-righter, doesn't quite come back enough, he stays three under.

  127.

Leader Brandt Snedeker, who tees off at 1520: "I had a bit of luck in first couple of days but I put myself in good spots too. I am excited to be out here, no negative thoughts and that might be the secret.

"I just want to hit the fairway and I am putting good and hopefully let that shine through. I feel good and we have a long couple of days ahead of us so I am looking forward to that.

  128. 1440:

Donald made a safe par at the first and here's Ernie Els teeing it up behind him - there's a 65 out there somewhere, could it be him? Perhaps, that's a doozy...

  129. 1439:
    BIRDIE

Seventeen halfway leaders have gone on to win the Claret Jug, can Brandt Snedeker make it 18? Here he is chatting on the telly and he seems like a laid-back kind of guy. He'll be a new name for many, but he's the world number 29 and a three-time winner on the PGA Tour. Bubba with another birdie chance on 13 and this time he slams it into the back of the cup from outside the area - the Masters champion is four under.

  130.
    Wayne Grady, BBC SportKey Moment
  131. 1433:
    BIRDIE

On the first tee, world number one Luke Donald... scuttles one onto the front. He's playing with Steven Alker of New Zealand. Poulter rattles in a birdie putt on 12 to get into the red, Bubba just misses to stay -3...

  132. 1429:
    WHAT A SHOT!

I've said it once and I'll say it again. And I might say it again after that. Not a great deal of spectacular scoring going on out there, which is a wonder, given the benign conditions. But one man who is on the move is Bubba - screws one back at 11, another chance of a birdie. ACE ON NINE! And it's our man from Bangalore, Anirban Lahiri, sprinkling the magic to get to one under for the week.

  133.

Rory McIlroy, after his disappointing round of 73, which left him five over par: "I couldn't really muster up anything out there today. It wasn't difficult to get myself up for it but it is hard to keep yourself going when you know you are out of the tournament.

"There are definitely chances out there for a low score but it is tough. The scores aren't great out there today, but you need to control your ball and keep it on the fairway."

  134.

Graeme McDowell, who tees off at 14:50 alongside Jason Dufner: "There are great crowds here this week, and I am looking forward to the test today. The key today is to stay out of trouble from the tee. The pins have been difficult to putt to this week, and just stay patient with the putting. If it going to be tough tomorrow with the weather conditions changing, you need to be in touch. I cannot afford to be any more than three or four behind going in."

  135. 1423:

Another bird for Calcavecchia, he's two under after three holes and two under for the week. Simon Khan of England has sneaked into the red, one under through three holes. And here's Calc's second into the par-four fourth... not much cop... he's got his wife on his bag, which is nice, if not a little bit dangerous...

  136. 1420:

Thorbjorn Olesen, who tees off with Tiger Woods at 15:10 BST: "It has been my dream to play with probably the greatest player ever to play the game. I will try my best out there. Maybe I will be a bit intimidated on the first tee but then I need to get on with it.

"It is difficult not to watch what he is doing but I need to keep away from the rough and the bunkers. It is a tough golf course, I just need to keep the ball in play."

  137. 1418:

Thorbjorn Olesen, the 22-year-old phenom from Denmark, is playing with Tiger today, a man he's never even met before. Named after his father's hero, former snooker world champion Cliff Thorburn, and hopefully he won't be awed: won the Sicilian Open, he should be OK.

  138. 1415:
    BIRDIE

Poulter muffed his tee shot on 10 and is left with a long-ranger for par - stays well right, still chicken on that bone. Bubba for birdie from six feet... cosies up to the hole and drops, he's three under for the day, three under for the week and the only man taking a bite out of the leaderboard.

  139. 1412:
    BOGEY

Jim Furyk in with a 71 for +3 overall, Harrington leaves his par putt left on 18 for a round of 70. McIlroy in with a 73, it's just not happening at the moment for the former US Open champion.

  140. 1408:

Harrington and McIlroy playing into the 18th green... Padraig slap-bang in the middle of the fairway, not much wind, although this is his third shot... all over the flag, should save par. Bubba stiffs his approach at 10 to within six feet...

  141.

World number one Luke Donald, two under for the tournament, begins his round alongside Steven Alker at 14:30 BST: "I have been working hard on my game and have made some good improvements. I am excited about the next two days and I hope I get in the mix.

"I want to continue to hit the fairways and greens and to give myself options, to slowly catch up to the leaders. I am looking forward to the challenge. There has been great crowds support, I wish I played a little bit more but I will look forward to the 'Luuuke' shouts."

  142.

Clara on Twitter: "Come on Rory, keep your cool!"

Michael Miller on Twitter: "I think Rory McIlroy is so overrated."

