-
1435:

-
1433:
But do keep an eye on bbc.co.uk/f1 throughout the day to find all the analysis from today's events plus interviews with the drivers and video highlights of the action.
-
1431:
I'll be back at 12:00 BST to warm you up for the 2012 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Lights go out at 13:00, but we'll have plenty to get through before that, including any developments from overnight.
-
1428:
Another cracking qualifying session, but it's that man Fernando Alonso - our championship leader - who is on pole position for the second race in a row. Here's Andrew Benson's report. Can the 30-year-old double world champion win his third race of the season - and become the first man to do so on Sunday afternoon? You'll have to join me to find out.
-
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who qualified seventh: "We did our last laps first and then the track got better and better and I guess the other guys were able to post quicker times after that. The track was drying so we would have got better if we had one more lap, but it was like driving on ice for us."
-
1423:
A good day for the German drivers on home soil, with three drivers in the top five - Sebastian Vettel (second), Michael Schumacher (fourth) and Nico Hulkenberg (fifth).
-
Force India on Twitter: "Superb job by @NicoHulkenberg & @pauldirestaf1 who qualify P5 and P9 in the wet conditions at Hockenheim. One happy team this afternoon."
-

Adeel Ejaz on Twitter: "I never knew Fernando Alonso was a fish! Can this guy drive in wet! Out performing the car again!"
-
More from Mark Webber: "We have a car that is strong in all conditions but there are many quick cars out there. It is never ideal to shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties here and there but these things happen."
-
Red Bull driver Mark Webber, who starts third: "The session was tricky for all of us, dodgy conditions. We could have done better here and there. We could have stopped [like Alonso], but we're third, which is eighth with the penalty for a gearbox change, and looking to come forward tomorrow."
-
More from Sebastian Vettel: "For tomorrow, you can't rule out McLaren, they've been quick in qualifying all weekend. In the last part of qualifying, I don't know what went wrong, they were a bit far behind. They will be quick. Lotus have been quick in races. It's still extremely close. We are consistent and able to finish in the top three which is the key, so we try to do our best tomorrow and see what the weather does."
-
Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel, who starts second: "In these conditions it was tricky, you can lose the car a bit in the rivers, but I think we had the car today to put on pole, we need to look at the strategy Alonso touched on, maybe that was better but in these conditions it is a bit of a lottery. Fortunately we didn't lose the car and we are on the front row which should be good. I am starting on the inside as well so we will see what happens."
-
More from Fernando Alonso: "It has been a strange weekend for conditions on the track, but the car was performing well in both conditions so we will see what happens tomorrow."
-
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, who starts on pole: "Sometimes it's good to check the circuit conditions as we did in Q3. Going into Turn 6 was not easy for anybody, a lot of aquaplaning, but everything went well for us. We made a good stategy call doing a pit stop in Q3 so we could have fresher tyres in the last minute. I think that helped us a lot to improve the lap time."
-
1410:
Time to hear what the top three have to say in the press conference...
-
1408:
Sebastian Vettel studies the timing screens along with countryman Michael Schumacher as the pair wait to be weighed. Vettel then heads back into the pit lane to meet team-mate Mark Webber and pole-sitter Fernando Alonso for the obligatory post-qualifying top three photo.
-
1406:
Jenson Button outqualifies McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton for the first time this season in seventh, with Paul di Resta and Kimi Raikkonen completing the top 10.
-
Ferrari on Twitter: "Great pole position. A fantastic drive from Fernando, once again!"
-
1404:
Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber finish second and third respectively ahead of a strong showing from Michael Schumacher in fourth. It's a Force India career best fifth for Nico Hulkenberg with Pastor Maldonado a decent sixth.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"I think the other drivers would also give Fernando Alonso a round of applause. That is a sizeable gap in very difficult conditions."
-
1403:
An incredible lap from Fernando Alonso for his second pole of the season and second in succession. The Spaniard finishes four tenths quicker than anyone else in such tricky conditions. Remarkable.
-
1402:
*FERNANDO ALONSO TAKES POLE POSITION FOR THE GERMAN GRAND PRIX*
-
1401:
Fernando Alonso goes even fastest, shaving 0.25 seconds off his best lap. Is there anything this man can't do? He's a machine.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Button looks like he is struggling. It is a better middle sector but his first sector was slightly down so it won't be good enough for pole."
