1625:
Right, I'm off for a lie down before the football tonight. Thanks for your company and contributions, I've had a blast and hope you have, too. It's been an epic race in what has been an epic season. I'll be back in two weeks for the big one - the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. I'll be live from 09:30 BST on Friday 6 July for first practice which will be live across the BBC. See you at the Home of Motorsport, folks. Adios amigos.
-
1620:
That's it from the boys on the BBC Red Button. Valencia has done us proud with a brilliant race that had everything from overtaking and crashes, to shock retirements and stunning drives. Here's Andrew Benson's report the video highlights which are certainly worth a watch. You can also watch a comprehensive race highlights programme on BBC Two at 22:30 BST tonight.
-
Before we go, here's a word from race winner Fernando Alonso: "This is the most emotional win of my career, it is unexpected. It is a difficult time for Spain with the economic problems, and we knew we had to give something back. The win was not in our predictions, but we enjoyed it when we did it. We were lucky with some overtaking, because the moves were risky and aggressive, but they go for you sometimes."
-
BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan"Fernando Alonso was brilliant today in a car that is good, but not amazing."

Julia Green on Twitter: "I'm not a fan of Fernando Alonso, but it was still lovely to see him win a home GP."

1614:
The TV boys have dug out some footage which shows Michael Schumacher using his DRS when yellow flags are being waved however BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson says that there's nothing in the rules that say you can't use the DRS in that situation, you just have to prove you are slowing down. Let's wait and see what happens.

Nick Sarkissian on Twitter: "I think that Sauber are due a great result, both drivers have a chance of getting a win."
-
Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen, who finished second: "I am never happy if I don't win. I had a good start but I was blocked by Maldonado and had to back off, meaning I lost a few places. There was a lot of fighting in the race. We got second place, which is not too bad, but it would have been nice for the team to get both drivers on the podium."
-
1606:
Conversely, Romain Grosjean's Lotus team-mate Kimi Raikkonen looks as if he was lamenting a retirement, rather celebrating what was a strong second...

Mark Bukumunhe on Twitter: "Did Vettel and Grosjean suffer the same engine fault? They both have Renault engines."
-
1602:
You've got to love Romain Grosjean. The man retired from second, when in with a chance of victory, and he's still smiling when doing his post-race interviews. The Frenchman showed great maturity in his drive today and appears to have the upper hand over his more decorated team-mate Kimi Raikkonen. If he keeps driving like that, he will win a race in the future.
-
Romain Grosjean, who was forced out of the race because of mechanical problems when in second, said: "The car stopped, the engine stopped and I think it was because we had an alternator problem. The race was going perfect, we had a good start and it was a good performance. I thought I would get my first win because we were looking quicker than Ferrari. I am disappointed I didn't get the chance to overtake."
-
BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan"I think Romain Grosjean now has the measure of Kimi Raikkonen. He is a fine young driver and I think he could have been the one to secure victory today."

Dan Hill on Twitter: "Lewis was robbed today, Maldonado acted like a rookie. Hamilton to win Silverstone!"

-
Force India's Nico Hulkenberg: "P5 is a great achievement. It was a difficult race, if felt long, and I had to battle with the car and other things but I profited a lot from people dropping out in front of us. I am happy."
-
1552:
Pastor Maldonado is off down the paddock towards the stewards office to discuss his incident with Lewis Hamilton. Oh to be a fly on the wall in that meeting...
-
Force India's Paul Di Resta, who finished seventh: "After 10 laps, it looked like a one stop might work but, if you're trying to do one stop less than anybody else, it's over when the safety car comes out. If we knew the car was coming out, we might have taken a stop then."
-
Britain's Jenson Button, who finished eighth: "Twelve years of experience doesn't help you this year. I tried moves here and there and nothing worked out, but the car felt reasonably good in the race. The strategy was fine, but we didn't have any luck."