  143. 1404:
    BOGEY

After eight straight pars Poulter finally gets a birdie on his card on nine, out in 33. Bubba stays -2, out in 32. Ted Potter Jr is hovering at level par through six holes - the unheralded American qualified for this week by winning the Greenbrier Classic. His nickname: The Wizard. Naturally right-handed, plays southpaw. Oostuizen misses with his par putt on five, drops to -1.

  144. 1358:
    BIRDIE-BIRDIE

Bubba pours in his third bird of the day on the par-four eighth to get to two under. Calcavecchia makes that birdie at the first, the big man gets to two under. Bubba right over the flag on nine, I've got good feelings about this lad. Padraig for birdie at 17 and he's drained it - back to one over par for the two-time Open champion. They're not even bothering to show Rory on the telly now, which is never a good sign...

  145. 1353:
Iain Carter, BBC Sport at Royal Lytham & St Annes

"Twenty-one rounds have been completed so far. By my, rather dodgy, maths the average score is 71.66. John Mclaren is back on Luke Donald's bag after the safe arrival of his first daughter, Georgina Elizabeth weighing 8 pounds 8 ounces, yesterday."

  146. 1352:

England's Ross Fisher has been speaking after a disappointing run of five bogeys on the back nine left him three over for the day and seven over for the tournament: "Plain and simple, I just didn't play well enough," he told BBC Surrey. "I was one under after nine and playing nicely but I hit too many loose shots and didn't hole anything again."

  147. 1350:

Mark Calcavecchia all over the pin at the first, that should be a birdie from there. The 1989 champion is playing with Romero of Argentina, who almost bagged the Claret Jug at Carnoustie in 2007. Martin Laird is stuck in reverse - par-bogey-bogey and he's blocked his tee shot into some nonsense on four. What's worse, he can't find it. Poulter putting downhill on eight... misses just left, will stay level...

  148. 1346:

Oosthuizen looking smooth as an eel out there, putting-wise, the 2010 champion kicking off birdie-par-par. Another Saffer, Garth Mulroy, drains a monster on six to get to -1. Italy's Francesco Molinari, loser of a play-off at the Scottish Open, birdied seven, is one under through 10, level overall.

  149.

Kris Stuart on Twitter: "Fascinating exchanges between @IanJamesPoulter and caddie. Would be great to Mic all these guys up for added insight."

Andrew Mawdsley on Twitter: "Loving listening to poulter and his caddy working out their shots."

  150.
    Rob Hodgetts, BBC Sport

On Twitter: "Westwood back on range. Looks out of sorts with swing. Goes through each part slowly, trying to recapture something. Coach Cowen looks on."

  151.

South Africa's Thomas Aiken (-4): "Last two days I have played nicely but it is about keeping the ball in play on this course. There is not much wind but it is still a brutal course. The course can play different depending on conditions. The first two days played similarly which was good for us, but there is still a lot of golf left to play, so the tournament on starts on Sunday on the back nine."

  152. 1339:

Tiger stalking past the Lytham clubhouse, although he's not off until 1510. Padraig on the short 16th, straight into Seve's car park. McIlroy gives it some humpty, just short and right of the green. Qualifier Matthew Baldwin bogeys the last but that's a nice round of 69 for +1 overall.

  153. 1333:
    Iain Carter, BBC Sport

"Rory McIlroy said he felt capable of being tougher in adversity these days, but his performance here suggests otherwise. Since double bogeying the ninth yesterday he has suffered seven bogeys and no birdies in 23 holes played."

  154. 1331:

Scotland's Martin Laird and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn par the first to remain in that large group on one under. Vijay Singh might be one of the oldest swingers in town but he's putting a decent round together today, in fact he's finished - in with a 68, level for the week. Poulter involved in another lengthy discussion with his bagman and in the end he just hacks it out of the rough stuff. Not sure what that was all about, why didn't he just say: "Just hack it out of the rough stuff"?

  155. 1329:

US PGA champion Keegan Bradley, who finished on one over after a round of 68: "I have played some links courses in America but they don't compare to here in the UK. The atmosphere is really fun but the course is not when then wind is blowing, it is a tough test."

  156. 1326:

No birdies at six so far today and here's Poulter popping in for par and Bubba doing the same to stay one under. Former Masters champion Zach Johnson putting from afar on the first - no dice (whatever that means), the American stays -1. Bubba takes a five iron on the seventh - all very well playing it safe if you play it safe, but Bubba finds some scrub. Then again, Poulter finds a trap with his driver, so if Lytham hasn't got you one way, it's got you another...