-
1400:
Michael Schumacher can only manage fourth as he crosses the line ahead of Sebastian Vettel who slots into second alongside Fernando Alonso.
-
1359:
Mark Webber goes quicker of all but Fernando Alonso is on a mighty lap. The Spaniard is absolutely flying...and he GOES QUICKEST by seven tenths of a second. Wow.
-
Jenson Button's race engineer on team radio: "This is a much better and hotter set of tyres. We can do a good job here."
-
1358:
Sebastian Vettel eclipses Michael Schumacher's leading time by one tenth to go quickest of all with Lewis Hamilton third, Fernando Alonso fourth and Paul di Resta fifth.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"Fernando Alonso has just come in for a new set of extreme wets and it is good to get back out there with heat on the tyre. They lose a bit of temperature after a few laps and coming back out on a new tyre gives you that bit more grip."
-
1357:
Lewis Hamilton goes fastest now but the times are tumbling. Michael Schumacher crosses the line to go 1.7 seconds quicker than anyone else. It's going to be a case of last man standing in the battle of pole.
-
1356:PIT STOP
So Vettel leads from Alonso, Di Resta, Hulkenberg, Button, Schumacher, Hamilton, Webber, Maldonado and Raikkonen. Alonso and Raikkonen decide to pit for a new set of full wet tyres.
-
1355:
Sebastian Vettel is now our leader, one tenth quicker than Fernando Alonso. Great laps from the Force India boys. Nico Hulkenberg is third and Paul di Resta fifth, split by Jenson Button who improves on his second timed lap.
-
1354:
Jenson Button goes quickest, but he is soon usurped by McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton. The track is improving all the time because Michael Schumacher goes quickest and then Fernando Alonso.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"That was a very scary moment for Nico Hulkenberg and a scary place to lose control. A clear message to [race director] Charlie Whiting of the effect of standing water."
-
Michael Schumacher team radio: "It's going to be very difficult to stay on track. There is a lot of aquaplaning."
-
1352:
BBC weatherman on Twitter: "Rain soon to clear through; a window of dry weather (but wet track) now before further shower likely after Q3."
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"The rain has stopped here in the pit-lane, so it is opposite to the last session. The track will get better as it goes on and it will become intermediates weather two or three laps into this session."
-
1350:
The McLaren boys are out nice and early, sensibly choosing the full wet tyres for their first run but further behind Nico Hulkenberg has a massive moment when he hits some standing water and aquaplanes, sending his Force India spinning off into the gravel. The German recovers and rejoins the track.
-
1349:FINAL QUALIFYING STARTS
This is it. Ten cars, one pole position. Let the games begin...
-
1348:
Great job by Force India getting both cars into the top 10 shoot-out. McLaren and Red Bull the only other teams to do that. Strong lap from Michael Schumacher, too, who was on the cusp of getting knocked out in Q1 only to go second quickest in the wet in Q2.
-
Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen gets on the radio to vent his fury:: "It's again Perez, blocking me on my timed lap. Unbelievable. Unbelievable."
-
1346:IN
1) Lewis Hamilton 2) Michael Schumacher 3) Sebastian Vettel 4) Fernando Alonso 5) Jenson Button 6) Pastor Maldonado 7) Mark Webber 8) Nico Hulkenberg 9) Paul di Resta 10) Kimi Raikkonen
-
1345:OUT
Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Kamui Kobayashi, Felipe Massa, Romain Grosjean, Bruno Senna and Nico Rosberg
-
1343:SECOND QUALIFYING ENDS
*LEWIS HAMILTON FINISHES FASTEST IN THE SECOND PART OF QUALIFYING FOR THE GERMAN GRAND PRIX*
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Felipe Massa has not looked comfortable in any of the conditions we have seen this weekend and he is not going to make it through to the next part of qualifying."
-
1341:
The conditions have got worse and those on full wets can't get near the times set on the intermediates. That means that those in the drop zone - Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Kamui Kobayashi, Felipe Massa, Romain Grosjean, Bruno Senna and Nico Rosberg - have little chance of making the top 10.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"Nico Rosberg is back out on full wets. Will he find a better time on the new tyres? He won't be too worried about keeping them because it is forecast to be dry tomorrow, so it is just about getting everything out of those tyres now."
-
1338:
Nico Rosberg has blinked and headed into the pits for a set of full wet tyres. The German is in the drop zone and has around six minutes to get out and lift himself into the top 10.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"The spray is one of the biggest issues, you just cannot get a clear visual of where the standing water is on the circuit."