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton refused to bite in his interview with BBC F1 pit lane reporter Lee McKenzie saying: "Big congratulations to Fernando. It was a tough day for us, but that's life. You have to deal with it. We were a long way off winning today." The McLaren driver was flanked by two press officers as he negotiated the paddock after the race and has clearly made the decision not to stoke the flames.
-
BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan"I believe the poor pit stop cost Lewis the race because he would have been clear of Fernando Alonso, and Pastor Maldonado would have not got anywhere near him to knock him out of the race."
-
Force India on Twitter: "Awesome result today. P5 for Nico Hulkenberg and P7 for Paul Di Resta, earning 16 precious points. A bit lucky at times but great effort."
-
1535:
David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan are discussing the Pastor Maldonado and Lewis Hamilton incident with DC pointing out that Maldonado crossed the white line and went off the race track before coming back on track and making contact with Hamilton. If you missed the incident, you can watch it again on this website.
-
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg, who finished sixth: "It felt like I was going to finish 15th at one point, so I am pleased with sixth. It was a difficult race and it was a great call for strategy at the end. It gave me many positions. Tyre temperature and degradation was key today, it was such a challenge to get it right."

-
Mercedes boss Ross Brawn: "Finishing a race and scoring some points was a good step [for Michael]. He's very self-motivated. I've never known that he needs motivation from the outside. We've got some new things for Silverstone. We can't forget how quick Sebastian Vettel looked today, so we've still got a lot to do."
-
Mark Webber, who finished fourth, and is now second in the championship said: "It was another crazy day. It's difficult to read what will happen on a Sunday at the moment. We're all winging it in terms of strategy. Maybe if I had started at the front, I might not have had the clean run I had from the back. In the end, I got a lot of points so I am happy and it's a good result for the team."

-
Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn has confirmed that he informed Michael Schumacher that he couldn't use his DRS while the yellow flags were out. Brawn also personally double-checked the data and Schumacher stopped using is 30m before the yellow flag zone so he's confident there won't be a penalty.

-
1522:
Red Bull Christian Horner confirms that it was an alternator issue on Sebastian Vettel's car similar to that on Romain Grosjean's Lotus so he says they need to work with Renault to find out what went wrong. Horner said: "Sometimes motor racing can be cruel and for Seb today, it didn't go his way."
-
Michael Schumacher, who finished third to take his first podium since returning to the sport in 2010, said: "I didn't think about a podium at all. I asked my guys at the end of the race where I finished and when they told me third, I couldn't believe it. You lose count of where you are, it was busy at the end of the race."
-
Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen, who finished second: "I think everybody had old tyres by the end, but I had enough tyres to get past Hamilton - but I didn't have the speed today to challenge for the win. I made a good start but I was blocked by Maldonado so I was a bit behind, but made a good recovery from that position had some hard fighting and overtaking. But second place was not what we wanted."
-
European Grand Prix winner Fernando Alonso: "I cannot put into words the special feeling of winning your home grand prix. It is unique and special. I had the opportunity in Barcelona in 2006 and did the same here in Valencia. The stands were full of colour and Spanish flags and, after the footballers won at Euro 2012, I am feeling very proud to be Spanish at the moment. This is possibly the best victory I have ever had."
-
1516:
The top three have completed their press conference duties, here's what they had to say...
-
Ferrari technical director Pat Fry: "We had a bit of a tough start to the season, but we're developing the car at a greater rate than everyone else. Q2 was so tight yesterday and if anything, we were over confident. As it turned out, having two new sets of tyres was a big help to get through the traffic."
-
BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan"Romain Grosjean was one of the big stars of today. He showed composure and was unlucky to suffer car problems."
-
1512:
That's all from the boys on BBC One, but we're far from finished. Flick over to the Red Button or watch in the module above for all the reaction...
-
1510:
Jake reports that there's a rumour Michael Schumacher may have his third place taken away from him for using his DRS during yellow flag conditions. That would be cruel.
-
1507:
It was a mighty drive from Kimi Raikkonen, too. The Finn looked after his tyres in the early part of the race and though it took some time for him to pass Lewis Hamilton, he never gave up and made it happen. He's now sixth in the standings, 38 points behind Alonso and still very much in the game.

The Spaniard was on it from the start, putting all sorts of passes, at all sorts of corners as he battled through the field from 11th on the grid. Alonso wasn't given this race, after Sebastian Vettel retired, he fought tooth and nail for it.
-
Pastor Maldonado, who collided with Lewis Hamilton before finishing 10th: "He tried to put me off of the track and he didn't give me any room. I jumped over the kerb and couldn't avoid the accident. I don't know why he was driving like that. He tried a very aggressive movement on me."
-
1504:
Fernando Alonso is the first double winner of 2012 and our new championship leader. He leads on 111 points, 10 points clear of Mark Webber with Lewis Hamilton down in third on 88 points.
-
1503:
So here's how they finished: Alonso, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Webber, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Di Resta, Button, Perez and an ailing Maldonado.
-
BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan"Well done to Valencia, what they served up today was enthralling. The winner came from 11th on the grid, on a circuit which they say you cannot pass on."