  157. 1318:
    Rob Hodgetts, BBC Sport

Some light Saturday lunchtime leaders' stats:

Fairways hit overall: Snedeker 17, rank 91; Scott 21, rank 16; Woods 26, rank 1.

Greens in regulation: Snedeker 31, rank 1; Scott 26, rank 15; Woods 29, rank 4.

    Putts: Snedeker 58, rank 45; Scott 56, rank 21; Woods 58, rank 45.

    Birdies: Snedeker 10, rank 2; Scott 12, rank 1; Woods 8, rank 11.

Av driving distance: Snedeker 296.8, rank 16; Scott 312.5, rank 1; Woods 266.8, rank 129.

  158. 1317:

Only two men currently on course who are under par for the week - Bubba and Oosthuizen, old foes from Augusta - so they're not exactly tearing Lytham a new hole this afternoon. Huge conflab between Poulter and his caddie before his approach at six - decent enough, although not on the dancefloor. The wind tugging away at the flags and keeping scoring honest.

  159. 1311:
    BIRDIE

Carlos Tevez of Manchester City signing autographs and flashing that magnificent smile. In contrast, his missus doesn't look too happy to be there. Oosthuizen bends in a birdie putt on one to get to one under - remember, this man lost the Masters play-off to Bubba, so he's proving to be a big-time player after winning the Open in 2010.

  160. 1308:
    WHAT A SHOT!

Shot gone for Goosen on one, Ogilvy makes his par. Outrageous shot from Jimenez - knee-deep in cabbage, launches at his ball as if with a pick and it scuttles to within six feet of the hole. You won't see better all week. McIlroy on 13, six-footer for birdie... misses. McIlroy blows out his cheeks and wears the look of a man who is being forced to traipse round Halfords looking for a new distributor cap. Watson holes a monster on five! Back to one under he goes...

  161. 1302:
    Iain Carter, BBC Sport

"It's testament to the toughness of Lytham that on a morning perfect for low scoring, with no wind and soft greens, the lowest round so far is a 68. Keegan Bradley moved back to one over for the Championship after setting the early low round of the day. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is looking terribly out of sorts."

  162.

Yorkshire's Simon Dyson, who is on one under and tees off at 1410, tells BBC Sport: "It is a beautiful day and I am looking forward to it. I woke up this morning not feeling too good. I felt rotten went I went to bed last night and it got worse when I got up. Hoepfully I will get better through the day, though."

  163. 1300:
    BOGEY-BOGEY

Bubba pops out a cute bunker escape on four as Rory lets another shot go on 12, the Northern Irishman drops to +6. Not sure how that putt from Bubba stayed out, looked to be dropping before recoiling from the horror - the Masters champion back to level.

  164. 1254:

England's Matthew Baldwin is two under through 14 and level for the week while compatriot Ross Fisher is in with a 74 for +7 overall. Here's 1989 champion Mark Calcavecchia - the 52-year-old is one under and tied for 15th, he'll be off soon. Two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen on the first tee and he's tugged an iron into a green-side trap. Another US Open champion, Geoff Ogilvy, finds the heart.

  165. 1246:

Bubba slings Poulter back a divot the size of Wales after the Englishman's solid approach, chance of a par after finding a bunker off the tee. Bubba stays one under, Poulter makes that 10-footer disappear to stay level - neither man out of this quite yet.

  166. 1241:
    BOGEY

Hunter Mahan, much-tipped, bends in a long-range par putt at the third to stay one under today and level for the tournament. Bubba at the third, choking down on a wedge, and he's left that well short. Jimenez's par putt on two horseshoes out, he drops back to +1.

  167. 1237:
    Rob Hodgetts, BBC Sport

Here's more from five-time Open champion Tom Watson, this time talking about next week's Senior British Open at Turnberry, site of his near miss in the Open at the age of 59: "I'm not very excited right now the way I'm hitting it. I've got to change something, it hasn't been very good this four-week stretch. I've tried a lot of different things and nothing seems to work so I'll have to go back to the drawing board and go outside the box.

"I've always enjoyed Turnberry for obvious reasons, the whole environment, the views are beautiful, Ailsa Craig, the lighthouse, it's a wonderful setting for a game of golf. But I'm concerned about the way I'm playing. I wish I was playing better going in so I would give myself a chance to win. Right now, I don't give myself a chance to win the way I'm hitting it. I'm in the doldrums with my swing right now."

  168. 1236:

Poulter with an iron off the tee on three and that's not too clever, his ball galloping into a fairway trap. Bradley in with a 68 for +1 overall.