-
1337:
Lewis Hamilton looks mighty in these conditions as he hooks up a brilliant lap to go seven tenths quicker than anyone else - 1:37.365. Michael Schumacher stays second ahead of Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.
-
1336:
Felipe Massa, Romain Grosjean, Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Bruno Senna, Kamui Kobayashi and Nico Rosberg are currently in the drop zone.
-
1335:
Michael Schumacher is one of the last to leave the pit lane and gets himself some clear air. It's a smart move because he goes quickest of all by half-a-second. The times keep dropping as the drivers build heat in the tyres to get them switched on.
-
1333:
A horrible moment for the Ferrari team when Felipe Massa makes a mistake, wiggles back onto track just as team-mate Fernando Alonso catches him. The Spaniard gets baulked by the Brazilian who is struggling for grip big time. Even so, Alonso still sets the second fastest time. What a machine.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Jenson Button was struggling for traction on Turn Four and it shows how difficult it is to switch on the tyres in these conditions. It is like slipping on ice out there. They are trying to keep off the rubber that was put down in the first session because it just becomes slick with the rain on top of it."
-
1331:
Jenson Button is sliding around all over the place but he gets the first time on the board - a 1:39.010 but that's beaten almost immediately by Pastor Maldonado.
-
1330:
The rain is really coming down now and Felipe Massa is told that he'll have three laps on this run. "Stay calm because the rain will only get heavier," says his race engineer Rob Smedley.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"It is frantic in the pit lane, everyone is trying to get tyres on their car. It is definitely too wet now for dry weather tyres."
-
1328:SECOND QUALIFYING STARTS
We're away in the second part of qualifying and McLaren's Jenson Button is quick out of the blocks on the intermediate tyre. Smart move. The best laps may well come at the start of the session, especially if the rain intensifies...
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"A massive clap of thunder has just shaken Hockenheim"
-
1327:
The plastic bin bag-style macs are coming out and up go the umbrellas. It's raining at Hockenheim, people.
-
1326:IN
1) Raikkonen 2) Perez 3) Rosberg 4) Alonso 5) Maldonado 6) Hamilton 7) Massa 8) Hulkenberg 9) Di Resta 10) Vettel 11) Senna 12) Kobayashi 13) Webber 14) Button 15) Ricciardo 16) Grosjean 17) Schumacher
-
Ferrari on Twitter: "Rain is getting very close..."
-
1324:OUT
Jean-Eric Vergne, Heikki Kovalainen, Vitaly Petrov, Charles Pic, Timo Glock, Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan.
-
1323:FIRST QUALIFYING ENDS
*KIMI RAIKKONEN FINISHES FASTEST IN THE FIRST PART OF QUALIFYING FOR THE GERMAN GRAND PRIX*
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Schumacher only just needed to make it through to next part but that was incredibly close. There will have been a lot of German fans holding their breath as he crossed the line."
-
1321:
And he's makes it, just...The German clocks the 17th fastest time, 0.05 seconds fastest than Jean-Eric Vergne who gets bumped into 18th and out of qualifying. Lucky boy.
-
1320:
Michael Schumacher is down on the 17th fastest time in the first two sectors on his final flying lap. He needs a stellar final sector if he is to avoid becoming the first big casualty of the day...
-
1319:
Mark Webber's first flyer is disappointing and he can only manage 15th so he'll need to go again. That drops home favourite Michael Schumacher into the drop zone. Are we in for a shock in Q1?
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"I am seeing some activity in the McLaren garage. Lewis Hamilton ran wide at Turn One and a mechanic is fixing the leading edge on the floor. Hopefully that won't cause him any aerodynamic issues."
-
1317:
Romain Grosjean can breathe a sigh of relief. He pops his Lotus up into 12th, which drops Sergio Perez into the drop zone. But the Sauber is on a lap and goes second quickest overall which drops Mark Webber into the drop zone. The Australian has work to do.
-
1315:
Mark Webber has headed out on the soft tyre, as has Fernando Alonso. They are currently 15th and ninth respectively. Looking at the drop zone, Romain Grosjean is the man under pressure. The Lotus driver is 18th ahead of Kovalainen, Petrov, Pic, Glock, De la Rosa and Karthikeyan.
-
Sauber on Twitter: "Most cars in the garage. We observe the next steps of the others and keep on looking at the weather radar."