1502:
At the fifth time of asking, Valencia's street circuit has delivered the goods. Super scenes.

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali: "It was an unbelievable race and, for me, it is important that we kept the pace. Game on people, we have a safety car. There goes Sebastian Vettel's 20 second lead. It looks like the organisers want to clean the track up with debris from Vergne's Toro Rosso all over the place. There's plenty of activity in the pit-lane as drivers try to capitalise on the situation.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"There was no need for Jean-Eric Vergne to make that move to the right. I'm not sure what he was thinking at that point. At 200mph, it's not necessary to be weaving around."
-
LAP 28
Jean-Eric Vergne puts a move on Heikki Kovalainen but weaves into the Caterham. That gives him a right rear puncture, and Kovalainen has a front left puncture. That's bad luck for the Finn. Could the Frenchman get a penalty for that?
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Force India have shown genuine pace all weekend, on short and long runs. They are looking one of the faster cars in Valencia."
-
LAP 27
Paul di Resta is told by his team that he's the only driver doing a one-stop strategy and they "think" they can make it work. The Force India driver is down in 14th, 65 seconds behind the leader.

LAP 26
Fernando Alonso is taking handfuls of time out of Lewis Hamilton in the battle for third place. It won't be long before the Ferrari driver is all over the back of the McLaren. Romain Grosjean clocks the fastest lap and takes three tenths out of leader Sebastian Vettel.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"It's looking a tall order for Paul Di Resta to win this race, unless he can get to the end of the race on these tyres. I don't think that is possible though."
-
LAP 25
Sebastian Vettel is controlling the race at the front and maintaining his 20-second lead over Romain Grosjean. Both men are lapping in the high-1m44s, while Lewis Hamilton is in the high 1m45s and falling back.
-
RACE UPDATE
Vettel leads by 21 seconds. Grosjean overtakes Hamilton for second place. Alonso up to fourth with a series of overtakes. Senna saves a huge spin after high-speed contact with Sauber's Kobayashi. 1 Vettel 2 Grosjean 3 Hamilton 4 Alonso 5 Raikkonen 6 Maldonado 7 Massa 8 Hulkenberg 9 Button 10 Perez.

LAP 25
Bruno Senna has been given a drive-through penalty for his role in the incident with Kamui Kobayashi.

Kimi Raikkonen uses DRS to good effect as he passes the struggling Paul di Resta in the Force India. The Scot has been told by his team that he just needs to hold on for a couple more laps to make his one-stop strategy work.
-
LAP 22
Sebastian Vettel is having a lovely afternoon in Valencia. The German is just cruising around at the front, 19.9 seconds ahead of Romain Grosjean with Lewis Hamilton four seconds further back. Paul di Resta is struggling on those older tyres and is easy-pickings for Fernando Alonso who takes fourth.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Senna lost control of his car because he got a puncture on the right, rear wheel of the car. This has cost him so much this afternoon. He struggled in qualifying and it has got even more tricky for him now."
-
LAP 20
There's contact between Kamui Kobayashi and Bruno Senna. The Sauber driver tries a move up the inside of Senna, but there's no space. Senna doesn't see him, goes to take the racing line and they make contact. Kobayashi needs a new front wing, but Senna does well to avoid hitting the wall with an amazing save of the car, as he slides down the track facing the wall at 180 degrees. He then crawls back to the pits with a rear puncture.
-
LAP 19
Michael Schumacher is really backing up the field and his lack of pace forces him into the pits for a fresh set of boots.

-
BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson"Some of the pit stops are earlier than I expected. I think it was a good strategy for Red Bull because Vettel was losing a second on some of his best laps early on."
-
LAP 18
Fernando Alonso puts a great move on Mark Webber around the outside of Turn Two. Later in the lap, he then passes Bruno Senna around the outside at Turn 12. Next up is Michael Schumacher. The Spaniard is absolutely flying.
-
LAP 17
Michael Schumacher has a train of cars behind him. The Mercedes driver has found himself in sixth place as others have stopped. He's defending seventh from Bruno Senna with Fernando Alonso hunting Mark Webber down further behind.
-
BBC F1 commentator Ben Edwards"Both Grosjean and Vettel will have to stop at some point once again, to pick up their hard tyres."
-
LAP 16
Our leader has pitted and it's a clean stop for Sebastian Vettel. It's soft tyres for the German and he rejoins the track in clear air. Lotus have reacted and pitted Romain Grosjean on the same lap. He rejoins, 21 seconds behind the German. Time to put the hammer down sir.