  169. 1233:

Blue skies over Lytham, bit of a haze, a lick of wind, but not much more than that. Harrington on the 11th and he's leaked that miles right into some tyre tracks. Rory McIlroy, currently five over, rattles his drive down the middle. Keegan Bradley, the PGA champion, is putting a decent round together, two under today, and here he is with a solid approach into 18.

  170. 1231:
Tony Jacklin, BBC Sport analyst and former Open champion

"The way the leaderboard looks right now I'd be very surprised if Tiger Woods doesn't win. He looks very much in charge of his game, he's well positioned on the course, he's contained, his body language is good, he's not messing with his swing. He's basically back to business again and has been that way two or three times earlier this year with tournament wins. If I had one person to pick it would be Tiger."

  171. 1229:

Donaldson escapes with a par at the first, courtesy of a clutch eight-footer, he stays level. Poulter for a bird at two... long-ranger, leaves it three feet short. Bubba with a shorter one and his breaks too soon - the Masters champion remains one under.

  172. 1227:
    Rob Hodgetts, BBC Sport

Our reporter has grabbed a word with Tom Watson. Here's what he said about his third-round playing partner Lee Westwood: "He is a wonderful guy and a really fine player. I wish I could have inspired him a little bit more with my play. I think I dragged him down the way I played. He's knocked at the door too many times not to win a major. The only advice I can give him is to shoot lower than everybody else in the tournament. He'll be there again. I expect him to win a major championship."

  173. 1225:

Here's England's Ian Poulter with his approach at two... flirts with the green-side trap to the right of the green before threading back onto the short stuff. Bubba into heart...

  174. 1224:

Lee Westwood, after finishing his third round on four over: "It's always nice to play with Tom Watson, the first time I have since 1996. It never gets boring playing with Tom, he's such a gentleman, a great ambassador and still competitive. The courses are getting a bit longer maybe when you play into the wind, but he hits it lovely.

"The pins are a little bit trickier, 13 is particularly interesting, but the coure is very scoreable if you play well, 64 or 65, I'm just not playing well enough, not really any apsect of my game is strong enough. The greens are playing a a bit quicker too, that took some getting used to."

  175. 1222:

Many thanks Sham, Ben Dirs now in the seat. And I join you as Donaldson of Wales tees off at the first and he's ended up in a green-side trap. Donaldson playing with Jimenez and the Spaniard finds the guts of the green.

  176. 1220:

Ian Poulter and Bubba Watson play their first shots on the 481 yard second hole and they make their way down. This is where I make my way out, leaving you in the capable hands of the main man Benjamin Dirs who is now in the live text hot seat.

  177.

Mark Pratt on Twitter: "Would love to hear more of the conversations between players."

John Zinkus on Twitter: "Hearing Bubba and Poults chatting on #BBCGolf like its a normal friendly round is a breath of fresh air."

  178. 1216:

Unlucky for Rory McIlroy. An attempt at birdie on the ninth finds the ball dying on the edge of the hole, and it does not drop in. The crowd try their best to suck it in, but to no avail.

Par for Ian Poulter on the first, nice little birdie starter for Bubba Watson.

  179. 1212:

Ian Poulter is getting under way on the first, following in behind Masters champion Bubba Watson. A 'whoosh' comes off the ball as the leftie strike a superb tee-shot and is in prime position for a birdie. Hertfordshire's Poulter can only hope for par, as he has left himself with a long putt.

  180.

Nick Taylor on Twitter: "Will we see another long putter win a major, with 2 wins out of the last 3. 3 players in the top 10 using one (Scott, Kuchar, Els)"

  181. 1207:

Both Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy recover well and are in good position for par on the eighth, but Harrington drops a shot as he is unable to down a putt from the edge of the green. He looks bemused as to what went wrong on that hole. Looks easy for Rory..but he misses! Another dropped shot, he looks resigned to defeat now.

  182. 1202:

Padraig Harrington will not be happy with that, skipping off into the rough. Rory McIlroy plays, what looks like, a beautiful approach bang onto the green, but the ball rolls back, and back, and back off the green and down the slope. Not going the Northern Irishman's way this morning, he gives wry grin.

  183. 1202:
    Iain Carter, BBC Sport

"It's been a miserable week for Lee Westwood. The course set up was ideal for him but he failed to summon his A game. The Englishman has just three putted the last for a 71 and goes into the final round at four over par. Interesting to see Tom Watson chipping from on the green at the last. Do we call that an up and down? Anyway he managed it in two strokes."

  184. 1200:

Someone sent a text in this morning saying: "Look out for the 15 orange Rickie Fowler lookalikes today. They are at Lytham for Hamish's stag weekend!" Six of them have just been spotted on the telly in bright orange overalls and caps, enjoying the golf. They looked like they were behaving themselves too, keep it up!