-
1313:
Nico Hulkenberg hauls himself out of the drop zone with a good lap on the soft tyres that puts him second overall. Moments later, Kimi Raikkonen delivers an absolute corker, nailing a mid-1m15 on the medium tyre. Sensational stuff from the Finn.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"I would say the top half dozen will be okay, I wouldn't be rushing for the soft tyres. I'd keep them for Q3."
-
1311:
No sign of the predicted rain yet, but the clouds overhead look ominious. Lewis Hamilton's team tell him that they think he's done enough to get into Q2, so he gets out of the car with eight minutes remaining and the team get on with preparing the car for the next session. That's one confident man.
-
1310:
With 10 minutes gone and 10 minutes remaining, Nico Hulkenberg, Heikki Kovalainen, Vitaly Petrov, Pedro de la Rosa, Charles Pic, Timo Glock and Narain Karthikeyan are currently in the drop zone.
-
1308:
Lewis Hamilton is absolutely flying. The McLaren driver is doing a super job at the minute, shaving another tenth off his best to extend his lead at the top. Kamui Kobayashi has nailed a good'un too to go second, splitting the two McLarens.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Felipe Massa has looked a little uncomfortable on this circuit in practice. He got his act together at Silverstone but so far he is looking like an accident waiting to happen. We don't want that to happen obviously but he is showing signs of being uncomfortable around this circuit."
-
1306:
Lewis Hamilton makes no mistake on his next lap, setting a personal best in sector two and a personal best in the third sector to go quickest. Moments later, his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button slots into second, 0.12 seconds off the pace. Great driving from both.
-
1305:
No he can't. The McLaren driver backs off after making a mistake and saves the tyres ready for another lap. Hamilton is currently eighth fastest, half-a-second slower than pace-setter Fernando Alonso.
-
1303:
Jenson Button now takes top spot with a high 1m16, before Fernando Alonso sneaks ahead by 0.03 seconds. The Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher are third and fourth respectively. Lewis Hamilton goes purple on his timed lap...can he go quicker?
-
1302:
Pastor Maldonado sets the early pace with a 1m18.317, one tenth quicker than Nico Hulkenberg in the Force India.
-
1300:FIRST QUALIFYING STARTS
And we're away in qualifying! With rain predicted, it's no surprise to see the cars pile out of their garages and out onto the track in order to get a banker lap in nice and early. BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson thinks drivers will need a high 1m16 to get into the top 17.
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"It hasn't actually rained since the downpour that ruined the end of practice, but looking at the sky, you can see what BBC weatherman Ian Fergusson means when he says showers are "inevitable". There are patches of blue but plenty of big grey things too."
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"You have to get out because the rain can come any time. Most of the cars are going out on the medium tyre. It will be good for three or four laps and then they will look and see what happens."
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"They do two races a year here in DTM so despite it being only Paul Di Resta's second season in Formula 1 he raced a lot here in DTM so he probably has as much experience as Michael Schumacher out there!"
-
1255:
Just five minutes to go until the pit lane opens its doors. So we've got a 20-minute session coming up which will see the slowest seven drivers get knocked out. Vitaly Petrov, Pedro de la Rosa, Narain Karthikeyan, Timo Glock and Charles Pic are the only drivers yet to make it past Q1 in 2012.
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"An update on the Bernie Ecclestone situation. I mentioned earlier that people were wondering whether he would turn up here because of the ongoing situation around the conviction for eight years of a banker for taking a multi-million-pound bribe from F1's boss. There are reports Ecclestone could be the next target of the German authorities, but I was told just now that Ecclestone was 'definitely' coming here on Saturday, but that he had 'a couple of other things to do first'. Meanwhile, senior figures at the top teams say that, in his position, they wouldn't come. 'It's enemy territory,' as one of them put it."
-
1250:FORM GUIDE
2012 pole-sitters:
Australia - Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) Race finish 3rd
Malaysia - Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) Race finish 3rd
China - Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) Race finish 1st
Bahrain - Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) Race finish 1st
Spain - Pastor Maldonado (Williams) Race finish 1st
Monaco - Mark Webber (Red Bull) Race finish 1st
Canada - Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) Race finish 4th
Europe - Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) Race finish DNF
Britain - Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) Race finish 2nd
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"The message from McLaren after practice was don't be too concerned by Jenson Button's apparent lack of pace. He was running with a heavy fuel load when he set his 'fastest' time and did not complete a lap at the end before the rain fell. The team are confident that they are in decent shape here with both cars - although McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale did admit that while they feel their upgrades are a step forward they're probably not enough to completely close the gap to Red Bull and Ferrari on race pace."
