Win over Westwood drained McIlroy

Rory McIlroy says his WGC Match Play semi-final win over Lee Westwood left him "mentally and emotionally" tired for the final against Hunter Mahan, which he lost.

McIlroy beat his former stablemate Westwood 3&1 in the semi-final but struggled over the front nine in the decider in Arizona as Mahan clinched a 2&1 victory.

The final defeat prevented McIlroy from claiming the world number one spot from Luke Donald but the Northern Irishman believes the top ranking "is hopefully inevitable if I keep playing golf the way I am at the moment".