  185. 1157:

Harrington goes left on the eighth, and his heart skips a beat for a second as a ball bounces in the rough, but luckily bounces out into the flat stuff. McIlroy plays a much better tee shot, finding the middle of the fairway.

  186. 1154:

McIlroy does well with the putter, stroking it up the hill leaving himself a short putt on the five par. Harrington pars too and is still on one-over-par for the championship.

  187. 1151:

Harrington gets to the green with his third and McIlroy tries the same, but gets too much purchase and sees the ball roll off the back of the green. He shakes his head as he dejectedly makes his way to play his fourth shot.

  188. 1147:
    WESTWOOD FINISHES ON FOUR OVER

Lee Westwood finishes with a bogey on the 18th. 71 for the day and four-over-par for the championship. A warm handshake with partner Tom Watson, who finishes on nine over par and they will come back tomorrow morning to do it all over again.

  189.

Adam Caddoo on Twitter: "John Daly is rocking those trousers."

  190. 1143:

Oh deary me. Rory McIlroy does the same as Harrington and both are deep in the rough. Problems on this par five.

  191. 1142:

Five-time Open champion Tom Watson gets a generous round of applause from the crowd as he makes his way to the green on the final hole. Lee Westwood is not too far behind him as their third rounds near an end.

  192. 1140:

Oh no, Padraig in trouble. Drifts the tee-shot right on the seventh and finds himself in the thick stuff.

  193. 1138:

John Daly, puffing at a cigarette, takes a free drop in a flooded bunker on the 17th. Ever the extravagent, he seems to be wearing a kaleidoscope style of pants today. Wonder if he and Jimenez have smoking sessions together when they have a few days off?

  194.

Patrick Moore on Twitter: "Jimenez is a legend. Awesome cigar holder."

Steve Farnworth on Twitter: "Jimenez's cigar holder - fantastic! #legend."

  195. 1134:

McIlroy finds himself on the edge of the rough on the sixth, but plays well to get on the green. Big ask for birdie, but should make par, and does so. He needs to start picking up shots, though.

  196. 1134:

We catch a glimpse of Miguel Angel Jimenez on the practice course, chipping away at a pile of balls. Of course, his cigar is not too far away, being kept in his golf ball holder. He will have to be careful not to strike that, otherwise it will be a waste of a perfectly good Cuban.

  197. 1133:

England's Ian Poulter, who is level par, hopes to move up the leaderboard when he starts at 12:10 BST: "I'm feeling good, I've put the ball in good positions this week but now need to take advantage of that. I'm going to have lots of chances, I just need to take them.

"What we haven't had this year is the bad weather, we've seen 10 shots switch around before but the weather was blustery and rainy then. Hopefully, we'll get a strong breeze later and then we can try to cut through the deficit."

  198.

Dylan Cromby: "Feel the field have to keep a very close eye on Tiger, however I feel Snedeker is going to be hard to catch."

  199. 1126:

Ross Fisher was going well, but has faltered on the 10th and 11th, bogeying on both to leave himself on four-over-par alongside Rory McIlroy.

  200.
Tony Jacklin, BBC Sport analyst and former Open champion

"Up to now the golf course has been benign, it really is target golf, not links golf that's for sure. We've seen the ball's spinning back on the greens which is not really what we want to see on a links golf course but you do what is necessary and hopefully the wind will pick up before the week's out."

  201. 1123:

Another par for Harrington on the fifth. McIlroy crouches either side of the hole to find the line, but it is not use as he misses par putt. Another bogey for the Northern Irishman and not a good start to the morning for him. What was that he was saying, "I'd like to get back to minus three or minus four." Going to need a stunning round for that to happen now, he is currently on four-over-par.

  202. 1120:

But Westwood finds his way back onto the green with a lovely chip, applying a little backspin on the ball to leave himself a six-foot putt..which he misses, leaving himself a tap in for bogey.

  203. 1116:

Lee Westwood on the 16th, after a birdie on the previous hole, overcooks the tee-shot which bounces on the green and flies off the other side. He is in a bit of a pickle here.

  204.

Matt Oakley on Twitter: "I'm with Nick Faldo, I wouldn't be too happy if someone was clunking my clubs around like that!"

  205. 1113:

McIlroy's lengthy putt attempts drifts right of the hole and stops around six foot away. It is a tricky one for par, which he misses and the Northern Irishman drops his first of the day. Harrington downs it to stay on one-over-par.

  206. 1108:

Padraig Harrington finds himself in the rough after his opening shot, but plays a beautiful second straight onto the green. Rory McIlroy has a partial view of the green from his position and his second shot hangs on to the back edge.