-
1247:
BBC F1 weatherman Ian Fergusson has some big news on the weather front. Moderate to heavy rain showers are now looking "inevitable" for qualifying. Let the chaos begin...
-
1244:FAST FACT
Lewis Hamilton has been 0.44 seconds quicker on average than McLaren team-mate Jenson Button across the nine qualifying sessions so far this season.

Peter Abatan on Twitter: "Does Jenson Button's problem have more to do with what is going on in his mind, rather than the performance of the car?"
-
1241:
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was fastest in final practice ahead of Lewis Hamilton of McLaren and Sauber's Sergio Perez. Red Bull's Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were fifth and sixth with Jenson Button down in 24th and last after complaining of a lack of front-end grip.
-
1238:
The session gets under way at 13:00 BST and will be split into three segments. The first lasts 20 minutes and will see seven drivers knocked out. The next lasts 15 minutes and sees another seven shown the door. That leaves 10 drivers to fight it out for pole in a 10-minute shoot-out. Timing will be crucial because as we've seen so far this weekend, the rain can fall at any time...
-
Force India on Twitter: "Sunshine & showers are the story of the day in Hockenheim. FP3 gave us some valuable dry track time so at least we have some long run data."
-
WEATHER UPDATE
BBC F1 weatherman Ian Fergusson "Further showers on way from NW, likely arrival by start of quali, albeit their intensity uncertain at this juncture."
-
Red Bull boss Christian Horner speaking on BBC Radio 5 live: "It's important that we start beating Fernando [Alonso] on a regular basis. He's been so consistent, he keeps finishing races, he keeps scoring points. He has shown great form in recent races so for us, it's important that we keep chipping into the lead that he has."
-
Fernando Alonso on Twitter: "It seems it may rain, so we have to be ready for anything."
-
1233:
The Hockenheimring is a fantastic circuit that may have lost some of its charm after getting cut in half back in 2002, but still retains some beautiful corners which provide plenty of overtaking opportunities. Qualifying, then, should be a barrel of laughs, especially when the heavens decide to open...
-
1230:
Hello all, who's up for a dose of full-throttle, no-nonsense, spine-tingling Formula 1 craziness, probably on a soaking wet track?
-
1110:
Here's Andrew Benson's final practice report. That's just about it for me for now. I'm off for a spot of lunch and a stretch of the legs before returning at 12:30 BST to begin building up to qualifying. With rain forecast, anything could happen. See you in a bit!

And here's 1-12:
1) Alonso 2) Hamilton 3) Perez 4) Raikkonen 5) Webber 6) Vettel 7) Maldonado 8) Massa 9) Kobayashi 10) Senna 11) Grosjean 12) Hulkenberg
-
1106:
Here's how they finished 13-24:
13) Di Resta 14) Ricciardo 15) Schumacher 16) Vergne 17) Rosberg 18) Kovalainen 19) Petrov 20) De la Rosa 21) Glock 22) Pic 23) Karthikeyan 24) Button
-
1104:
Plenty of running for the teams with everyone apart from Charles Pic getting into double figures, with most completing more than 20 laps and running both medium and soft tyres.
-
1102:
So Fernando Alonso tops the times, 0.77 seconds clear of Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren. A strong showing from Sergio Perez in third and Kimi Raikkonen fourth. Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg finish down in 15th and 17th respectively with Jenson Button 24th and last.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"If these conditions do continue it will be like Silverstone. It will be about teams making the right decisions for qualifying. I hope we don't end up with the same problem we had at Silverstone where the session was stopped and that scuppers the good decisions some teams make."
-
1100:CHEQUERED FLAG
*FERNANDO ALONSO IS FASTEST IN FINAL PRACTICE FOR THE GERMAN GRAND PRIX*
-
1059:
It's absolutely bucketing it down at Hockenheim now. It's like we're in Malaysia in monsoon season. A biblical downpour. Turn One looks like a lake and there are rivers forming all over the track. Imagine if this happens mid-way through qualifying. That would certainly spice up the session.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"The Red Bulls have stepped forward but this weather which has just come down now means anything can happen. Fernando Alonso is a wily old dog. Give him an opportunity and he'll take it with both hands."