-
LAP 15
Fernando Alonso makes short work of Pastor Maldonado for third place as Lewis Hamilton has pitted for new boots. Kamui Kobayashi pits, too. Sebastian Vettel still leads from Romain Grosjean.
-
LAP 14
Good move by Felipe Massa and Jean-Eric Vergne in to the hairpin for 15th. Meanwhile, we've just seen a replay of Raikkonen's move on Maldonado and it appears a straw hat has been blown onto the track and shreded to pieces as they both fly over it. I hope whoever lost that hat has some suncream to compensate.
-
LAP 13
Wow, Kimi Raikkonen sticks his Lotus on the outside of Pastor Maldonado at Turn 13 and refuses to lift. The Lotus hugs the corner and is in the perfect place for Turn 14 to take the position. Maldonado has no choice but to yield. Brave stuff from the Finn, but he needed to pass the Williams soon if he wants to be on the podium.
-
RACE UPDATE
Vettel leads by 11secs. Romain Grosjean overtakes Hamilton. 1 Vettel 2 Grosjean 3 Hamilton 4 Kobayashi 5 Maldonado 6 Raikkonen 7 Alonso 8 Hulkenberg 9 Di Resta 10 Rosberg

LAP 13
Felipe Massa pits, too and he rejoins in 16th, while Perez pops out in 20th, one spot behind Jenson Button. Kimi Raikkonen is desperately trying to find a way by Pastor Maldonado, but the Williams driver is having none of it. Fernando Alonso has better luck, though, and passes Nico Hulkenberg for seventh place. He is immediately told by his team is told to "push".

The gap is now 9.7 seconds as Vettel clocks another mid-1:45. He's the only man in that bracket at the moment. Mark Webber hasn't made any progress in recent laps and is still 17th.
-
BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard"Vettel can now pit and get out in front of 11th-placed Rosberg, providing it is a clean stop."
-
LAP EIGHT
Sebastian Vettel's lead is now 8.5 seconds, but behind him, just six seconds cover second through to eight. It's very, very close. Paul di Resta holds off an attack from Felipe Massa once more at the hairpin and is then told that he's going a good job and they can stick to Plan A.
-
LAP SEVEN
Felipe Massa has a stab around the outside of Paul di Resta at the hairpin in the battle for ninth, but the Force India defends robustly and it's as you were. Lewis Hamilton is told he is doing a good job by his team, which suggests he has been told to look after his tyres and maybe try a one-stopper. If that's not the case, it's rather worrying that Sebastian Vettel is disappearing into the distance.

Fernando Alonso made a solid start, leaping up into eighth, one place ahead of the Force India of Paul di Resta. The Spaniard is now all over the back of Nico Hulkenberg. Jenson Button is having a miserable time down in 13th, stuck behind Michael Schumacher who is on the harder compound tyre.
-
LAP TWO
Romain Grosjean is all over the back of Lewis Hamilton, forcing the McLaren driver to go defensive. Sebastian Vettel meanwhile is steaming off into the distance. Oh dear. The orange juice must be working because Kamui Kobayashi has climbed up to fourth in his Sauber and keeping up with the Lotus in front. Stunning stuff.

BBC F1 commentator Ben Edwards"It's a good start from Fernando Alonso, he is trying to use all his experience to get past the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg."
-
LAP ONE
Romain Grosjean makes a blistering start, holding off his Lotus team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and then launching an attack on the Williams of Pastor Maldonado. Early on, Vettel is far more aggressive on the kerbs, pulling out a lead of three car lengths in the first half of the lap. But the McLaren driver fights back to reduce the gap to one car length before locking his tyres heavily and losing a bunch of time. No such mistake from the German and he powers across the line to secure the 33rd pole position of his career.

BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson"Perhaps the most disappointed man after qualifying was Force India's Paul di Resta. Third quickest in second qualifying, the Scot had realistic hopes of qualifying on the first two rows in a car that had been transformed in competitiveness, but a mistake under braking at the very end of his run in final qualifying left him down in 10th. 'A lap half a second slower than your best in Q3,' he said ruefully. 'I'll spend a lot of time analysing that.'"
-
McLaren driver Jenson Button: "I need a positive attitude and I have that today. I watched some replays from last year and I did some overtaking. There are no issues with the car and if we have the right strategy and look after our tyres, I think we can have a positive race today."
-
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson"I'm afraid the teams' strategy brains are not expecting a particularly interesting race. The engineers are predicting an easy win for Vettel, not least because the Friday race-simulation runs suggest Hamilton will hold up Pastor Maldonado's Williams and the Lotuses. A lot depends on whether Hamilton and McLaren have improved their race pace following the set-up changes they made ahead of qualifying. More on strategy in a moment."

BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson"As overtaking is nigh-on impossible in Valencia, anyone trying to pass will have to aim to undercut their rivals at the pit stops. But that's not easy as the person in front will be able to stop sooner, because the timing of the first stop will be defined by when the cars can stop and clear the lower midfield runners such as the Toro Rossos and Heikki Kovalainen's Caterham. The 'soft' is about half a second faster than the 'medium'. Although the medium degrades less, it only becomes quicker after about 30-odd laps, although different teams view it differently - some say the soft is the best race tyre, some the medium. It is expected to be a two-stop race with some doing three stops and some possibly trying to eke it out to a one. Expect the first stops around lap 12 (three-stop) to 14 (two-stop) to 20 (one stop)."

BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson"The Lotus cars of Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen were comfortably the fastest in Friday's race simulation runs and although they were held in cooler conditions than there are in Valencia for the race, heat has been Lotus's friend so far this season. Hamilton has tipped them as pre-race favourites, but Grosjean is not getting ahead of himself. 'If I started without thinking about the win, it wouldn't be right,' he said. The Williams driver, who starts one place behind Lewis Hamilton, added: "I prefer to be P3 rather than P2 as there's a huge difference in terms of grip. -
BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson"There was no joking down at Ferrari, where Fernando Alonso admitted he was 'very sad' to qualify down in 11th place. There was the suggestion that he might have been able to get into the top 10 shoot-out if he had used two sets of soft tyres in second qualifying, but said fundamentally the car was 'not fast enough'. Alonso said he had been lacking top speed, a continuing problem for Ferrari this season. The weather is usually good, too and this year looks like it will be no different...

1148:
While the location is perfect, the track layout has produced very little excitement in the four races it has hosted. This year, though, is different. This year, we've had seven different winners in seven races and with Lotus's impressive race pace and love for hot conditions - which are expected today - the chances of different winner number eight aren't as unlikely as one would think.

BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson"It's a glorious day in Valencia, with blue skies and sunshine, and the temperature is expected to reach about 30C for the race. On any other circuit, the race would be set up intriguingly. Two title contenders are at the front - Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton - with three fast cars behind them in the form of Pastor Maldonado's Williams and the two Lotuses. Meanwhile, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is 11th and Red Bull's Mark Webber 19th after problems of one kind or another. The history of this race suggests they are in for long afternoons on a track where overtaking is virtually impossible. Can 2012's unpredictability extend to Valencia actually producing an interesting race for once?"

1145:
Welcome, one and all, to the European Grand Prix in the picturesque Spanish city of Valencia, the birthplace of the nation's signature dish paella and home to the best orange juice in the world - according to Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi.
-
1143:
The double world champion pulled out of the garage, with just a few minutes remaining and produced a lap with 100% commitment and precision. He hit every apex with precision, judged each entry to perfection and accelerated out of each corner masterfully. The result was a 33rd career pole position which draws him level with legends Jim Clark and Alain Prost in the all-time stakes. Only Michael Schumacher (68) and Ayrton Senna (65) are ahead of him.

1140:
You reach Q3, the final part of qualifying, having just scraped through after being forced onto the back foot by running again and using up an extra set of soft tyres. You sit in your garage knowing you have just one shot at pole as the clock ticks by in the 10-minute shoot-out. The pressure of the world is on your shoulders as you know you have a car which is capable of securing pole position after a raft of updates. Most would crack under the pressure. Most would make a mistake. However most aren't Sebastian Vettel, a double world champion...