  207.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"Paul Lawrie treats it all with tongue in cheek, when he back doored his way into winning the Open. He knows how well he is playing. Like Graeme McDowell, he is talking confidently and you need to have that. Both are scrambling well too when needed, you couldn't care less how you get the score. You need to be relentless and keep doing it all day, though."

  208. 1105:

England's Lee Westwood is through 14 and has birdied the 11th and 13th to go level for the day, and three-over-par for the championship. Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts, who has a horrific second round after an impressive first, is on the comeback trail, having birdied the second.

  209. 1103:

Fijian Vijay Singh has bogeyed two of his opening six holes to go four-over-par for the championship.

  210. 1101:
    Stat-attack

Hole rankings so far this week (at 1045 BST):

    The four hardest holes so far this week are: 3, 6, 15 & 8. The four easiest are: 16, 13, 9, 7.

The longest driver on Friday was Dustin Johnson with a 339-yard drive on the 14th.

Eight of the 16 Open champions in the 156-man field made the cut. The ones to miss out were: Tom Lehman, David Duval and Stewart Cink (all +5); Sandy Lyle and Todd Hamilton (+6); Darren Clarke (+7); Justin Leonard (+8); Ben Curtis (+9).

  211.

BBC Sport's roving reporter Dan Walker has been talking to American broadcaster Bob Bubka: "I predicted Tiger Woods would win before the start and said as an outside shot that Jason Dufner would be a good bet. I expect Tiger to win, his goal is to get himself in the final twosome, and then I'm sure he'll take care of final business. This is major number 15 he's going for - three within Jack Nicklaus. It's been four years since he won a major but he's worked hard and his game plan here has been impeccable. Some would say it's been conservative but it's working."

  212. 1101:

McIlroy and Harrington on the third. The flag is wafting slighty in the breeze and Padraig plays a nice shot onto the green, which he follows up with a close putt to par. "Come on Rory" shouts a young chap in the crowd, as the Northern Irishman follows Harrington by parring too.

  213.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"Tiger Woods is a danger man and that showed on the 18th. It shows in the determination, he wanted that and he wants to stay in touch with the leaders. It will have got him out in a good frame of mind. With the wind being down, it will have helped, because he doesn't like the left to right wind."

  214. 1051:

Rory McIlroy has parred the second but Padraig Harrington has birdied to move to one-over-par.

  215. 1046:
    HAT-TRICK

American Keegan Bradley has started to click, downing a succession of birdies on seven, eight and nine. Can he keep it going into the back nine?

  216.
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"He is a simple player with a very good swing. The weather has been a key factor for American players to play well. We thought it would be hard and bouncy but this links course is soft."

  217.

David Howell, former world number nine, on BBC One: "For Brandt Snedeker to not drop a shot is incredible, not only in one, but two rounds. I don't think anyone thought that was possible. He has had a little luck with the weather so will that continue?"

  218. 1038:

England's Matthew Baldwin has had a mixed start to his opening three holes; bogey, birdie, par.

  219.
Tony Jacklin, BBC Sport analyst and former Open champion

"All you can really do on a day like this is try and keep doing the same thing. You can't get clever on these golf courses, this game will always come back and pop you on the nose if you try new things. It's a business and it's hard, hard work, it really is."

  220. 1036:
    TRIPLE BOGEY

It goes from bad to worse for John Daly, triple bogeying the 10th. The 1995 Open champion is taking somewhat of a battering from the punishing course this morning.

  221.

BBC Sport's Jamie Gavin on Twitter at Royal Lytham: "Weather an absolute delight today at Royal Lytham great conditions for scoring just a light breeze."

  222. 1032:

And Rory holes his third to par first, which will give him some confidence after a wayward start. Partner Padraig Harrington gets the first in three too.

  223. 1029:

Rory McIlroy is off and has dragged his first tee-shot a little left, missing the green but most importantly, missing the two bunkers. He chips the second nicely, leaving himself a five foot putt for par.

  224. 1027:
    That's ugly!

Oh Rickie Rickie! Having been going so well this morning, all the hard work has been undone on the eighth with a double bogey. Captain Jack Sparrow has to do it all over again.

  225. 1025:
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

"It was weather-dependent on what you did. On a Saturday, you can scare yourself to see what you can do, feel it and take the confidence from it. The Sunday is when you turn the notch up.

"Anybody heading out this morning has freedom. If they just play and put a score on the board it could make a significant change on the tee times tomorrow."

  226.

Gurmeet in Luton via text: "It is a real pleasure watching Tiger back to his best. He has regained absolute mastery of his golf ball, much like the way Lionel Messi has complete control of a football. A 15th major looms!"

  227.