-
1057:
This session is effectively over as the rain has intensified. Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg back off and cruise back to the pits. They'll be keen not to make a mistake like Michael Schumacher did yesterday when he put his Mercedes in the barriers in the stadium section.
-
1055:
Michael Schumacher improves to 15th overall, 1.252 seconds off the pace with Jenson Button propping up the timesheets in his McLaren. The Briton is out on the soft tyres, but he's made two mistakes already and it looks like the spits of rain have put paid to any more improvements in this session.
-
1052:
I can see a few people popping on their hoods and bringing out the umbrellas and BBC Radio 5 live pit lane reporter Jennie Gow confirms that big drops of rain are falling at Hockenheim.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"I have just been watching Jenson Button in the McLaren garage and he has more front wing on than Lewis Hamilton. The front wing is maxed out on Jenson's car, which is a bit strange and I think there is something more fundamental going on here as that is never Jenson's style of driving."
-
1050:
Felipe Massa is really pushing that Ferrari. He first locks the front tyres at the hairpin and then runs way wide at Turn 12 coming into the stadium section, bouncing across the grass and gravel.
-
1048:
Michael Schumacher is dead last at the moment. The German has a best of 1:21.882 from his 19 laps which is 5.868 seconds off the pace. I wonder what is going on there...
-
BBC Radio 5 live analyst Jaime Alguersuari"I see the Ferraris are fast, McLaren are fast and obviously the Red Bulls are. There are still a couple of drivers to put on the option tyre and clock a better time, so we shall see."
-
1046:
The rain is coming, people. Dark clouds are hovering over the forest which engulfs this legendary circuit. They may not hit in time to impact on this session, but qualifying is only two hours away....
-
1044:
The new front wing assembly might have done the trick because Fernando Alonso leaps ahead of Lewis Hamilton at the top of the timesheets by 0.077 seconds. Sergio Perez improves, too, closing to within 0.188 seconds of the leading pace in third.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"I am in the Ferrari garage and Massa, who has had an issue with understeer, has just come in. Alonso is having a new front wing assembly put on his car. They have done them back-to-back and they have also changed the tyres. One thing about doing a back-to-back is you have to change things as quickly as possible."
-

Nathan Tomlinson on Twitter: "If Raikkonen can get the Lotus working to its optimum performance this weekend, I think he might be the dark horse to win this."
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"One of the big talking points this weekend is whether Bernie Ecclestone will turn up at this race, given the legal controversy swirling around him as a result of the Gribkowsky bribery case. A Munich court jailed the ex-banker for eight and a half years for accepting a $44m (£28m) bribe from Ecclestone and reports here say German prosecutors are preparing to launch an official investigation into the F1 boss's role in the affair. Senior figures in F1 not only think Ecclestone would be very brave to turn up here but are questioning whether he can continue to survive in his current role as head of the commercial rights holders."
-
BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter Jennie Gow"The Marussia engineers have managed to change the engine over on Charles Pic's car and they have just fired it up to make sure that the air leak is now sorted. Fingers crossed Charles will be out very shortly."
-
1039:
And now Lewis Hamilton is our new leader, but interestingly his lap was set on the medium compound tyre. The McLaren driver clocks 1:16.091, 0.033 seconds quicker than Alonso.
-
1037:
So it looks like that was Ferrari's lower-fuel soft-tyre run. Fernando Alonso was half a second quicker than anyone else. Felipe Massa was sixth tenths slower on his run, but we've just seen a replay of the Brazilian getting held up by Nico Rosberg for a sequence of corners. Massa waves his arm in disgust...
-
BBC Radio 5 live analyst Jaime Alguersuari"Nico Hulkenberg has a really good balance out there. He has quite good rear grip on slow speed. On high speed the car is pitching a little bit but overall it looks really good and consistent. It is another great package for Force India. They are doing a great job and I believe they will have a good season like they did last year and will be able to target the big teams."
-
1035:
And as I hit return on that last entry, Fernando Alonso sets the fastest time of the weekend on the soft compound tyre.

1033:
The sun is shining at Hockenheim but Ferrari are saying they have brought forward their second run because of the threat of rain. Watch this space.
-
1032:FAST FACT
Michael Schumacher has retired five times in nine races this season. That's as many retirements as he made in the whole of 2011.