Jay in Southampton via text: "Tiger is starting to get his game together but his putting is still letting him down a little. Don't think he has enough in the tank to win, that honour is going to Scott. The weather will change tomorrow which will suit his style."

  228. 1019:
    Nick Faldo, BBC Sport

Three-time Open champion Sir Nick Faldo has joined BBC Sport's commentary team for the weekend. He's been telling Hazel Irvine on BBC One about his memories of winning the Claret Jug:

"If I saw my name at the top of the leaderboard, I could handle that. Then I saw myself sitting on a Monday at breakfast talking to the BBC, that is the thought that got me through, the visualisation.

"I was determined to win and I loved playing in the majors. You threw yourself in at the deep end and enjoyed that feeling. Playing golf on a Sunday in a major is the best feeling ever, with your stomach churning and hitting the shots wonderfully.

"You could physically feel the adrenaline draining out when it finished."

  229.

Porkmeister59: "Ex-pat in Denmark....had high hopes for Westwood but switching camps, hope Olesen doesn't fold under the pressure.."

  230. 1015:
    BIRDIES FLYING ABOUT

Aussie Aaron Baddeley has not started too badly. He has birdied the second. Rickie Fowler is motoring now, striking his third birdie of the day to move level.

  231. 1011:
Tony Jacklin, BBC Sport analyst and former Open champion

"There has been some good golf played, in this benign weather, with balls backing up on the green from the approach shots. The real challenge is to keep out of the bunkers which are very deep. Those who do, such as Snedeker, is a reason why he is 10-under. Being a hot putter is another way you can be at the top."

  232.
    Rob Hodgetts, BBC Sport

On Twitter: "Ken's like Where's Wally? In a good way. I find him on 16. The left bunker still has water in it. That'll make a good bit."

  233. 1006:

BBC Sport's Rob Hodgetts is out on the course with Ken Brown, who is filming snippets for 'Ken on the Course'. You can follow all the excitement of that on Rob's Twitter feed.

  234. 1003:
    TV COVERAGE

Live coverage of the Open Championship is under way on BBC One, HD, the BBC Red Button, online and on mobiles. I'm still here, though, for now.

  235. 1001:

Lee Westwood and Tom Watson both through nine. Neither will be happy with their rounds, with the Englishman currently on five-over-par and the American on six over.

  236.

Mile Burden on Twitter: "If the wind blows this weekend I fancy Graeme to snatch it, if it doesn't then I'm going to plump for Kuch."

  237. 0955:

Dutchman Joost Luiten, who came out first today at 08:10 BST is already half way through the course and he is not doing too badly. Birdies on the seventh and eighth has put him four-over-par.

  238.

Murali from Woking via text: "All eyes on the top three but Jason Dufner is also one to watch out for this week end. He won back to back a month ago."

  239. 0951:
    BIRDIE FOR WESTWOOD

Finally some cheer for Lee Westwood, who birdies the seventh, like he did on Thursday. I fear the damage has already been done for the Worksop man.

  240.

Sid Lazarou: "Tiger's game looks under control, I can see another solid round today. Pressure on the leaders tomorrow with Tiger in the mix!"

  241.

Derren from Plymouth via text: "Come on Tiger, you should be world Number One again, as Donald just does not deliver!"

  242. 0947:
    MOVING UP

American Rickie Fowler is the big mover of the day so far, drowning another birdie to go one-over. Korean SM Bae has struck two birdies too, but a bogey on the second hole has blotted his scorecard a little.

  243. 0942:

The last pairing of Brandt Snedeker and Adam Scott are not scheduled to be out until 15:20 BST. They're probably still asleep while others are up on the course getting their rounds under way.

Meanwhile, American Chad Campbell has dropped two shots already today, going five-over-par and Australian Brendan Jones seems like he has not woken up yet, bogeying the first.

  244. 0936:

Juvic Pagunsan, the man from the Philippines, has made a great start to his round with a birdie on the first. Playing partner Pablo Larrazabal of Spain gets through with a par.

  245.

Mark Steadman in Cumbria via text: "Tiger looks menacing. You just knew that bunker shot on the 18th was going in. You need a of bit of luck in this game."

  246. 0930:
    WATSON FALTERING

Horrendous stuff for the 62-year-old Tom Watson. Double bogeys on both the fifth and sixth sends him tumbling down the board, and is now on seven-over-par, having started the day on three-over.

  247.

Matthew in Scotland via text: "Every major Luke Donald is pinned as one of the favourites, why can he never deliver, he's not the best in the world until he wins one."

Michael in Northern Ireland via text: "Getting fed up with this run of 15 different major winners! In Tiger we trust!"

  248. 0927:
    BOGEY FOR BRADLEY

Keegan Bradley, winner of the PGA Championship in 2011, has not learnt from yesterday's mistake. He has bogeyed the third hole again, which won't help his chances of moving up the leaderboard at all.

  249.

Ryan Tee on Twitter: "Got a feeling today Rory may have something to say about today! +2 can see him being on -3 by end of day."

  250. 0922:

England Ross Fisher is out, along with Korean KJ Choi. Solid starts for both, draining the first hole in three to par. The American pairing of Gary Woodland and Charles Howell III do the same, as the players come filtering out of the clubhouse at 10-minute intervals.

  251. 0917:
    GET INVOLVED

So, how do we think today's action will unfold then? Is Brandt Snedeker the real deal and up there to stay, or can Tiger claw back the four-shot deficit? Is there a surprise package?

Let me know your thoughts. I am on tweets and texts duty all day, so will be monitoring your views. Get me on Twitter @ShamoonHafez, using the hashtag #bbcgolf or text me on 81111. Oh, and please remember to put your name on those texts.

  252. 0912:
    WESTWOOD DROPS ANOTHER

Fair to say, this is turning into a bit of a disastrous morning for Lee Westwood, who drops shots on consecutive holes to fall to five-over. Colin Montgomerie won't be happy, as Westwood was one of Monty's tips to win the championship this year.

He is in the company of John Daly as the American has bogeyed two of his first three holes.

  253. 0906:
    FOWLER WITH A BIRDIE

The first birdie of the day goes to American Rickie Fowler, sporting the facial look of Captain Jack Sparrow, and he moves to one-under-par.

Veteran Tom Watson is not to be outdone, scoring a birdie of his own to go back to level for the day.

  254. 0902:

Last year's champion Darren Clarke failed to make the cut and so relinquishes his hold on the Claret Jug. Another biggie, Phil Mickelson, who finished second in 2011, also failed to progress having finished on a dismal +11.

Clarke's fellow countryman Rory McIlroy, currently on two-over and heading out at 10:20 BST, all but ended his chances of success in the championship this year after a 75 yesterday.

He was still optimistic of his chance though, stating: "Obviously Snedeker is a little bit ahead at the minute, but if I can get back to minus three, minus four going into Sunday I'd still have a great chance."

The Northern Irishman is going to need a perfect round of golf today, then!

  255. 0853:
    DROPPED SHOTS ALL ROUND

    What is going on here?!

Having birdied the first hole yesterday, the exuberant John Daly has today come out and had a disappointing start, dropping a shot on the first.

Tom Watson has dropped a shot on the second and Lee Westwood on the third. Not the start that any of the early guys would have wanted.

  256. 0848:

Woods is definitely looking like a rejuvenated man after all of his well-publicised problems. So far, he has looked focused with a determination to win his first major in more than four years.

Much like tennis star Roger Federer, who was written off after a barren spell to come back at Wimbledon 2012 and silence all his critics, Woods will be trying to silence the doubters who feel he is past his best.

Form is temporary, class is permanent which is why you would not bet against him to secure his 15th major title.

  257. 0844:
WESTWOOD AND WATSON PAR THE FIRST

"Well if it wasn't result enough to make the cut, I get a game with Tom Watson in the morning too!" tweeted Lee Westwood last night.

The pair are out for their third rounds in glorious conditions, and there are no dramas for either, as they par the first hole.

The sun is shining, there is little wind and not a cloud in sight.

  258. 0840:

Aussie Adam Scott is on leader Snedeker's tail, though, one shot behind on nine-under-par. He stood on the verge of history in his opening round when he needed a birdie to set the first ever round of 62 in a major, but it was not to be as he bogeyed the 18th and had to settle for 64 to equal the course record.

Oh, and there is a certain Tiger Woods lurking in the background too, four shots off the lead on six-under. His superb chip for birdie on the final hole yesterday got him roaring again, and Snedeker will definitely need to be on his game to halt his fellow American's onslaught.

  259. 0837:
    LUITEN DROPS A SHOT

The first man out today is Dutchman Joost Luiten, and it is not a good start, as he bogeys the first to go four-over.

  260. 0834:

So, here we are. Into the weekend at the 141st Open Championship, this year being contested at Royal Lytham & St Annes. This is where all the top boys want to be and it is a virtually unknown American who sits at the top of the pile.

Snedeker, who on previous three Open visits has failed to make the cut, has ripped through the field so far without dropping a shot. Our man at Royal Lytham, Rob Hodgetts gives his low-down on Snedeker's

While he seems to be the man to catch, he needs to be aware of the fact that only 17 out of the last 44 men have gone on to lift the Claret Jug having led at the halfway mark.