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"Friday was a bad day for Michael Schumacher, who lost the car at the Mobil 1 Kurve coming into the stadium - one of the fastest corners on the track - and smashed into the barriers. He admitted the accident was his fault because he was 'not concentrating'. Apart from the hefty repair bill incurred, Mercedes were encouraged by their performance on Friday. 'I'm generally quite pleased,' said Schumacher's team-mate Nico Rosberg. 'I've got a good idea of the balance wet or dry and I am optimistic for the weekend whatever weather comes.' The only cloud on Rosberg's horizon - apart from the ones in the sky - is a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change."
-
1030:
Nico Rosberg is sat in the garage with his Mercedes up on the jacks while his team get to work on his car. "Little too much engine braking, if you could take a look at that," he said earlier on team radio.
-

-
1025:
As we approach the half-way point of the session, everyone has set a timed lap apart from Charles Pic who is sat at the back of the Marussia garage watching his team desperately try to change an engine before the session ends.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"I am outside McLaren watching them do a bit of a set-up change on Jenson Button's car. The fuel rigs are on and they are changing the fuel load of the car, but it will be interesting to see what tyres they put back on."
-
1024:
It's a battle between Williams and Red Bull at the moment with Sebastian Vettel on top with a 1:16.652, 0.012 quicker than Pastor Maldonado with Mark Webber third and Bruno Senna fourth. The McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are down in 14th and 17th respectively.
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"Hamilton and Button may have been cautious about their form in Friday practice, but Sebastian Vettel was impressed by the times they did in setting the pace in the first session, which was mostly dry. 'McLaren looked very competitive this morning, no doubt, we couldn't go that pace,' the Red Bull driver said. 'But we were not entirely happy this morning. It's a Friday - it's difficult to draw conclusions. They looked good on Friday in Silverstone and their weekend turned out not that good.'"
-
1022:
Pastor Maldonado now goes quickest, on the medium compound tyre, as he breaks into the 1m16s. Mark Webber tries to respond, but he stays second quickest despite improving on his last lap.
-
1020:
Times starting to come down now, Bruno Senna going quickest in the Williams before Mark Webber deposes him with a 1:17.331 in the Red Bull.
-
BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter Jennie Gow"When they fired Charles Pic's engine up, they found an air leak in the engine, meaning they have had to change the unit. It is the second time in a row they have had to change the engine but they are hopeful to get out in this session."
-
1018:
Marussia confirm they have had to change the engine on Charles Pic's car, which will mean a 10-place grid drop.
-
1016:DID YOU KNOW?
German drivers - of which there are five on the grid - have won 24% of the points on offer so far in 2012 - 215 out of a possible 909.
-
1014:
Timo Glock, in the Marussia, goes fourth fastest with Pedro de la Rosa in sixth place in the HRT. Enjoy those lofty positions while they last lads.
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"There was a lot of attention on Lotus on Friday as they tried out their own, different, version of the straight-line speed boosting device used by Mercedes all year. Lotus's device channels air from ducts above the driver's head up a new central rear wing pillar to 'stall' the rear wing and make the car faster in a straight line. Trackside operations director Alan Permane said that although it had shown 'encouraging signs', the team would not race it in Germany but that it would likely reappear in practice in Hungary next weekend."
-
Marussia on Twitter: "We can indeed report that Maria De Villota has now left hospital in the UK and returned to Spain."
-
1012:
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson reports that Ferrari are currently bleeding the brakes on Fernando Alonso's car and adds that he is surprised by the times drivers are setting at the moment. Aside from Nico Rosberg's time, everyone else is lapping around four seconds slower than Jenson Button pace-setting time on Friday.
-
1010:
Nico Rosberg is our new leader, smashing Kimi Raikkonen's previous best by three seconds with a 1:17.892. Lewis Hamilton improves to fourth, three seconds off the pace.
-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"It is a bit of a blow for Mark Webber having a five-place grid penalty but if you had to suffer it at any circuit you might choose this one. It is possible to overtake."
-
Ferrari on Twitter: "Showers are quickly developing. Not on the track during the next 30 minutes, said Meteo France."
-
1008:
The Ferrari boys have headed out, done their install lap and then headed straight back to the pits as always. The Italian team like a plan - and they stick to it.
-
1006:
Hamilton's first flying lap is nothing to write home about. The Briton clocks 1:22.272, two tenths quicker than McLaren team-mate Jenson Button, but it's only good enough for eighth.
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"It appears as if there may be ructions under way at Toro Rosso, Red Bull's feeder team. Their experienced and widely respected technical director Giorgio Ascanelli is not here. Officially, he is 'on holiday' but there are reports he has left the team and may end up at Ferrari, where he last worked about 10 years ago. Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost was cagey on the subject. 'There is confidentiality between the parties. That's all I can say,' he said. Which obviously sounds like it is a lot more serious than a vacation."

Darren Agnew on Twitter: "Lewis to get pole and also take the win.. Let's hope McLaren get some good testing done, off their upgrades in this 3rd session."
-
1004:
Kimi Raikkonen is our early pace-setter this morning, clocking 1:20.927 in his Lotus, before running very wide at Turn One on his next lap. The Finn is really pushing early doors. Lewis Hamilton has just started his first flying lap - what can he do?
-
1002:
There's no waiting around today with the drivers gagging to get out and put some mileage on their machines after Friday's washout. Kamui Kobayashi, Jean-Eric Vergne and Timo Glock are among the first drivers out of the pits...
-
1000:GO! GO! GO!
The pit lane has opened its doors and we're up and running!
-
0955:
The BBC Radio 5 live crew of Jonathan Legard, Jaime Alguersuari, Gary Anderson and Jennie Gow are up and running on this very website. You can click the link at the top right of the page.
-
0950:
Not long until the session starts now and I'm pleased to say the sun is shining at Hockenheim. There were times on Friday when I thought I'd never see the sun again. With little running on the softer compound tyre, expect the teams to be very busy collecting data this morning...
-
Caterham F1 on Twitter: "In actual good weather news, tomorrow looks like it's going to be warm (22C) & sunny. All day. Hmmm, no chickens are being counted yet."
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"McLaren have the biggest upgrades of anyone here - and not before time, according to the drivers, after their disappointing form in the last two races - but the wet weather on Friday meant they were unable to judge how effective the new sidepods, brake ducts and diffuser were. Both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button said they were confident it was a step forward but will hope to get more data on it on Saturday morning."
-
0947:
While we're talking about grid penalties, it's worth mentioning Nico Rosberg and Romain Grosjean will both take a five-place hit, too after changing their gearboxes. Lotus found an issue with Grosjean's after the British Grand Prix, while Mercedes changed Rosberg's after practice on Friday.
-
0945:
Mark Webber will take a five-place grid penalty after the team changed his gearbox. It's obviously frustrating for the Aussie, but let's not forget this track offers plenty of overtaking opportunities and Webber has showed all season, including last time out at Silverstone when he passed Fernando Alonso for victory, that he's more than capable of doing it...
-
0942:
I'm hearing that Red Bull broke their curfew last night, but they used one of their four 'jokers' which their allowed per season which means they escape penalty. But there is some bad news, particularly for Australian fans out there...
-
Force India on Twitter: "Good morning from a bright and sunny Hockenheim. No sign of the rain that we were expecting - as yet!"

-
BBC weatherman Simon King: "During the qualifying period there is a moderate risk of the showers affecting proceedings but as always with showers, it'll be a case of keeping a close eye on the rainfall radar. Gentle winds again with a maximum temperature of 20C."
-
0936:
Yep, former world champion Jenson Button led the way in morning practice on Friday but he was in all sorts of bother when the rain came down later in the afternoon. "Trying to get these wet tyres working is one of our big issues," said Button. Pastor Maldonado timed his lap to perfection to top the times before the rain returned in second practice but it was difficult to draw any meaningful conclusions in terms of performance.
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Hockenheim"After the grey skies and intermittent rain of Friday, the Rhine was glistening in the sunlight early on Saturday morning. But the forecast is for rain around lunchtime, and there is a 60% chance of a wet qualifying session. That's bad news for McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, whose car struggled in wet conditions in practice, as it has all year."
-
0933:
Welcome, one and all, to qualifying day for the German Grand Prix, this year held at Hockenheim (the event alternates with the Nurburgring). First, though, we've got one hour of practice to get through which kicks off at 10:00 BST and after Friday's washout, I suspect we'll see plenty of action from the off.
-
0930:
After the rain lashed Hockenheim on Friday, ruining any hope the teams had of testing the raft of updates they had brought to the race, and with more wet weather forecast today, we have the juicy prospect of another unpredictable qualifying session. Let's get it on.
